I get this song now, I think. About the losing end of Darwin's theory. Not the clearest lyrics in the world (Darwin's theory is about what succeeds as well as what fails, and the Mayflower made it, despite casualities, and founded a nation), but Low Anthem aims high, and the musicians are genuine and gifted.
Saw these guys yesterday evening opening for City and Colour in Calgary. I had never heard of them before, then saw the stage filled with SO many instruments. I was blown away by their set.
I saw this group on Tuesday night, I am disappointed by the quality of the tracks on their cd. Their live performance was so much better. Are their recorded tracks intentionally tinny and shallow sounding? Someone give me some insight!
Saw them live in Indy... I had to apologize to the people standing directly behind me when they brought the saw out because my mind completely detonated.
this is, and always will be my favourite performance ever. saw them live recently and they didn't perform this song, i have never been so disappointed. but they were great, so it's okay.
They were awesome, but sadly they played in the wrong moment and in the wrong place in a festival that didn't choose a lot of folk bands, so everyone there was expecting fast music and some of them got dissapointed. I felt sorry for them...
I saw them at Bonnaroo and it had to be one of the best sets I've ever seen. Half the (blank) crowd left after the first two songs, and they did a version of this song which had to be one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. Utterly amazing.
@ssbxvm They are a special band, the music they create is just wonderful. I'm going to see them again in two weeks time along with Villagers and Fleet Foxes. Can not wait!
@RayAndPES I guess you mean green man. I sat through their set with my teenage daughters at my feet and tears in my eyes. It was magical. I grew up with big sound in yer face music. this delicate, beautiful sound is a revelation to me.
Music like in the old days! Incerdible String Band, Elephants Memorys, The Beau Brummels aso. are reborn! I'm totally amazed. I found another musical idols with 60 yaers! Hope that The Low Anthem will further on!!!
I saw these guys before most people knew who they were, in a small book store in Syracuse, NY. The atmosphere was incredible, it was like nothing I'd ever seen, and I've seen nothing like it since. I saw them once that September and once that January. In between they were featured in Rolling Stone and a bunch of other music magaizines. They're truly an incredible band.
I can't get over the fact that this voice is the same voice that sings The Horizon Is A Beltway. It's crazy!! So beautiful on this one and then so raw on other songs. I'm just speechless.
Actually she playing just tuned cymbals. If you notice they are arranged in an order and playing with a violin, viola, cello or base bow, a method that has been experimented with for years and is called bowing.... with the advent of more precise computer aided tuning the cymbals can almost be arranged like a keyboard. This is sort of akin to filling crystal wine glasses to different levels of water, wetting your finger and lightly wiping over the rim of each glass to get the haunting melodic tones
Yes the ruling class psychopaths certainly have taken themselves to be somehow naturally selected to rule over everyone else, in the big lie of the survival of the fittest – they’ve done a great job at being self obsessed greedy bastards but evolution is a constant and civilisation is just around the corner.

Yes! Glad I found a LIVE version of this...just saw them for the first time ever on Letterman tonight, and had to learn more about them. This song sends shivers through me...absolutely gorgeous! Amazing! Touches the soul!
Oh my God, Charlie Darwin by THE LOW ANTHEM (from Rhode Island) is one of the best albums of 2009. "And who could heed the words of Charlie Darwin, Ben Knox Miller laments in a lovely, layered falsetto, The lords of war just profit from decay.

@ Akidintheaddik -- It's called a "crotale" or "crotales". Can be played by either striking the discs with a mallet (producing a bell-like tone), or by bowing (producing the more ethereal sustained tone you hear).
Saw them opening for Ray LaMontagne and they went down a storm. Have both their albums now. The only thing that annoyed me at the concert was the bowed-instrument thing got a bit annoying after a while. Love them though.

I have taught myself this song.
The song is in the key of "C"
There is a lot of "G" , Amin, and G throughout.
The harmonica is "C".
I had to learn the song in order to tell you for sure.
I am quite sure you need a harmonica in the key of C. I played along and "C" was dead on tune with the harmonica.
