I used to think Mulroney was the worst thing to happen to this country... but now, after the rise of the extreme right-wing "Reform" like Preston Manning and, of course, Harper, they actually make Mulroney look like a left-wing extremist (well, not really, but you get my point... Mulroney was horrible enough,,, I never imagined that I'd actually be saying smthg good abt Mulroney..)
@ammarios And on that note, MAN do I miss Chretien ... I'm not a Liberal voter (I'm a staunch NDP supporter), but even I can admit that Trudeau and Chretien were, so far, the last of the greatest PM's this country has seen) ... My heroes of Canada are: Pierre Trudeau, Jean Chretien, Tommy Douglas, and now, Jack Layton .. let's hope this list will grow in the near future...
So is that where the current advertising style began? Attack ads seem to be all we see nowadays. They make me like the party that puts out the ads less!
Brian Mulroney did not even like Canada and kept stealing money and shiuld have gone to jail for it. He liked the US way more and tried to make Canada more like the US.
A couple of things come to mind: one that this election killed the PCs and the true "Tory" party, leading to redneck Reformes like Harper. That is sad. Secondly, wow have things changed since 1993! Like the computer being used by the political analyst. And Barometer on Q107 was an excellent show. Too bad they got rid of it. The Mighty Q hasn't been the same since.
This is why I love Canada, Canadians saw this and didn't let the Tory's get away with it..I think they won something like 2 seats that election. If this were another country (hint hint) these attack ads would have worked.
History always repeats itself. The PCs attacked Chretien's face, the Liberals attacked the faith of Manning, Day and Harper. They're all equal as far as I'm concerned. Nobody's dealing with the issues. People need to be engaged emotionally. Appealing to their intellect gets you a minority movement voting libertarian. People want to be inspired. Chretien for a little while did that. And he had our sympathy. The policies never really matter. The country is run by special interests anyway.
What a different time. You'd never see a Conservative MP today come out and criticize the attacks ads of their own party. They are too scared. Even if those ads include a bird crapping on the Leader of the Opposition or question another leader's patriotism and commitment to Canada.
I was never that in love with the liberals or all the ridiculous spending with zero efficiency but that one sentence really bought me over. The ads made me angry and he really delivered here:
"They tried to make fun of the way that I look.... GOD gave me a physical defect. and I've accepted that since I was a kid."
You know the Conservatives are desperate when they have to use the physical appearance of their competitor in their fight...... blah blah blah, f*king politics!
@conrailgrille Ads like this happens in politics - I have seen worse. And if you actually watch the ad they were not "attacking his face" - but it was all a matter of interpretation
Chretien can't fool me with his cornball outrage. You can tell by his response to the ad that he was just loving the attention - he had probably been practicing in front of the mirror for years for just that moment when someone made fun of his face
Tasteless and deceitful campaigning, aggressive and jingoistic foreign policies, constant disregard for democratic conventions with underhanded measures like proroguing parliament......the Conservatives are the same now as they've ever been. Unfortunately the Liberals haven't had anything resembling effective leadership in years and I fear Michael Ignatieff doesn't have the backbone to stand firm against that thug Harper and his strong-arm tactics.
Everything is reperable long term lol maybe my use of word was too strong, but you get what I mean. It caused a lot of damage to their image by attacking someone based on physical defects. Not just as a politician but as a human, that's a real low level to stoop down to.
This ad was a HORRIBLE mistake, they withdrew the ad within a matter of days and it caused irreperable damage. The man's paralyzed... they must have taken a stupid pill to make this ad haha
John Tory at 2:18, defending using an ad making fun of Chrétien's face. I am so happy he couldn't get a seat in the Ontario Legislature. Every voting Torontonian should see this clip before they choose their next mayor.
Yes, and the Liberals never do as evidenced by their much more recent "Soldiers with guns in the street" ad.....all sanctioned by current Liberal shadow cabinet members and the wonderful and talented Stephan Dion
John Tory: Woah I am surprised he was behind this. Maybe I shouldn't be...maybe I have to reconsider his integrity. Despite his stance on faith base funding for education...
You guys have far, far worse ads in America. We get American tv in Canada, and your political ads are unreal. Almost every one of them is a personal attack.
Our country did not vote for Harper, only a MINORITY did, and that is a very important fact for anyone who thinks a coalition would be un-democratic. The fact that the majority of Canadian voters did NOT vote for Harper, and he is still the PM, now that is un-democratic.
When this subversive prorogue is finished, so will Harper be. This is not a conservative country, we just need to unite our 3 liberal parties(Lib, NDP, GRN) into one party, and then Canada will show it's true colors (cont.)
the liberals ndp and green are 3 very diffrent parties. the liberals are centerists. where the ndp are to the centre left and greens are more like conservatives then anything else. to unite them would create political chaos they would all be out to implement there own political ideology wich would get us no where. and u cant really call it uniting the left because only 1 of theese parties the ndp is slightly on the left. to unite theese three parties would be a diasaster.
Well , actually Campbell didn't even see the ads before they aired . It was John Tory and Allan Gregg who made the decision to air the commercials . Just saying . I'm a conservative .

The reofrm party never should have merged with the PC party.
They should have thought about the distant future, rather than the immidiate future.
Eventually, the PC party would have died and the Reform party would have taken over the right wing completely.
Instead, we have a watered down Conservative party now (which I support because they are better than the alternatives).
Preston Manning is the greatest Prime Minister that we never had.
