  • sponsors are needed.... Mark is telling us that you can calibrate your light meter via Sekonic Data Transfer! Sounds marvellous. But he forget to tell that the Sekonic driver is not usable with Apple's Snow Leopard. So you can buy a pricy light meter and a VERY PRICE Sekonic Greycard that very restricting for Apple users. I asked the question a few days ago via Chat in the chatroom at CreativeLive but of course no answer. I understand sponsors are needed....

  • @Hubert545Irma Actually you CAN use the calibration tools on a Mac (with snow leopard). Check out Sekonic for latest updates.

  • I think it's valid information but what happened to learning Stops and training oneself to see light. I understand sponsors are needed but I'd love to see actual teaching and not so much product plug advertising. I did like the hand free metering mode but everything else seemed more like a complex way of keeping track of 2 to 3 lights when that could be done through simple mathematics.

Not to sound like a jerk but the reflective meters in most DSL's with spot metering are right on.

  • i watched all 28 episods untill now.. i guess its OK

  • Thanks Mark this was a very good tutorial.....

    gretings form the Netherlands

  • I've tried 3 times to buy items from Adorama, but each time they were out of stock.

  • can you meter the light color temp

  • can you please explain more ...step by step about zone system

  • so the Sekonic 758 incident metering is leading you to underexpose at f8. isn't the whole idea of using a incident light meter for correct exposure?

  • so the Sekonic 758 incident metering is leading you to underexpose at f8.

  • Very informative Mark. Thank you

  • please could you expalin more about zone 5 and how to calibrate camera and lens and put into light meters

  • Very good

  • A great video!

  • I used my L 358 today shooting some portraits and it nailed it everytime. So sweet! It take the guess work out if it all! Love it.

  • I really love all of you tutorials, they have all been very helpful. Do you have a studio in phx? I noticed that a lot of your videos are filmed at Encanto park. Thanks, Nikki

  • you should write a book on fundamentals of digital photography (:

  • digital pyke?

  • Hi Mark, why don't you explain the small number next to the aperture value? I think they're very important too.

  • very nice video again, have been watching them all so far.

I am still struggling with one issue: I can't understand why I see folks telling us to use the incident meter reading as is for the camera setting, without correction for the reflectivity of the subject. Clearly, it's the light hitting the camera from the subject that matters, not the light hitting the subject, in principle, so I would think that the reflectivity of the subject should matter a lot. Is that not true?

  • Exceptional video as always very informative thank you for your wealth of knowledge. A new fan in Phoenix AZ

  • excellent video, i wish i do all this metering setting one day :) thanks for your extremely informative video.

  • Someday I hope to be able to use some of these advanced metering techniques!

This was very informative. I have the Sekonic L-358 so i can't use the trick you outlined here per se. I often take my meter results as a "starting point" and do a few different adjustments in camera just to see the different results.

  • Where can i fan info about the zone sistem on web....i´m from argentina...Great video, you help me a lot !!!y follow all your videos

  • Thanks Mark

  • great mark very helpful thank you

  • nice tips. thanks!

  • How are you able to trigger the strobe with the Sekonic meter was that a built-in feature? I don't seem to see any adaptor.

  • @lg123xyz I can be wrong but if i remember correctly. the model he is using has an internal pocket wizard that can trigger the receivers once they are synced.

  • @deathdemon128 Yes, you're right that model has a built-in PW...sweet. Too bad I have Elinchrom Skyports, afaik there's no light meter that can trigger those without an adaptor or extra transmitter.

  • @lg123xyz Haha. yeah. i'm actually just starting off, but i'm interested. and planning to take some photos at the next COSPLAY events so i've been following these. but it would b really weird if i run on stage to take a meter. Just as weird if i take a whole studio in.

  • @deathdemon128 ok so if I see a guy running on stage to take a meter I'll know who you are :) I've read on a forum that you can trigger Skyports with PW but... if I use PW why would I need a Skyport? If there are any Nikon shooters out there I'd be curious to know how you're dealing with this, thanks.

  • @lg123xyz You can easily trigger the Elinchroms with a PocketWizard. Check out Episode 6 for more details.

  • @snapfactory

Great vid, however way too advanced for me . I was about to buy the sekonc 358 when I saw you talking about it. However am going to buy elinchrom bx-ri which has a skyport transmitter.

If I buy a pocket-wizard module for the sekonic 358, would the skyport be able to trigger it?

  • @snapfactory Yea, but getting two Pocket wizards is about $337(new). I shoot Elinchrom too (2x 500 BXRi & 2X Dlite200), I have the 758DR. I really like how you can control the light output with the Skyports.
