Ray was certainly an erudite and a well spoken person.
He was also perhaps the best Indian filmmaker of all time and the only one perhaps who could be compared with stalwarts of world Cinema.
Having said that, he was more of a filmmaker's filmmaker rather than a filmmaker whose films could be enjoyed by people of all sensibilities, like Kubrick or Allen films.
Also, from this interview, he does not come across as a very humble person and seemed bit inaccessible/distant too.
@pahari75 this was a documentary made by nihlani...thats more like a biographical learning...and mebbe he seemed a lil distant bcos of his sophisticated nature...but thts who he was..and i know for a fact that he was very humble in nature..he made kamu mukherjee a part of his cast and later his crew just bcos he turned up one day on his door, knocked and pleaded for a role.
this was so inspirational ! thanks for uploading this video! i was looking for this video for a long time! thanks for adding on information on the greatest indian filmmaker of all time!
a truck load of love to the person who uploaded this video. i had seen it in early childhood and had only memories. he is a genius! movie, painting, music, all sorts of writing!! how much time did he have in a day! 30 hours??
My sincere thanks to the person who uploaded this entire documentary! I have been looking for this from years and no one knew where to get it from. Shyam Benegal must be credited for making such an insightful film about the greatest Indian filmmaker ever.
This great person really raised the level of film making to some extend that many great directors will feel jealous. Someone from hollywood can never imagine that Goopi Gayine Baghaba Bayine can be made with such low budget and not so well equipped infrastructure.
In Begali they are both spelled similar and pronounced as RAYE. Also it is important to note that his father's and grandfather's names are widely written as Sukumar Roy and Upendrakishore Roy. Some people also writes Ray as well. It is like saying Rama or Ram. Both are same when it comes to sanskrit.
you think of greats such as welles, hitchcock, ozu, kurosawa, tarkovsky, murnau, chaplin, eisenstein, truffaut, godard, renoir, ford, hawkes, there's a very special place amongst the few best ever, and this man, Satyajit Ray up in the top 10 ever.
its remarkable...really remarkable...on your part to put out this rare gem for public viewing. thanks. I hope more and more people watch it and and learn from the virtuoso himself of his art. offcourse another highlight would be BENEGAL talking to ray. it's rather magnanimous on your part to share it. thanks again.
I can't thank you enough for uploading this rate interview, I am huge Satyajit fan and it was intersting hearing his own observations and remarks regarding his work.
His eyes. His voice. His charisma. He is enormous. Holiness !!

This last shot did two things
1. It dawned upon me, that Satyajit Ray could atleast grin at times. When he says "Life pitched against death...irony" etc
2. I liked Shyam Benegal for the first time for the closing shot.
Thanks Mr. Benegal, Thanks uploader.

It is same. Maybe it looks different in English due to different spelling but in Bengali they are both same with identical spellings.

..but how is it pronounced like the word ray as in ray of light in english or like roy as in say Troy..?
