i about shit my self when tom said he called up dave grouhl to play the drums on SNL. I wish i could see him in concert, with like neil young and Simon & Garfunkel... man that would be sooo awesome
Since of most of today's music sucks, it's great to see that this is one of the few songs from the 2000's I can appreciate. Petty makes a great social point as well.
Metallica is one of those bands. I mean, I own Master of Puppets, and I heard "The Day that Never Comes". I can't believe the same band recorded that.
Now your talkin', this is the real deal. Tom Petty's mountain top experience was when he recorded Traveling Wilburys along with classic rock's greatest. I like his "No Bull" attitude. If after injuring his hand by pounding against a wall and the doctor saying that he will never play guitar again and saying, " Fuck that." is proof that he is a no bullshit deal.
That's what happens in a society that puts a premium on winning at all costs. But I guess some people never learn what's really valuable until they've lost it.
Great song and message. Freedom of choice...priceless. This is still The United States of America. Embrace it while you still can. Tom Petty for President! ;)
I feel sorry for you who drinks and does drugs.Because someday you're gonna be in a hospital bed, dying and you'll know why.Seriously now,I respect your right to drink and do drugs,it's your choice after all.Peace.
The very first time I heard this Song, in '2K2, I SWORE it was written about Jim Ladd of 95.5 KLOS FM Los Angeles. The Thanks on the C.D. Confirm it. Long Live Free Form Radio!
that doesn't exist anymore. get Sirius satellite radio for hearing all the music you want to hear commercial free and uncensored. 200 channels devoted to every style of music imaginable. worth the 12 bucks a month.
It really pisses me off how much this album is disparaged by the so called 'paragons of taste'- the music critics. I truly think this is a great album, yes it's not as subversive as Petty probably thought it was, but it's still fucking good.
Remember this was the first album after Howie Epstein's death, perhaps it represents a crisis of direction? Last Dj is an anthem of a song
Yes. Dana is his second wife. I'd love to know what he did that made his first wife give him up. He could do whatever & I would never let him go if he was mine!
I think it was something about [at that time], they were almost constantly touring, and he was never around. And probably something about him being famous...just guessing, though! :)
Usual causes of rock star divorces: alcohol abuse, domestic abuse, drug abuse, adultery, bisexuality. I'd go with any one of those, or maybe a combo of two or more of them.
I don't mind at all. If you are truly "cynical and dark' then you have no need to conform to the marketing for "cynical and dark". You can simply enjoy the irony.
Let's get off the "Simpsons" since he had it played on there 'cause commercial radio wouldn't play a song like this: "there goes the last DJ who plays what he wants to play and says what he wants to say".....can't believe peeps just smile and nod and talk about Homer as their freedom of choice is crushed.
Just goin' with the tide...talkin' about a cartoon bride...goin' along for the ride... Maybe if you listened to the words you might learn somethin'
One of my local station's played it before. I'm not sure what format it is exactly, but it plays all the stuff you wouldn't expect on the radio (everything from Wilco to Michael Franti to Beck to Tom Waits)
petty is one of the last real musical artits out there. there are so few these days that actually have a real messege, or can even play an instrument. This song is about how far radio and popular music in general have fallen these days. And its so true
and the irony also being how commercial his music actually is. How many hit singles has he had? My aunt seems to remember him being in heavy rotation on MTV when they played videos.
True, he has many popular songs. He was a staple when MTV was worth anything.
I guess he's somewhat like Willie Nelson in that he wants to address a big audience to get some of his ideas out, and is willing to voice unpopular beliefs or present his show outside his core audience. (he played the SuperBowl in 2007 or 2006?)
Thinking of Tim Shaw. UK Radio Presenter who was wrongly fired today becasuse this stupied contry dosent understand how radio should be. Howard Stern, Opie and Anthony and Tim Shaw. Both what radio should represent
I'm always amazed at how 'small and unassuming' (are those the right words?) Petty is- he's a giant musically- and I thought he was this giant physically, too, when I was a teen. I love his stuff
But I think, we have the last dj"s"...but only about 20 years from now...cause they're old...too old..oh makes me so sad..
still hope the world will get smarter and doesnt only want singing models and so on...boy...its so hopeless - but: maybe amy winehouse and mika can do it...(few years ago i hoped for robbie williams and avril lavigne...hopeless, too....)
Yesterday on cebletv saw a program featuring Tom's amazing career but the program covered only 'till Traveling W.+ Orbison band and I missed "The Last DJ" album, my favourite not only for his voice but mainly 'cause he can write tunes plenty of meaningful lyrics beyond nostalgia and in this tune I love the verse related to México where we admire his art.
I think i posted this somewhere else but it flopped. My son and I were too-ing and fro-ing somewhere, and he starts beotching miserably about the crap on radio. So in a flash of inspiration, I pulled out this disc and played him this son. That long haired, megadeth lovin fool been a TPATH lover every since. I guess I do get it right once in a very long time. He's about the bass lines now, especially Change of Heart and Last DJ. Gotta say, the boy is turning out alright.
kudos to tom...i love him cos he plays what he wants to play and says what he wants to say....hey hey hey.....wish i could see him when he comes to toronto...
