  • I would pay to see this animation in a movie...

  • He's a bit like the Hood from Thunderbirds

  • Jason fought 8 skeletons. Jason > Sinbad.

  • @torchkit Jason had men with him.

  • In many ways stop-motion is more believable, because it is actually physically existent, whereas CGI is just a bunch of pixels put together.

  • The way these Sinbad creatures move is so magnificently creepy! especially for it's time!

  • so this is where "spinal" came from....

  • Awesome, just awesome stop motion animation.

Fuck CGI shit, this is how animation should look like!

  • Zelda makes killing skeletons look so easy. This seems more realistic.

  • Excellent quality frame-by-frame animation seamlessly integrated into film footage. As an animator, I actually enjoy watching stop motion more than CGI (especially knowing the time and patience that goes into it). And Harryhausen is definitely one of the greats!

  • Its still awesome as I remember (last time I saw this movie I was 10yo). :D

  • does anyone notice a sharp high pitched sound?

  • lol the look on his face at 2:09!

  • This was one of those moments, when you were a kid, that took your breath away. I've only felt it a few times. (Another was the opening shot of Star Wars with the flyover of the star destroyer, another was the first battle in Pal's "War of the Worlds") This type of stop motion, used as a special effect, is NOT dead... it's just waiting to be rediscovered. When it does, thanks to the improvements due to digital compositing, it's going to be coming back BIG.

  • Bernard Herrmann....HE MADE THIS SCENE WORK WITH HIS AWESOME SCORE!!!

  • Awesome fantasy in every aspect, state of the art stop motion, perfect timing and choreography, great musical score.( it's easy to forget that the actor is fighting nothing! ) this is Classic movie making at a time when computers were just adding machines.

  • That doesn't sound grammatical

    Shouldn't that be Sinwell?

  • They have to stop and move a limb, step away, take a shot over and over again. That's how they did Stopmotion. It was very tedious.

  • The french translation is so evil! Tue! Perce le!

  • My entire love of film making stems from watching this scene as a kid. The special effects, the choreography, the music, everything is just perfect.

  • God I hate people who bitch about how CGI is killing movies these days. Sorry, but no. Good CGI blows this away. I'm a saying this is bad? No, but it's definitely not the best effect ever. Also those that think CGI makes things easier, it's time to shut up. Try taking the most basic of animation classes at the nearest conveniant art college. It is by no means easier than stop motion. Why? BECAUSE IT IS STOP MOTION! Instead of using cameras and puppets they now use computers.

  • @EvilCleric You have a point. Unfortunately, there is way too much crap CGI out there (courtesy of the Sci-Fi Channel) which makes even Bert I Gordon's super-imposed bugs look believable. The big difference, though, is in writing and direction. There is very rarely a movie that has the sense of wonder and magic these old films possess, and that is entirely due to what's behind the camer, not in front of it.

  • the music for this film was incredible. it was by bernard hermann who also did pyscho. note the use of the xylophone in conjunction with the skelton's movements.

  • I remember seeing this movie when i was 5 IT WAS GREAT!Awsome to start watching this movie again!

  • I'm definitely a fan of stop motion, and this definitely took a ton of work and time, but I still think that cgi is an advancement more than a setback. People only complain about cg when they can see it.

Many seem to think that making a cg creature is sooo easy, and just involves pressing a couple buttons. However, in many ways, making an advanced cg creature is just as difficult as the most advanced stop motion.

  • This actually happened

  • It just blows my mind that this movie's fifty years old with effects this incredible.

  • Man, those skeletons kick so much ass it's worth buying the movie just to see them alone.

  • Not really upto the best of CGI, but what it does show is a much greater talent at work. This is a talent which will sadly be lost with computers doing all the work these days

  • Somehow I like skeletons in fantasy movies. They make such creepy opponents.

  • Holy Shit! That was really good for that time!

  • i love old movies..does anyone know a movie with a six hand golden statue with swords in its hands??

  • @tsiris1980 Title is The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, starring John Phillip Law. Only that the statue wasn't gold, but bronze.

  • I think the skeletons in Jason in the Argonauts were more of a challenge to the characters and a bit more impressive looking, but personally I found this one to be a bit scarier. You know he's coming because of the magician using magic on him before, but you don't fully expect that drop as much and the way he just sways there at first looks pretty creepy. The magician seems to be channeling Bela Lugosi with his eyes too.

  • Then how come with the technology that we got they don't use stop-motion (or go-motion) to make it look better? CGI has its advantages but I think the mechanical special effects had more.

  • @Bla31n They did use stop-motion armatures to make the motion for CGI for a few films in the nineties(Jurassic Park comes to mind) but since then that kind of method hasn't been developed further nor has actual stop-motion. Now all people use is a mouse. This is where the alienating side-effect began. The deal here is that you can't do it all with computers. There needs to be more.

  • @Dinoslay Oh, absolutely.

  • It's ironic that this looks so much better than CGI's. Oh well.

  • This skeleton clearly had a bone to pick with Sinbad.

  • That freaking dog whistle... my ears are bleeding!

  • this what I grew up watching as a kid...many kids have never seen this i'm sure.

now we have that cool computer generated junk. It just seems like the skeleton is so real & alive.

  • yes matteroo the music is inappropiate-much too comical- bt at 1:24, it briefly becomes 'sinister'

  • Dude! This is the coolest skeleton! H sure gives Sinbad a run for his money! lol

  • Ridiculous music for this type of scene, no question.

  • Comment removed

  • @mattaroo i disagree, i think the music really builds to the scene and gets my blood pumping at least. And, it has the essential skeleton musical instrument, the xylophone ;)

  • "tue! perce le! "

pourquoi la vide a un tire en anglais et des voix française?

  • 2:07 lmao, it just falls apart

  • Aggressive bugger, isn't it?

  • Our dog would've sorted that thing out. He loves bones.

  • This movie has been, and always will be, awesome.

  • 1:08 that was a cheap shot, bone boy.

  • Spinal! Hehe always my favorite, w/ the bouncy music. No doubt the creators of Killer Instinct borrowed this guy for Spinal.

  • Pretty cool stuff. The music kinda makes it hard to take the fight seriously though, lol

  • I have this movie btw very excallent made 2 thumbs waaaaaaaaaaaay up

  • for some odd reason when they start fighting then the songs starts the song reminds me of the skeletons bones

  • thet's the point and the magic of this piece of music: Bernard Herrmann chose using two xylopones and more clacking percussion to imitate the sound of bones

  • muitissimo legal

  • That dude with the sword--does he have anorexia? He needs to EAT!!

  • Thats not a dude its an olson twin LOL

  • better than cg baby!

  • you can say that again brother!

  • This is the ultimate adventure film in my opinion.

  • pwnt.

  • I want an army of skeletal warriors!!!

  • spinal

  • excellent music by bernard herrmann

  • I love when the skeleton hits the floor!

    BAM!

  • This stop motion effects rock!I believe that Ray Harryhausens imagination and creativity reached it s peak in ''Jason and the Argonauts''.You have to see the skeleton scene of that movie!

  • skeletons are always hard to defeat both in movies and games.

  • me and my cuz as kids used to rent this movie all the time and whene the movie was done me and him would act aout the hole scelitin scene whith toy swords, great times

  • i grew up watching these movies back in the late 80s early 90s when they used to show on the disney channell during the day

  • Aww, you never get battles like that in MMORPGs these days.

  • im only 12 and these are my favorite movies i like to live in the past becaus the movies back then were actually good!

  • Why would a skeleton be afraid of dying?

  • Pinche musica de marimba esta con madre!!!

  • I cant beleive this shit is here... I saw this when i was 6~.

  • Skeletons in a movie have catchy music!

  • One of the greatest fight scenes ever! Man how I wish we could get the innocence of that time back!

  • Kerwin Mathews died on July 5, 2007 at his home in San Francisco. Torin Thatcher India-born British actor who played role of Sakkura the magician died in 1981 in Thousand Oaks, California.

  • For fans of "Old School" stop motion animation, check out my short film, "Googatz the Icky Man".

It is my homage to Ray Harryhausen and his classic animated scene of the skeleton fight from "7th Voyage of Sinbad"

Please watch if you desire, and leave a comment if so inclined. Subscribe to easterfilms and we will do the same.

  • Anyone know what the Magician is saying?

  • He says "KILL...KILL HIM"

  • This was what I watched as a kid!

  • When I was young and I watched this movie I had nightmares :D

  • That skeleton scared the hell out of me when I was a kid.

  • So much better than CGI ....How much we have lost!

  • RIP Kerwin Matthews

  • How did they do that?

  • It took,at that time, a lot of patience and knowledge about animation!it means so many works!

  • from what i understand, the film acotrs acted as if they were there, and in the studio Ray projected the video image behind his models and shot both frame by frame.

  • @3vhilTvvin

stop-motion animation. back in the day, this was some high tech film wizardry.
