  • Saw them last night! Simply amazing!

  • They opened for Dallas Green in Toronto and I was absolutely blown away by how great they were.

  • Saw them live with C&C two nights ago.. Stole the show, IMO.

Come at me bros. I'm also a really big C&C fan.

  • It just gets better and better.

  • massey hall w/ city and colour on feb 10... anyone else?

  • saw them live with city and colour last night. sooooo good

  • I get this song now, I think. About the losing end of Darwin's theory. Not the clearest lyrics in the world (Darwin's theory is about what succeeds as well as what fails, and the Mayflower made it, despite casualities, and founded a nation), but Low Anthem aims high, and the musicians are genuine and gifted.

  • Saw these guys yesterday evening opening for City and Colour in Calgary. I had never heard of them before, then saw the stage filled with SO many instruments. I was blown away by their set.

  • Saw them last night at City and Colour. They're amazing !

  • I saw this group on Tuesday night, I am disappointed by the quality of the tracks on their cd. Their live performance was so much better. Are their recorded tracks intentionally tinny and shallow sounding? Someone give me some insight!

  • just saw them like 2 hours ago, they opened for city and color. at first i was like dafuq is this shit? but then i was like wow this is chill.

  • Beautiful...going to purchase on Itunes! Your voice, the music and of course the lyrics are perfect.

  • Fucking amazing...

  • favourite song

  • first tme for me what a beutifull sound wonderfull

  • i like them a lot, but their music always makes me cry :o)

  • I've seen these guys every time they've come to my town. This is always the song that gets me close to tears. Unbelievable musicians.

  • Beautiful. Amazing technique. So unique I love this song so much

  • he sounds somehow garfunkelly

  • My god that's beautiful...

  • I love you Bon Iver. Never better.

  • They have the Best Folk Music Mustaches Award in the bag.

  • BEAUTIFUL!

  • Saw them live in Indy... I had to apologize to the people standing directly behind me when they brought the saw out because my mind completely detonated.

  • Saw them with Mumford and Sons and Matthew and the Atlas. Most mind blowing night of my life.

  • Walked into the stage they were playing on at Electric Picnic to get out of the rain while waiting for Massive Attack. Best. Rain. Ever.

  • this is, and always will be my favourite performance ever. saw them live recently and they didn't perform this song, i have never been so disappointed. but they were great, so it's okay.

  • I saw them in Madrid 2 days ago

They were awesome, but sadly they played in the wrong moment and in the wrong place in a festival that didn't choose a lot of folk bands, so everyone there was expecting fast music and some of them got dissapointed. I felt sorry for them...

  • magnificent...helps open the eyes when they seem nearly closed

  • I saw them at Bonnaroo and it had to be one of the best sets I've ever seen. Half the (blank) crowd left after the first two songs, and they did a version of this song which had to be one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. Utterly amazing.

  • @ssbxvm They are a special band, the music they create is just wonderful. I'm going to see them again in two weeks time along with Villagers and Fleet Foxes. Can not wait!

  • @RayAndPES I guess you mean green man. I sat through their set with my teenage daughters at my feet and tears in my eyes. It was magical. I grew up with big sound in yer face music. this delicate, beautiful sound is a revelation to me.

  • i got to see these guys perform for mumford and sons. so amazing

  • One of my dear YT friends recently introduced me to Bon Iver and now Low Anthem. Two treasure troves of musical excellence and then some.

  • A friend turned me on to this band a few days ago. I've never loved a guy more.

  • Music like in the old days! Incerdible String Band, Elephants Memorys, The Beau Brummels aso. are reborn! I'm totally amazed. I found another musical idols with 60 yaers! Hope that The Low Anthem will further on!!!

  • this is simply fantastic

  • this song is awesome, especially on that animal cruelty commercial.

  • I saw these guys before most people knew who they were, in a small book store in Syracuse, NY. The atmosphere was incredible, it was like nothing I'd ever seen, and I've seen nothing like it since. I saw them once that September and once that January. In between they were featured in Rolling Stone and a bunch of other music magaizines. They're truly an incredible band.

  • Saw them live last night with Iron and Wine. Incredible.

  • @cdizzlesiberius I saw them support Iron & Wine last sept. They were 12 times better than I&W

  • @RayAndPES not true

  • @RayAndPES Nah bro! I was there too! These guys were great, but not like Iron&Wine!

  • @bordozmusic Don't get me wrong, I'm a big Iron & Wine fan, but the gig got a tad boring in my opinion, he should have been supporting these guys.

  • @RayAndPES hey... iron and wine is also great

  • Sounds like Sarah McLaughlin

  • folk musics gonna live forever

  • Thanks NPR. Wouldn't of found em without you.

  • That is some of the best harmonica-playing I've heard. Beautiful!

  • i'd hit hit

  • saw them live with the avett brothers... incredible. wish they'd been headlining.

  • I can't get over the fact that this voice is the same voice that sings The Horizon Is A Beltway. It's crazy!! So beautiful on this one and then so raw on other songs. I'm just speechless.

  • Saw them at last year's End of the Road Festival. They were superb. Ordered the CD from Amazon first chance I got. Every track's a winner.

  • I heard this on Skins and now i cant get it out of my head absolutely phenomenal in its own

  • @drummerhustla087 what series?

  • @RayAndPES Skins: Season 4 episode 7

  • The two "dislikes" must be from the unhappiest people in the world. I'm sorry that you can't feel the absolute majesty contained in this song.

  • @zinrgy It's disgraceful how anyone could dislike this.

  • @zinrgy Sad, sad people

  • Listening to this song brings tears to my eyes, one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard.

  • @JoelMatton It's just sensational.

  • Actually she playing just tuned cymbals. If you notice they are arranged in an order and playing with a violin, viola, cello or base bow, a method that has been experimented with for years and is called bowing.... with the advent of more precise computer aided tuning the cymbals can almost be arranged like a keyboard. This is sort of akin to filling crystal wine glasses to different levels of water, wetting your finger and lightly wiping over the rim of each glass to get the haunting melodic tones

  • that man is truly an angel <3

  • @emaandnina Isn't it just wonderful.

  • i guess one person could NOT hear the words of Charlie Darwin? :/

sorry it had to be done! :D Amazing song..

  • awesome. saw them at the egyptian room in indy feb 28 2010 and been hooked ever since. great great great band.

  • sounds a bit like Claudio from Coheed

  • what is the cymbal thing she's playing?

  • 40-50 years.. earlier might be mooving..

  • I saw Low Anthem in Athens, Ohio last February and they stood tall and amazed me. How original and talented. Angels all.

  • fantastic discovery

  • Nice. The singer bears an uncanny resemblance to Cliff Curtis, the conquistador from the movie The Fountain!!

  • Yes the ruling class psychopaths certainly have taken themselves to be somehow naturally selected to rule over everyone else, in the big lie of the survival of the fittest – they’ve done a great job at being self obsessed greedy bastards but evolution is a constant and civilisation is just around the corner.

  • I didn't know John Frusciante was a mexican bandit...

  • The emotion this guy puts into his singing proves just how much he believes what he is singing.

  • what a voice

  • beautiful.

  • achingly beautiful!

  • These guys make me want to cry every time I hear this song.

    True beauty.

  • I seriously want to marry this song.

  • Hey we are a new studio in Florida. We have been getting the best bands in the area to perform live in our new web-series called off the avenue. Check it out!

  • THIS is music.

  • so wonderful. gives me goosebumps

  • saw them today, amazing live

  • Will someone for the love of god tell me what key this song is in so I can buy the right harmonica to try and learn it!

    Thanks in advance

  • Comment removed

  • @AaronT95

I have taught myself this song.

The song is in the key of "C"

There is a lot of "G" , Amin, and G throughout.

    The harmonica is "C".

I had to learn the song in order to tell you for sure.

I am quite sure you need a harmonica in the key of C. I played along and "C" was dead on tune with the harmonica.

  • @irishbear76

Thanks dude, much appreciated!! Now to buy a harmonica in the key of C and start trying to figure out how it works! I will post a video up of my cover of the song when i'm done, see what you think!

  • @AaronT95

    I cannot wait!!!!!!!!!

Send it to me as soon as you upload it.

I love this sound, song, band etc...

    Blessings!

  • Every once in awhile, in music, a song comes along or a sound comes along that makes you take notice.

This is an example of this phenomenon.

I have seen many powerfui and memorable live performances.

This is one of the best I have ever seen.

    Beautiful.

    Thank you for uploading RayAndPES!!!

  • @irishbear76 so true man. im going to see them live in 2 weeks time.

  • @RayAndPES I am glad for you :)

  • @SuperMageo Cheers, I've already seen them live, they supported Ray LaMontagne last september

  • @irishbear76

That you can find words for them!

    I can't.

I can only listen, with a wide open mouth and goosebumps from my feet to my neck...

  • @HFburn

You should check my music out on my channel.

    Wormwood at least.

I relate to this band like I relate to my music.

Great band. I am a new fan, but I know genius when I see it.

  • this is so beautifull! waaw, i'm impressed !

  • Much better than R&B and that sort of music.

  • A beautiful piece of artistry by stoners for stoners.

  • @andimon2010 I'm pretty sure this a is a pretty piece of music by awesome musicians for everybody who will turn an ear.

  • @andimon2010

    your mom is a stoner.

  • good folk !!!!!

  • what is she playing?

  • @JosephKingOfKids

That's what I wanna know. But it kicks ass

  • @JosephKingOfKids

It's called crotales. Yeah, it's amazing.

  • @JosephKingOfKids I think they are called crotales, tuned cymbals basically.

  • @JosephKingOfKids

just saw them live a few days ago, she's actually playing symbals with a violin bow.

    great live, i'd recommend them.

  • asian mustaches are possibly the coolest thing that could happen to a face

  • @MrSevensvens he's mexican-ish

  • @RayAndPES The cat on the right is asian-ish.

  • I saw them at firehouse 13 in Providence about a year ago..

  • this song never fails to give me goosebumps.. beautiful

  • i saw these guys a year ago in new haven. ben is a really nice guy. its so great to see how much they've grown as a band in such little time.

  • So damn beautiful.

    This song touches my soul.

  • Beautiful music and truly inspiring. hope I can see these live sometime.

  • going to see them tonight in Dublin....can't wait

  • I agree with NoekieB: probably an entire set could bore, but this song is magic. Someboby please post the Letterman version!

  • @fzaio have seen them twice this year in the u.k. and i can assure you they do not disappoint, they do mix it up and do tom waits covers and are just very talented and original i think . worth catching

  • Magic! Hoping someone may post their Letterman appearance from 14th Jan? No sign of it anywhere!

  • I'm waiting for that post too. If you find please tell. thanks

  • Its on the letterman site

  • Yes! Glad I found a LIVE version of this...just saw them for the first time ever on Letterman tonight, and had to learn more about them. This song sends shivers through me...absolutely gorgeous! Amazing! Touches the soul!

  • Oh my God, Charlie Darwin by THE LOW ANTHEM (from Rhode Island) is one of the best albums of 2009. "And who could heed the words of Charlie Darwin, Ben Knox Miller laments in a lovely, layered falsetto, The lords of war just profit from decay.

  • Heard these guys live in Dublin and i think to fully experience them-it hast o be live, cos his voice works that way, if you listen to the almost whispering nature of him here. It is beautiful.

  • @ Akidintheaddik -- It's called a "crotale" or "crotales". Can be played by either striking the discs with a mallet (producing a bell-like tone), or by bowing (producing the more ethereal sustained tone you hear).

  • There's something so ethereal about this song ... beautiful. Thanks for posting.

  • Saw them opening for Ray LaMontagne and they went down a storm. Have both their albums now. The only thing that annoyed me at the concert was the bowed-instrument thing got a bit annoying after a while. Love them though.

  • what is that beautiful bowed instrument??

  • Absolutely gorgeous.

  • Exquisite

  • anyone not finding this moving and beautiful has lost their soul.

  • @sidgrit Im extremely disappointed that they didnt show this on the full version of the show last night

  • Then I'm afraid I have indeed lost my soul. I saw this band live a couple of weeks ago, and though one or two songs sounded ok, the rest of it just bored me. I can see why others would like it, but it's not for me. I can't listen to it without falling asleep...

  • Comment removed

  • @sidgrit I find my bowels moving.

  • Great song... thanks for posting!
