Question: can the President render a military salute? Is it proper for a President to salute a passing parade or should he put his hand over his heart in the civilian manner?
I don't think those front lines of cadet (leaders) were anything to shout about. Line was way off and you had that one girl so close to the tall guy that they looked like a couple. All the companies looked good. And why would recruits precede veterans? Also, why is the prez saluting?
Thank you for your constructive input. The band was first, followed by cadets, who are in officer training, and enlisted members, who are subordinate. Senior leadership is typically first and the order of the marching sections was typical. The president should return salutes as any other officer would, since he is at the top of the chain of command as Commander in Chief of all military personnel.
This thing of the pres saluting started with Reagan. Even Eisenhower never returned a salute as president ( I am told). And what is it with the VP doing it now. He is not even in the chain of command! In summary, the commander in chief is a civilian, we cherish civilian control of the military, and the president should never give the impression that he is not a civilian commander.
President Reagan had asked if it was proper to return a salute. When told by his military aide that he could he began a tradition that continues with President Obama. It was later learned that President Reagan also returned salutes as a matter of respect toward the military.

Go Coast Guard! My father was an officer serving aboard cutters before pilot training and eventually flying C-130s search and rescue out of Kodiak.

The USCG Band was great along with the cadets from the academy but the last group was out of step.
