This is 1 of my favorite songs - period. So FUNKY & funny. Nice to know Chaka's got a good sense of humor along with those vocals skills. Written by the 2 guys who wrote Patti Austin's 'Every Home Should Have One', Musker & Bugatti I think.
Great singing, excellent players and funky as hell with a lot of humour thrown in. This was a huge hit on the local airwaves in Edinburgh. I managed to get the album recently on CD. Yeeeha!!
Just got this CD and many others of hers via the internet...Have always loved Chaka Khan...huge fan...and this has easily become my favorite song of hers in a short short period of time. It's undeniable...Sexy...Catchy...I can't say anything bad about it...rowdy fun, and completely repeatable...thank god I didn't have to pay hundreds of dollars to snag this CD...got a great digital copy for free...complete with artwork...cherishing it mightily!
Amen, Bluesky! We, the true fans, listen to the *WHOLE* albums and gain meaning from the radio hits *AND* the slow ballads. Another jam that should have been on constant airplay was "Caught In The Act" from the "I Feel For You" album. But as we all know, Warner Brothers is intent on removing Chaka from the planet. Nobody will ever know why they refuse to sell her 1982 self-titled album in Asia, but not in the U.S.
I'd love to hear her sing this or "Tearin' It Up" on an awards show or in concert soon. Too many people are stuck on stupid with "Through The Fire", "Sweet Thing" and "Ain't Nobody". I love those songs, too, but they are not the only classics that she's got under her belt.
That's the "mainstream" that likes and expects those songs. It's like R. Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly" is what the mainstream knows. We R&Bers know of tons of other stuff by our favorites that the mainstream would be scratching their heads over.
Chaka's willingness to branch out and explores different styles of music is one of the reasons I love her. I dig the "Soul Train" meets "Grand Ole Opry" fusion on this song from her self-titled 1982 album.
Another thing that perplexes me is how many of her fans back in the 70's and 80's forgot her. She still records, but gets no airplay. This woman is a legend, but many people stopped buying her albums after "I Feel For You". I think that the public is fickle and doesn't appreciate her true talent.
Patti has 2 Grammys? Since when? And it's all about how you shake your tailfeather. If you are a size 4 with big breasts then you'll get a Grammy hence part of my disdain for them.
Amen Bluesky. I said the samething many years ago. Though, back when Chaka was winning Grammies, they had meaning. i remember other singers who shared the best female singer nominatiion being nervous - because no one could touch Chaka's profound musicality and vocal power. Those were the days!
2 years ago i was fortunate enough to purchase a cd version ($12 w/shipping) off of ebay. as you may know, not many cd's were produced of this album. this is one of those rare albums in which i like every single song on it. it's always in my care. "best in the west" is right up there with "papillion"
I'm in agreement that this is probably the strongest album Chaka ever put out. Such great tunes and spot-on vocal work! I feel it marks a zenith in her career. A must-have for any Chaka fan!
Another annoying thing is why this album is only available in Europe and Japan. What the hell is Warner thinking? After all these years, they still will not release it in the USA. It seems to me that they are trying to diminish Chaka's staying power by prohibiting the sales of her albums. I mean, really!
I couldn't agree with you more Blee. On top of that have you looked at how much it would cost to buy it. This is one of Chaka's best album and they are doing a great disservice by keeping it from being release. This is her only album they refuse to release. I too would really like to know why.
i was able to purchase a cd vrsion of this album 2 years ago off of ebay. $15 w/shipping. i consider myself very fortunate. as you know, finding an album version is rare and finding a cd for the price i did is even rarer. it came from japan(all english lettering) I LOVE THIS ALBUM FROM BEGINNING TO END!
I remember hearing this when I was 15 and sitting in the bathtub. I was hooked from the very first gunshot!!! This is a bad beat, and it makes no sense why so many people only associate the "I Feel For You" album with Chaka and totally bypass this one. It's a classic!
By the way, Chaka Khan won a Grammy Award for best female R&B singer for this album. Also, she won a Grammy for best vocal arrangement for 2 or more voices for "Bebop Medley" from this album. If you don't belive me, check out the record books. By the way, the same year she won these 2 Grammys, she also won (with her group Rufus) the Grammy for best R&B duo or group for "Ain't Nobody". Chaka is truly a diva to be reckoned with.
This is the best Chaka Album. You get the best of her vocals and undisputed range from any artest on the planet or atmosphere. This cd leaves my mouth open.
Thsi whole album is tight! This should've been a single,,,a lot of Caka stuff has potential for release as singles even years after the original production, ie. So Close, Watchin The World, Got To Be There, etc... Warner execs. were not wise at all handling her - tragic - shame on them!
A very under-rated Chaka cd. I know this song's a bit cheesy, but her voice sounds great. Discovering this cd in her backlog was amazing for me. Great memories.(Madonna ventured into the West with her cd Music, but Chaka did it 2 decades before)

OMG! I love me some Chaka Khan, from the 70's with Rufus and especially back in the 80's. She was on fire and she should of been hotter than she was.

Who cares about a Grammy? If Britney Spears' non-singing self can win it's really not based on talent.
