  • singing this song for solo and ensemble, LOVE it.

  • Loves it

  • @SandrineSoprano So glad you added this comment! Best, Ted

  • Fantasticos videos!. Gracias

  • This must be the version written for that specific singer

  • i wish she'd do a piece of musical theatre, one of the legit roles. shes such a brilliant actress and showman..and it wouldnt be so demanding on the voice

    such a delight

  • I LOVE HER!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wonderful, moving, superb, Here she, and several others, sing an additional phrase before the last "habe Dank" I've sung the song a thousand time myself and have never come across it. She does NOT do it in the version she does with piano only (sempre Solti). Can anyone enklighten me?

  • @cantorga ~I am also curious. I trust Solti implicitly with Strauss, so there must be *something* he had sketched out or discussed. I sing a lot of Strauss, and am reading his letters. I hope I find something. Also, I work with Daniel Lockert, and he seems to know about these things.

  • @cantora~ Listen to Christine Brewer's link. She does the same thing in v.3, and in v.2 interpolates the measure "...hoch, den Ama (thysten Becher)." She's on my FB, so I;m going to get to the bottom of this! ;-)

  • Great video, fantastic!!!! Thank you for sharing.

  • Gorgeous! Many thanks. Kiri gives this the movement it begs for! The fortissimos are just perfect , except, alas, for the long extended one at the end, just a fraction of a tone flat. Who cares? Brava!

  • She always has a lovely quality of voice.

  • A most enjoyable performance by a great singer!

  • @CanadaPisces

Thank you, Amethyst888 for psting and to you, James.

  • She may not understand the true meaning of the german text but what a thrilling voice.

Try listening to her early naive and thrilling recording of the four last songs and then comparing the the magnificent later recordings with Solti which you can find the dvd of quite readily. Quite beautiful to see the devotion, dedication and love of these two in her quest to get it right.

  • Actually they used to say that Pavarotti could not read music either!

If you are right, I am seriously thinking of suggesting immediate prohibition of the teaching of music reading to all conservatories of the world who train opera singers!

  • Norman shows more musicianship because Kanawa doesn't know how to read music, she has to learn everything by ear.

  • I honestly think Jessye Norman shows more musicianship.

    but she's phenomenal!

  • @sexckandra interesting. I find that Norman's voice is good for cutting through Strauss's normally large orchestrations (not this piece in particular), I feel like a lyric voice like kiri's tends to contour better to his music. His phrases are so long and complicated, Kiri's voice seems to help to make sense of it all. However for Wagner, give me Jessye any day!

  • @sexckandra That is, when she is not singing flat!!!

  • Ah the great conductor Sir Solti how lucky we where he survived the WW11 (being Jewish). Wonderful!!! Kind and warm regards,

  • Isn't she lovely : )

  • She jumps the beat on the high A-natural on "Heilig". I like the optional high passage that she puts in near the end. The voice is beautiful and the conducting inspired. Bravi.

  • theres no sound!

  • I listened to Renee Fleming sing this live. It was origionally composed to be sung with a piano, but it sounds wonderful sung by Kiri Te Kanawa with the orchestra. Dont you agree?

  • I prefer Renee...

  • @strauss12345 It is. I love the fact that Strauss orchestrated all of his lieder in the last years of his life.

  • This is definitely a different orchestration than the usual. I'm less fond of this one.

    Brava Kiri!

  • Good Video, but In all honesty I don't like her voice in this piece, she seems so light for it almost. But i like this song a little faster, but thanks for the post!

  • i dont like the little part she adds at the end

  • What a present.

I used to have this concert on a video tape that I destroyed from playing to often...

Thank you Amethyst... Does your name have anything to do with the colour of her dress!? ;-))

By the way, I cannot decide if I like the orchestral or the piano version more...

  • what a woman!

  • Habe Dank!!!
