  • And before the Columbine shootings. A lot has changed since the 1990s.

  • Wow! No one there!

  • Wow. It's hard to think that WMATA used to run 2 and 4 car trains. Now they run 6 and 8 car trains. Although for the past few days I've only seen 6 car trains. I wonder why. Does anyone else know? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Lol, we just got back from Washington the other day. I love the nice computer lady that tells you to get out of the way haha!

  • @PMSKibasaurus It's funny because people still don't listen to her.

  • @GreasemonkeyCGI Lol I now right? When we were there, people were doing exactly what she say to do/not to do, but I suppose its because they're used to it. Lol

  • @GreasemonkeyCGI Lol I now right? When we were there, people were doing exactly what she say to do/not to do, but I suppose its because they're used to it. Lol

  • i loved the old train (closing door)sound(2003). Ding Dong. Now it is 4 beeps. ohh great

  • Sounds like this door chime was recorded in the mid 80's.

  • is this a 4000 or 3000

  • @roselmmortal that's the air propulsion

  • Great

  • The late 90's door chime was the best is had a lower "Ding Dong" than this one and was almost identical to NYC's IND train "Ding Dong" This older Higher pitched "ding dong" aint bad but today's is so annoying it's like gung gung gung

  • The only thing good about DC is the subway and the zoo.

  • Huh. I actually thought the trains switched onto different lines, due to each train being the same, and I saw some LEDs on the indicator outside with different colors. The one that was lit up corresponded to the line I was talking.

  • That's the year I was born in and I currently live in Washington D.C! :)

  • The old WMATA when the Flxibles romed the streets and the Bredas and Rohrs ruled the rails

  • wow, that's a short train... I don't think they even run 4 car trains anymore

  • @tomf688 they don't, but they used to all the time back then. The last time I saw a 4 car train was 2006.

  • That electric razor/buzzing sound the Breda cars make are absolutely gorgeous to listen to (especially from the inside as it rolls along....really soothing after a long day of work !). A beautiful sounding train from braking to take off !!

  • Wow, the Metro looks exactly the same when i was there(2010)!

  • that looks like Atlanta's Marta train. I love trains, I love my car but trains are a good break from driving that doesn't involve the bus LOL

  • i'm used to the newer ones that sound kinda like "EEEEEEEEE-aaaaaaaaaa" and "EEEEEEEWWWwwwwwAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH"(see jdgator's WMATA vids), but this sounds a lot cooler. damn, i miss the '90s....

i love trying to imitate the sounds in words.

  • I took a vacation in Washington a few days ago! What happens to the trains at the end of each line?

  • @Celiecinema1 At the last station of every line there is a place where the train can turn around and go in the opposite direction

  • That train sounds beautiful, exhilerating. It sounds alot more futuristic than the new train honestly. The new ones are nice though, but the classic remains a favorite...

  • i was like 4 years old nd i remember goin 2 tha metro alot around these years

  • hmm i like this chime better than the one that plays now its not as annoying

  • @CapitanBluebeard Well, now they practically lecture you, as the new chime message is very wordy. I think redoing the chime in 2006 was probably a good idea, because the old chime had become somewhat stale, but they should have recorded one similar to the older Sandy Carroll chimes and just freshened it up that way. I know of no other system that lectures like WMATA does.

  • the Metropolitan Washington has the same elective unit trains from New York, anointing difference is that in Washington, metropolitno there is not so abandoned station that neither New York

  • Did I just see a little boy with a skirt get off the train

  • I like this breda train allot. i think thats my favorit metro car.

  • Haha Damn I was at that stop yesterday :D

  • only a four car train lol

  • oh who doesnt miss the propusion sounds old Bredas used to make

  • i was born in 1995

  • Well thats your fault...

  • Before 911. The 90's were awesome.

  • @Borat2borat amen

  • haha basicly the same as now but i do not here "ding don the doors are closing BEEP BEEP BEEP" any more

  • almost the same or the same as volcano

  • Hey Mark is there a conductor on that train?

  • yes

  • i rode that 3 weeks ago

  • Occasionly, I've ridden a train with the old voice chime.

1996 was before the 5000 series

  • @davinp Could you mind telling me where the original unrehabbed bredas are most common- I would really like to ride one again before the get rahbbed in 2014.

  • @saveus444 I don't know exactly where they are used most. I know that they are the 4000 series, which weren't rehab when they did the 2000/3000 series. They only have about 100 of the 4000 series, so I don't see them very often

  • @davinp 4000-Series are mostly on the Red Line, but they very rarely run in all-4000-Series consists anymore due to the mandate to sandwich all 1000-Series cars between other car series (which I think is a waste of time and effort).

  • @schuminweb I agree. I don't like the mixing of rail cars. The led signs in the cars don't well and neither the speakers when they are mixed. I don't think 5000 or 6000 series cars should be connected to 1000 series. Metro also wasted time & money moving the numbers on the cars from under the windows to the top.

  • @davinp I don't mind that Metro added the numbers to the top of the car. It standardizes the numbering (most 1000-Series cars only had numbers at the cab end), makes them easier to read, and makes individual cars easier to identify in photos. What I don't agree with is Metro's removing the old numbers. That seems unnecessary, since the cars aren't having their numbers changed, it leaves weird ghosting on the carbodies, and it was done sloppily in many cases.

  • @saveus444 They're most common on the red line near the middle of trains...they aren't allowed to be on the ends after the accident back in 2009--apparently the frames are too flimsy and break apart in a collision.

  • I miss those buzzing trains they don't ave them any more the old ding dong of the trains reminds me of good times but the best door closing sound was the one thay had from about 1998 til about 2006 which said "doors closing" Ding dong I can't satnd the new door closing "when boarding please move to the center of the car" and then "stand back doors closing"

  • Wow Not much ever changes on the metro! I really miss those big stations and buzzing trains

  • I was born 1987,so I was just nine when this was filmed.Great video!

  • I rode this train with my brother just last year Spring break 2008.We were in D.C for two days.Remember the automated voice saying"Step back, door is closing".Clean system also.Took us past the Pentagon to Reagan Airport.

  • i miss that sound very few trains in the lineup make that sound now

  • Man i luv the buzz on these trains.

  • There's an even better buzz. search jubilee line train.

  • That one is nice too but i have to stick with the on in my home town

  • I rode the Metro Brookland line to CUA. It was always super clean, Safe and never stopped for long periods.

Miss DC very much!! Hope to one day get back there.

  • wow it still looks the same

  • Wow, everything still looks the same today! I really miss DC.

  • i grew up riding DC Metrorail from about 1994 to when i left DC in early 2007

my all-time favorite set of trains is the classic Rohr 1000-series

i used to LOVE the sound of hearing those trains come in the station ;)

    ah good times

  • What is that C# buzz that comes from all Metro trains as they coast to a stop? (Starts getting loud at about :07)

  • The buzzing sound I believe is the dynamic braking. The electrical current is reversed to the motors on the car so the motors are generating power, that power is pushed to resistors, or back to the 3rd rail. This caused the train to slow down. The air brakes don't engage until near the end of the stopping sequence (except emergency when they apply immediately).

  • Interesting...I could tell it had SOMETHING to do with electricity, since I'd assume a system like that would be running on a 225 V current (which hums at C#). Thanks for explaining why it suddenly becomes so audible!

  • @subwaymark Actually, I believe that's the DC-chopper motors that the Breda 3000-Series used prior to rehab. That chopper sound is always going, even at full speed, but during a station stop, you just don't really hear it well until you're pretty close to the train.

  • @subwaymark Thats Regenerative Breaking. In Toronto, Canada We have older trains that give a ''buzzing'' sound when breaking. dynamic braking is when the eletric current is made into heat into the resistor pack to bring the train to a halt.

  • @subwaymark That buzzing sound you'll find on most of the older Breda cars.

  • You read my mind lol, I was going to ask that question myself. Anyway I hope everyone here had an awesome christmas!!!!!

  • i was 6, those were the days

  • hahah i was riding this metro back in 96 =)

  • i was only 1 years old when he filmed this =)

  • I was also 1 years old when this was filmed

  • Ahh, the good ol' days...

  • Dc metro I love you

  • Does anyone know what that cracking sound bredas always make are? Even the rehabed ones make them

  • That sound is from airbrakes, I believe. All the cars make that sound except for the Rohrs.

  • what station is that

  • I think it is Union Station on the Red Line

  • yes its definetly union station

  • Best station there is lol

  • The new voice and chimes are awful for the metro. Back when I was little I always remember the "doors closing...bung...buung..." sound, and the loud neon-type sound when the train leaves and enters a station. It sounded so futuristic!

  • yeah man i loved hearing that.......thats

why i got the wmata bve game

  • Neon type?!?!?Can you please describe what you mean by that?

  • I mean the "NEEEEEEEEEE" sound when the train is almost at a complete stop. You can hear it in this video.

  • 1996, when DC Metro trains were actually efficient and even the chimes were more pleasant.

  • The Metro is the best system I've ever been on. It's light years better than the NY subway.

  • @leonardwilson85 it is, i always catch it at rockville and branch ave.

  • @leonardwilson85 that's because New York City is bigger, busier, and the subway is older :P

  • I loved the tones (mid 70s) and the chimes (mid 80s).

  • Very different experience now. Good luck taking the red line ANYWHERE down town. Your train is either late, full, or has idiots that crowd the doors. I gave up after three months. It is 20min faster to drive now, which is sad.

  • o my god i have never been in union station when it was completely empty, or any station for that matter. When did the "doors closing" voice come on?

  • No voice. Back in those days, the only sound was a (different) two-tone chime. Realize this movie is 12 years old - predating both the present chimes, as well as the "doors closing" voice before it.

  • Back when Bredas with chopper controlled DC motors dominated metro. Ah the mid 90's

  • and that was the good ole days.. now its.. single tracking... stuck in tunnels... late late late..and the fares just went up...but one can get around just takes longer...

  • that's exactly how it is in Atlanta.

  • Hey at least the Metro runs, here our SEPTA strikes every year and is filthier then a third world sewer. But hey, its Always sunny in Philadelphia :-P

  • You should see Atlanta, good god.

  • theres no way Atlanta can be worse then Philly! The sewer like conditions are not an exaggeration :-P

  • Every other block in Atlanta has bums asking " Kan I hav som changez?!" and the stations are disgusting, and yes they are sewers as much as New York, thats bad.

  • Oh wow, that chime is old school. That's before they had the female voice added on to that.

  • Yeah, that's back in the days when the doors just opened - no announcement - and the close was just a chime. Definitely before the "doors closing" voice, and well before the present lecture we receive nowadays.

  • I also remember that high-pitched two-tone chime by itself on the Breda's. My first ride on WMATA was in 1986 (ten years earlier) but things were almost exactly the same in 1986-87 as it was 10 years later when this movie was taken

  • Heh... that's exactly how I remember the Metro from when I commuted to work this morning. Only I didn't roll through Union Station... ;)

  • That's exactly how I remember the Metro from when I lived there in 96.
