think it might be the harp from later in the tune brought foward with an effect of a phaser or flanger on it and more subtle in teh mix.. with a tad extra high end (of course I could be wrong) BUT I rekon they should have updated the drums with better samples too as well midi drums sound a bit dated now BFD!!!!! they should have used that

I have to agree. I thought the drums sounded less dated on the original score from 1985 (when the drums were ONLY on the end credits).

I miss the harp at the end though, and I wish they'd get rid of the whistle. Preferred the short lived sax version, to be honest, over the whistle!

I don't watch Eastenders, but only caught the theme at the end before Watchdog, and immediately noticed the new music. In fact, in my opinion the best thing about Eastenders is the title sequence and the music. The music is much warmer, and the harps sound great on my TV. Well done Simon May.

Only one thing spoils it - the Eastenders logo fading in. Looks like an animation from Powerpoint 97. No exaggeration.

I agree completely. Love the new titles and theme, but don't like the new logo fade-in. I preferred when it used to fade from bottom to top as in all previous versions :( Hope they change that back.

the whistle has been on all versions (except the 'jazzy' version, but was more prominent on the last version, this reminds me of the early theme, particularly the second, slightly tweaked, version of the original theme in around1990.

Having watched it on TV the opening titles have gown on me but the end titles OH DEAR they are appaling IMO, they should have left those well alone, in the old style but the new map obviously. I hate the way the river is slap bang in the middle of the screen then just stops at the end of the credits before zooming out to the map you've largely just seen anyway lol it's like a 'try out' prototype (that was discounted)for what the credits became rather than a new version. Terrible.

The opening titles have grown on me too, but only because the BBC seems to have heeded public opinion and cropped the additional section of river that was originally seen on the right of this new version. But I still hate the end credits for exactly the same reasons you've stated.

Have they ditched the extra bit on the right? I hope so - it's still showing up on iplayer mind you. On my TV (non widescreen) you can't see it but the map looks like its miss centred now with the added bit on the right lol. I hope that another exec producer changes the end credits back and the logo - I really don't like them like they are now. They realy didn't need altering - they've survived 25 years in that design afterall lol

I know, it's weird ain't it- we know the river extends like that in reality but aren't used to seeing it, so it looks wrong! And yup, they cropped the river back to its original appearance really sharpish!

notice how the title takes longer to fade in on the left at the opening rather than fading in all at once (which would be normal)? That alone looks as sloppy as. :)

very true! lol and you're right they have cropped it, or rather pulled the map forward abit, not massively, and not quite as much as originally, but it does look alot better. It just looked rather silly didn't it - unweildy I think! 

It's strange how the title fades in slower on the left, it does look rather sloppy and I don't like the shadows much either, they just clutter up the map!

Not really; people tend to recognise and therefore read words (especially short ones like the title) as a whole rather than needing to scan them from left to right.

I love the addition of the clouds, but think they could have improved the fade-in of the logo a bit better- it seems to take longer to fade-in on the left rather than fade-in as a whole. The music is subtly different but I would have liked to have heard more reference to the multi-racial quality of the East End by way of more sitars like in the middle-eight of the closing theme. All in all, good though- it would have been a mistake to change it too much.

I love watching Eastenders its the only decent soap on the TV , the other soaps lack good storylines , i really do enjoy the new up to date Theme

I believe another reason why they updated it is because they plan on making Eastenders in HD sometime in 2010 or 2011 from what ive heard.

Shame ITV can't do the same to Corrie and Emmerdale, they both sound horrendously outdated now, Emmerdale's did when they introduced it in 1999 with all that bashing and crashing and orchestra lol

The new graphics are pretty cool and at least they havent changed the theme music too much, it's still fairly similar to the original.

It was a disaster when they completely changed it in the 1990s to a tacky synthesised saxophone version and then were forced to change it back again several months later.

the music has some very subtle differences, and if you listen carefully and compare it to the original version from 1985 you will hear many elements (ie the sitars/handclaps esp in the closing bars) included from that in this new version were missing in the last version.

I think the new map etc is interesting but perhaps just alittle TOO google earth. I also much preferred the original way the titles appeared i.e scrolling up, no ther show I know does that, it was kind of a unique feature of the titles. All shows/soaps fade the title in or they just pop onto screen ;(
