I feel Dennis is a more of a natural player than Weckl & Colaiuta, although they are great drummers they sound too studied to me compared to Dennis, he's completely self taught and his grooves are out of this world.

I just came from a Tony Williams channel. You know that makes this fatso kinda unnecessary don't you think?I mean what does this dude offer that hasn't been done about 218.09% better by approx 432 previous and current drummers?
Amen to the bro that told the truth about Dennis not being much of a soloist. i don't think his grooves are all thast. he sometimes nails something but he has diarhea of the hands way too often.
peart sucks period. He's a rock drummer that's all, all he does is basic patterns and rudiments around the kit, so normal listeners would enjoy. he doesnt solo he just plays around like a clown, not changing rhythms just changing set of toms, cymbals, electronic pads, etc... . I like Rush, but Neil as a soloist SUCKS. Chambers is a great drummers but he's not my favorite soloist. great ideas but not my type of flow in a solo, but he's a groove master.
All you guys who keep comparing all these drummers are wrong , you cannot compare two different drummers , the reason being , they are two DIFFERENT drummers , every drummer has something unique about them .

i can't listen to him, he's not keeping a steady rhythm, it seems to me like his drumming is all over the place. he's talented no doubt, accurate and speedy, but nothing flows together.
i don't see how people say that Chambers is way beyond Peart. i just can't.
This man is beyond Peart at every aspect of the drums, hands down. Bohnam would present more of a challenge than Peart ever could. This man would have given Buddy Rich a run for it, something Peart himself admitted he could have never done.

Too disjointed to be really enjoyable for me I'm sorry to say. Talented guy - obviously - but nowhere in the scale of Neal Peart or the late great John Bonham for their natural feel for the drums... speed and dexterity alone don't add up to the same thing IMH.
Rarely you see a drummer who can make an entire song by himself. Chambers has certainly achieved that. Of course, there are many great drummers out there, all of them with their own unique styles, but it certainly is an amazing quality to be able to make a great song with no other instruments than the drums
the left double-bass pedal is next to the hi-hat pedal. So, you put the left half of your foot on the hi-hat pedal, and the right half of your foot on the bass pedal.
The blazing speed, the perfect technique, the amazing feel, the world class independence ... this man has no natural predators. Dennis Chambers is the top of the drumming food chain. The KING !!!!
yeah the left foot movement, i forget what its called but its a techique to work the hi-hat to that constant open / closed sound he achieves while still blastin away on the snare and toms, derek roddy explains the technique in one of his videos, it may be on youtube
It's called the "heel-toe" method. Tony Royster Jr. makes effect of this technique on kick as well. I still think the most mindboggling things about DC, is the way he bases so many of his ideas on pieces of polyrhythms. No matter where he goes with his hands/speed, he always seems to come back to something "african" :-)
If he didn't move his foot like that, he wouldn't consistently achieve that hi-hat sound. In other words, he does it because that's just what he needs to do in order to get the results he wants. So, it's just a technique. Finally, it's Dennis Chambers. Why question anything he does? :)
Yeah. If we make too many rules, then we run the risk of severely limiting ourselves because we begin thinking about it too much. It's gotta be natural. When it's totally natural and all relaxed, we get guys like Dennis Chambers. :)

What's going on with the two-bass-drum-pedals/one-foot thing at 1:37?? Is that a heel on one pedal, a toe on the other??

Watch his left foot. The toe plays the bass and the heel keeps the hihat groove. There's a multitude of techniques like this for left pedal foot.
sniper2073 2 years ago
i've always pondered that concept but didn't think it could be effectively pulled off, i was wrong.
metrognome69 2 years ago
he's just doing doubles on his right foot i guess and substituting the would-be left pedal for tom rolls :)

actually, i think a better name for the technique is "heel-ball-of-foot", because that's the part of the foot you are using :-)
