  • Joan brought Bob to the masses, in a way that BD couldnt. Most people i talk to say she was more appealing, her voice draws you in. Bob wrote it she sang it..

  • Hermosa

  • Superbe! J'adore cette chanteuse!

  • I'm not directly replying to AmericanFenian on here because he'll just retort with nonsense. Then again, those defending Dylan are acting equally childish. Behan adapted the melody of Patriot Games from The Merry Month of May. Dylan later wrote this obviously using the same melody. That's what folk singers do. That's folk. The same good songs played throughout the ages. Dylan did an honest parody out of disagreement. Why credit one who he disagrees with?

  • Who sings Bob Dyan songs better than Bob himself?

    You are listening to her!

No other voice is comparable to hers.

  • beauty, brains, captivating voice...what else can a guy ask for?

  • @PrisonPlanetChannel I wish she was gay.... and born in the mid eighties

  • I hate these folk historians, who cares who wrote which song . . . a songs a song and if we can't express our selves what can we do ?

  • Fuck this song Dylan ripped off Dominic Behan and then acted like he didn't. Had he asked I'm sure he would have been allowed to use Dominic Behan's music. The Patriot Game is a far better ballad anyways.

    FUCK bob dylan

  • @AmericanFenian fuck bob dylan? Well then FUCK YOU!

  • @AmericanFenian He accused Bob Dylan of plagiarizing his rebellious Irish song, "The Patriot Game", which Dylan imitated as "With God on Our Side."

Unfortunately, Behan had plagiarized it himself from a traditional Irish melody of the first quarter of the 17th century, known as "The Nightingale"

  • @StevePalRP I'm with ya. This is an honest parody out of a flat-out disagreement over the value of conflict. And, being the nature of folk music, these melodies are played throughout the ages, revolving around the same topics - only played by many people.

Are you sure Patriot Games takes after "The Nightingale?" I've read that it was "The Merry Month of May." Both sound very similar imo.

  • @ViciousCannibal you are a hippy ass forum troll. props.

  • I saw her in Stockholm last year...she is still going strong.

  • Powerful song.

  • I've loved the music of Joan Baez since I was 14. Nothing has changed. Stunning.

  • @Tlax13 I'd hardly say Dylan shamefully stole this song. He did a lot of covers in the early days, and I don't think he's ever laid claim to have written this song?

  • @daiellis Dylan did write this song. Joan Baez covered Dylan a lot at the time and still does to this day. Check out Wikipedia. It says Dylan is the songwriter.

Love this version by the way.

  • @rusholmeruffian91

Bob Dylan ripped this off from Dominic Behan's Patriot Game.

  • who will right the next verse?

  • wonderful - greater than life and time. I love you Joan, from here to eternity.

  • joan baez - nash chelovek.

  • She never sang at Gerde's Folk City where Bob Dylan got his start. They served alcohol at Gerdie's. I'm 72 years old and visited Folk City often as a young man. It would have been nice to hear her sing there. I'm talking about the original Gerde's on Fourth Street. I never visited the club after it moved to Third.

  • This is my favorite of her Dylan covers. There's something about this song that suits her voice better than the others.

  • Dylan is a great song writer but he shamelessley stole this tune from Dominic Behan. Just look up "Patriot Game" by Dominic Behan

  • @Tlax13 Good tunes like the good things in life are ment to be shared.. Dylan hung out with the Clancy brothers in "The white Horse Tavern" so they shared more than the tunes i think Liam stole Dylans Girl.. or was it Dylan stole his no matter....So many american and Irish Folk tunes have crossed back and forth...They are more borrowed rather stolen as long as they create music for a new generation to listen to.. that what counts..

  • the song is irronic, and sarcastic, but in a subtle way. Im surprised an aspie could write something that isnt too obvious

  • @vikkivanilla what is an aspie?

  • @unclebobunclebob , someone with aspergers syndrome xx

  • @unclebobunclebob yo're being sarcastic, right? I don't believe she has this disease, plus, Bob Dylan wrote the song, not her.

  • @unclebobunclebob Dylan did write this, Dylan is Jewish, the bit abiut the Germans was very controversial when the song came out.

  • Been listenning to her Dylan Covers and I like them all. I like her voice a lot. Anyone into Joan's music, please check my band on this channel. Any feedback would be appreciated, coming from people with nice musical taste (if you're here, :) Thanks. Peace.

  • Lovely rendition from Joan - of course an Americanisation of Dominic Behan's 'Patriot Game' which can be found on YouTube. Patriotism being the last refuge of the scoundrel - here's hoping you can't fool all the people all of the time! :)

  • A Chinese proverb say.

we dont' use good steel for nails, or good man for soldiers.

  • New verses are needed, Bob.

  • no answers to the quetions asked

  • iwe do need this now a days

  • Don't blame the soldier. Soldiers love their country and believe their leaders. Soldiers do so what others don't have the courage to do. No matter what uniform they wear or what side they are on, they are doing what their country ask. When the fighting is over they have to pick up their lives. want to blame someone, blame yourself. Bullshit from our leaders, hate from our citizens. Look how we are acting, a handful of nuts kill a few thousand and our thirst for blood has not abated God is LOL

  • @slowpokecat real courage is standing up to your leaders and saying "I don't agree, there's a better way." Its not courage to thirst after blood under god and government sanction. "Doing what your country asks" is just the cowardice to question your country

  • "We forgave the Germans"

What a load of shit. Those who "murdered six million" were punished and executed. There has never been much difference between the Germans and Americans so they made sensible allies. Not to mention excellent soldiers. With war imment againt the eastern hordes we needed every ally we could get.

  • beautiful song and such a lovely powerful voice, it just seems to flow from her without any strain. well done Joan

  • Wonderful song! Joan was beautiful.....such a voice and musician.....Thank you Joan....

  • She is beautiful. Her voice is a match.

  • Never heard this song before, but what fantastic lyrics! I love Joan Baez!

  • It is 2010 thats true. But this song was written about 50 years ago. So I really don't get your post

  • @ bmeade32

yep, and by that time, 1966, nazi-germany was still not over, judges, etc. nazis still were in office, in frg-westgermany. due to cold war they seemed to be"better" than communists, due to western view. change came 1968. in frankfurt&berlin(west).

    greetings from berlin

p.s. even in us of a they employed nazis. wernher von braun. moonshot. remember?

  • Back to the vid.

Thanks Vid poster for this wonderful video.

Joan Baez, a fairly clean Spirit with a clean clear voice, who has aged beautifully, due to her clear heart and willingness to speak her mind

    on issues of importance.

IMO, God's hope is that one day all of of his children will grow up to be true sons and daughters.

    And stop the sibling rivlary

  • My Two Cents : I came from a background of a Jewish father turned atheist in the war, and a french roman catholic mother who spoke little english, when she came to this country. After they married they put all talk of religion aside and allowed me to find my own way.

In my late teens or early twenties, i can't remember now. After a normal childhood and exceptional social life, i had a long lasting experience where I was filled with the Holy Spirit.

  • When this happens there is no mistaking it. To discount the existance of God and Christ consciouness is a mistake and quite a loss.

Since that experience i have had occasion to see quotes from the Bible in print, and have even looked briefly at parts of the Bible, and I can see that there are many truths written in the words of Jesus.

  • It might serve us all better, not to let toxic man (and his actions based on his toxic interpretation of a Spiritual Master who cleansed his Temple of the Living Spirit to discern what was written in his heart) influence your final answer.

  • Just one word to my American, British etc. friends: We love you! We will always love you because you freed us from the Nazi dictatorship! We love you, we love your countries (we really do!) and we're grateful because you freed us when we hadn't got the courage to do it on our own!

    Thank you!

  • Joan Baez and Aaron Neville both did brilliant versions of this classic Dylan song...

  • Leaders of the world, hearken unto this!!

  • Can someone tell me about dylan and baez's story together?

I heard that he cheated on her, or left her for another woman??

I know they were living together at some point..

    can someone please elaborate?

    I love Joan Baez

  • You can find all that information on Wikipedia. Basically they dated till about '64 then Bob met Sara who he later married. He was seeing both Joan and Sara at the same time at one point and Baez ended up showing up at his apartment one day and Sara answered the door which basically ended things between them.

  • thank you!

  • Watch her left hand on the frets - just incredible - and while remembering all those lerrics!!!

  • whata voice! she was and still is beautiful!

  • It is freezing up at .45

  • incredible lady

we need more of this now a days

  • @RegardsPaul330 Very true!

  • So good!! Smart Woman you are Joan:)

    Peace

  • she is so fit

  • Love J.B.

Her lyrics are immortal (however this one is Dylan's:).

  • Just read an article about boys that were raped and mishandled in Christian institutions. The Church wanted to stifle their stories of which there are so many. Thus I had to think of this song. Those hypocrites think they can do anything "with god on their side"....

    We shall overcome (religion).

  • @markus310773 God has never been on the raper's side. You don't need to be an anti-religion guy to condemn such abominations.

  • Rape in christian institutions is normal worldwide,it always happened .Same institution that has a former SS nazi and later in charge of the modern name of the old Inquisition as their Pope. Nobody denies Ratzinger was nazi, there are photos of him in nazi uniform.needless to comment more on this.

  • @canard17

Blessed is who is able to read...

sure ratzinger is pictured with a "nazi-uniform". but it has nothing to do with him being one. he was just a member of the hitler-youth ... if that makes him a nazi, well everyone was one then.

i dont know where you come from but you could compare hitler-youth with boyscouts o.A. except that one had to be in there at some point.

  • cjannack

Sieg heil ! Guess you like that salute.

Bist du Deutch ? Deutchland über alles in der Welt ?

Jews, leftists, democrats, homosexuals, etc, etc were not members of nazi youth.

Anyway, Herr Ratzinger proved he did not enrol there by chance, he was in charge of the modern Inquisition department of the church until he was elected pope. The area of the church in charge of keeping the faith and saying who deserves to be punished.

Sieg heil ! Sie verstehen nicht

  • cjannack and vincet

    1. not all germans were part of nazi youth. The ones that were imprisioned and butchered weren´t.

2 we aren´t talking of a german that ended up being a carpenter, but a pope. Church scrutinize who they designate pope, among many candidates they chose him

3 I said he was ,until the day he was elected pope, in charge of the modern name of Inquisition .

+against contraception means in AIDS time He forgave Levebrist priests who declared Holocaust is a myth

  • Does anyone remember what the protesters used to say back then?

"Fighting for peace is like f***ing for chastity!"

The more things change the more they stay the same.

  • @yumyummoany I doubt 'back then' people use to say "fucking for chastity", but whatever. And Joan Baez was all about non-violent protest :)

  • she is a great story teller. Wonderful and she is so pretty. Can't get enough of her videos.

  • I am so much attached to Sweden. The song is beautiful...

  • Such a beautiful song. Bob's a great songwriter and Joan has a smooth voice

  • the most beautiful voice in the world and she is a beautiful person as well. I'm so happy that I finally got to see her in person this summer, I idolize her. She is just awesome!

  • yea, very beautifull. Why can't We go back ? Something happened , To us . We need to bring back our music ...indie folk, alterative ...60's 70's 80's 90's ...

  • Well to do that we're gonna need another Cold War. I'm not willing to take that risk. ;)

  • I guess, Were going to have to die , for our country ...I would die , for this country so the mother's and kid's can grow up and make wise choices .And as well look back at us , And say if it was not for 4409 ,and the group 1776 , We woukd' not be here .Some day.........if it comes down to it

  • Ron Paul is just a patsy for American Moneyed interests.

  • If that is so, to what end? Why would he call for the dismantling of the Fed if that were so? Please explain.

  • IMO Ron Paul is just talk, no action. The 2008 run for POTUS he showed himself too willing to play the 2 party politics game. Made a deal with the RNC to get in on the primary debates, that prevented him from running as an idependant candidate.

  • do some research

  • "[you've done your] research" <= fixed your sentence.

  • She's hot

  • Would love to know who you think can sing. Britney Spears? WOW!!!!

  • There's something I just can't understand: Why don't people just heed the message and stop killing in the name of God?

Maybe it's just more than I can understand. If someone can explain this to me, I'll surely try to understand. (Though I'm convinced that there's nobody listening to this song who can explain that, but I may be wrong!)

  • A big part of the answer: People kill in the name of what they conceive to be God because humans have a need to justify & sanctify the will to power (the original temptation='Ye shall be as gods'). Even when people get rid of their old conceptions of God, they sanctify bloodshed in the name of something else transcendent: the Party/Proletariat Revolution, das Volk, or "Liberty, Fraternity, Equality" & the goddess of Reason. We run from God by creating false gods who feed our sinful cravings.

  • You're totally right, my friend! Thank you for your answer! If everyone thought about things like you do, the world would be a lot better! (I'm not kidding, I mean it!)

  • Vincet

You confuse magical thinking with the need of mankind to progress and the logical oposition of the ones who must stop it.

Too easy "Voltaire and Lenin same as Hitler or Bush , they sent people to kill " .

Despite their failure to succeed at the end of Voltaire and Lenin , their goal was progress of the many.

God would take sides, why don´ t you ?

Any God you believe in is based on what the managers of religions told you and your parents for years.

  • canard17, I come from a family of nonbelievers, examined various religions critically, & had my acquired faith tested. I have taught psychology & sociology at the university level. Secularists & atheists in the West (usually more arrogant & less open-minded than Chinese atheists BTW) have their own myths. Do some research on the "myth of progress" & you'll be enlightened as to how bankrupt ideological atheism is and discover a richer vision of progress that is emerging through Christianity.

  • Vincet

Christians split dozens of times , each 1 claiming god is on THEIR side (rings a bell ? ) Believe in the magical image you wish +support just causes while doing it. Imagine your god is on the side of the ones that want welfare for majority of mankind. Example : Is the leader of your church for bringing ALL soldiers back from Irak NOW ? For free good heath system for ALL americans using the money spent for banks bailouts ?

By the way, test and faith are contradictory terms.

  • canard17, I am hoping that you are capable of dialoging in good faith, so my response will be based on that assumption. If I am wrong, then you are nothing but an irresponsible grenade thrower hiding behind high-sounding rhetoric. We'll see. Let's begin with this: What do you know about the ecumenical movement? What do you know about papal opposition to the war in Iraq & the USCCB's stand on universal health care?

  • Grenade , good term , your pope threw many to jewish people . Ratzinger was a nazi soldier .See his photo in Wehrmacht uniform published in Der Spiegel, a famous german magazine.

Christians for universal health ? The same church that condoms use of condoms in a world with AIDS ? This proves your priests don´t believe in Judgment Day, or they ´d fear it as few other people would.

Right, we don´t have grounds in common. I am honest, I invite you to dialogue with people of your church

  • canard17, In the film 6th Sense there is a profound line about ghosts spoken by a child: "They can only see what they want to see". If I were a Buddhist I'd say your're a hungry ghost, the ideologically blind sort who can only read the half of every story that he wants to. cjannack has already exposed 1 of your many dishonest distortions. Disingenous how you refuse dialog in a way that tries to turn the table on an iinvitation; only a fool can't see the real reason: You're incapable of dialog.

  • Cause god does not speak for himself. His "representatives " in earth do.

  • the lyrics are just amazing..........

and she sings them so beautifully

  • What lyrics!!!!So currently....

  • credit to Dominic Behan for this song. the tune comes from an older source.

  • Yip, written in late 50's or early 60's. Here is one of the original versions by the Flying Column (lyrics, verses and order sometimes change) ... watch?v=hj45A0R9O0U

  • AWESOME! so true and beautiful and sad. i cried.

  • To add to the comments here: "St. Joan" *also* put her money where her beliefs are/were. Donated (most of) a percentage of ALL proceeds from her albums to a coalition for Non-Violent Action... (Now *that's* how capitalism is *supposed* to work!) God/dess Bless you, Joan Baez!

  • toujours actuel, hélas!

  • Cohen, where are you? I'm trying to find you. Marie

  • She is avery nice elder lady now with the same extraordinary voice

  • She wasa beautiful woman with a beautiful voice.

  • what do you mean she "WAS" a woman, she's still alive for heavens sake!!

  • I mean she was a BEAUTIFUL woman. She still can sing

  • you can be old and beautiful

  • You are fucking right!

  • Comment removed

  • Used to sing this very loudly at school in the 60's.

  • I love how much pain and hurt she can convey in her lovely voice about our country and struggle, something I'm sad to say is lacking in my generation.

  • first she didn't write this song and second many people don't understand the complex reasons behind the 1st world war - in short it was over land.

  • That's not what it's about. It's about the naivety of waging a war against them, then when they surrender, count them as strong allies. Dylan was stating that a nation that was brainwashed by their government, and killed 12 million people. When the war was over, the Germany had God (also speaking as goodwill) on her side. That's how I see it anyways.

  • Of course they had to be confronted. But this song was written and performed only 20 years after that war, and the point being made was that the Germans were already sanitised by the US because they were now a strategic ally against the USSR, and hundreds of Nazis were now the backbone of the American ICBM and Space programmes...and sod the 12 million that Hitler had eliminated in the camps and mental hospitals and across Eastern Europe.

  • God is on your side and he is also against you..... bless the creator.

  • As far as I can tell - "God" is just the collective consciousness of whatever people you're dealing with, at any given moment. And that's a far from "infallible" entity...

  • Love you, Joanie!!!

  • simplesmente perfeito!

  • patriot game is also based on a different tune.

    Thats folk music, accept it

Dylan americanised this version which i like best and im irish

  • I lived the " golden time" when we imagined a different world and Joan was an spiritual supporting from her ranch.

  • true and the world has changed a lot since then , but her songs still sound the same

  • i like Joan's version better than Bob's....

  • It 's the same tune as 'The Patriot Game'

    by Domonic Behan...

  • Makes me feel young again, and sad if only we listened

  • just like to t5hank all those who have put her songs on here. i used to have all her albums, til my ex destroyed every one of them! You bring back my youth lol xxx

  • I lovveee Youuu Joannnnnn!!

  • Thank you God for Joan Baez.

  • I like this song.. it has a refreshing sound but meaningful words

  • I like the fact she ultimatrly walks towards us.

  • damn

  • damn, indeed

  • Joan Baez was def a better singer than Bob Dylan. Bob writes some amazing songs though. Joan Baez's songs are kinda like lullabies, and i mean that in a good way.

  • Joan...I love Youuuuu!!

  • One of the most beautiful people of all time, singing a song of eternal beauty.

  • Slidereaction, I was a hippie. Ours was a group with the power in sheer numbers to change the world. We were also naive in a way few understand. Those in power feared us & OUR POTENTIAL. The Rockefellers , CIA & others introduced social movements INTENDED to kill off our power. Feminism, playboyism, then drugs n free love. Please study the Tavistock Foundation, Aaron Russo's short Interview, & learn. Believe me, you are right, but we never saw what was being done to us either.

  • her voice is sweet fuck the usa

  • joan seems to be wearing a very nice skirt-suit and flats. Very becoming.

  • Dylan was in his early 20's when he wrote this song.. prophetic beyond his years. This song could be written today.. it's timeless. We still haven't learned a GodDamned thing...

  • Well sorta ..lol

The song he took both melody and theme from is this

Come all you young rebels and list while I sing

For love of one's land is a terrible thing

It banishes fear with the speed of a flame

And makes us all part of the patriot game

My name is O'Hanlon, I'm just gone sixteen

My home is in Monaghan, there I was weaned

I was taught all my life cruel England to blame

And so I'm a part of the patriot game

  • V 3 and 4

'Tis barely two years since I wandered away

With the local battalion of the bold I.R.A.

I read of our heroes and wanted the same

To play up my part in the patriot game

They told me how Connolly was shot in a chair

His wounds from the battle all bleeding and bare

His fine body twisted, all battered and lame

They soon made me part of the patriot game

  • This island of mine has for long been half free

Six counties are under John Bull's monarchy

And still De Valera is greatly to blame

For shirking his part in the patriot game

I don't mind a bit if I shoot down police

They're lackeys for war - never guardians of peace

But yet at deserters I never let aim

Those rebels who sold out the patriot game

And now as I lie with my body all holes

I think of those traitors who bargained and sold

  • I'm sorry my rifle has not done the same

For the quislings who sold out the patriot game

sorry about the formatting, you can thank hackers for that ...lol

the song was written in 1959 in Ireland by Dominic Behan and Irishperson.

  • mikehunt626 - not a damn thing. so much beauty around us - so much ugly within us. we don't deserve this earth.

  • This is a wonderful song with a powerful, timeless message. Sometimes we have to open our eyes to reality and not let pride supersede our better judgment. I think this song reveals the hypocrisy and arrogance of America with eloquence and humility.

    Thanks for posting!!

  • Deep song- tells more than you know.

  • If we hadn't all those hippies back in the day offering us peaceful alternatives like LSD trips, smoking weed and catching herpies from lovins, why we would probably still be a Country with God on our side. Joan has a great voice but her politics and those of her kind offered nothing more philosophic then Belly Aching and crying, "I'm feeling guilty for being a spoiled American." Other countries who envied our power, really liked listening to those singing cry babies bash their own country.

  • Wake up! The song is ironic! Listen to the last verses, it's making a very powerful point about the blindness of a nation that believes they can do what ever the hell they want with "god on their side", remember that Bob Dylan wrote this during the Vietnam war, which he was AGAINST.

  • no, she is of Mexican ancestry. Her father is from Puebla. One side of her paternal family migrated from Spain to Mexico three generations ago, the other side is Mexican. She is of Mexican, Spanish and possibly Aztec lol ancestry from her father's side and Scottish, English and French ancestry from her mother's side. Baez is a very common Spanish/Latin surname.

  • many thoughfull words , makes us all think and joan is a stunner

  • That's not entirely true, she has amazing talent. But admittedly, the best songs she sings are Dylan's, and Dylan is a better artist, but she helped him get famous. They helped each other.

  • Joan Baez has Mexican and Scottish ancestry. Her dad was born in Puebla, Mexico and then moved to New York where there is a big population from Puebla. She is active in the Mexican community in New York as an activist and Philanthropist.

She is one of the few famous Mexican New Yorkers.

  • I think Sarah Palin should listen to this song.

  • Mexican Queen = Joan Baez

    Amazing.

  • pas de commentaire, les larmes à l'oeil Si D.ieu était à nos côtés... Paix et Fraternité"..; mais les intérêts sont toujours dérangés!

  • beautiful

  • wonderfull!! And it's true, even after 40 years!!

    God bless you, joan!!

  • joan the beautiful

  • This song is great. I'm constantly amazed by just how much beautiful shit Bob Dylan managed to crank out of his head.
