The Foot Guards, being the elite of the British Army, are constantly being deployed in places such as Afghanistan and Iraq.
So I would not say they are for show or attracting tourist. It is a tradition that has been carried on the past 200 years and will continue to do so regardless of visitors or tourists.
The fact that they attract tourists is purely incidental.
