Spartans and Romans never fought....Macedonia took over the Greek peninsula and isles and then when Rome took over Macedonia, it took over Greece too so the Spartans never really fought Romans....I hope this isn't a history think you show students....
Macedonia phalanx, like Spartan and Athenian phalanxes, could not be turned to face reverse direction. Romans would take the phalanx in the rear with cavalry every time. Phalanx was good, until the flexibility and discipline of the roman legion came on the scene. Not to mention Roman brutality.
@AmirKhanUchiha No, I've never heard this. But I know from history, Spartans didn't defeat Romans in the times of Roman Glory, and in earlier times their weapon had been too old to fight against Romans. In addition Roman tactic was much better.
@BlackHawkPictures23 thats true, but you see this should be rather called spartans versus gladiators. Gladiators were slaves of romans not romans them selves.... this right here is entitled by someone that knows if he was actualy playing against romans things would go quite differently than the turkey slaughter that just happened :)
Sorry but this not a good video, The Spartans could never allowed close range infantry like the Romasn the room to manouver around them, plus where are the Pylon Spears thrown by the Romans at close range?. The formations are too loose as wqell for both sides, in history they could face a walll of shields & spears crashing into each other.
most of the people are believing that the spartans would win just because of the movie "300" truth is there were 300 spartans..... and 1000 arcadians. and in this battle, for what ever reason, the romans in the battle were gadiators instead of the heavl armed legionary cohorts. im not hating on the spartans, im just providing information
@MrChrisw33 Spartan Phalanx/Hoplite was a heavily armed warrior with a massive brass/bronze shield, breastplate, greaves, handguards, helm, etc.... they were heavily armoured troops and the best trained troops in the world at the time since their society was based on military system. its unfortunate that hollywood has the ability to make a bullshit and make everyone beleave that spartans marched naked into fights.... people are getting more stupid as the technology increases. This is a sad truth
spartans we not armored good romans were and romans kinda are like spartans so depending on the amount of romans and spartans depending on who could win and if a spartan in real life fought a roman it could be a tie
@darnjack0roll i'm not greek,i'm romanian, and their tactics wasn't doing any good cause of the terrain where greeks were trained to fight, they were heavy infantry and romans light infantry,if they battled at thermopylae or other place like that the greeks would beat the crap out of them
@darnjack0roll Because Thermopylae was a bottleneck. No place to fight but head on, and no flanks exposed. The Greeks would kill ANYONE. They were the supreme heavy infantry for head on combat. The Romans beat them by flanking them. The Greek lines were locked in place, and difficult to manuever, whereas the Romans could just walk around, and attack from the sides and back. ARE YOU GETTING IT????
@747t Read a history book bro for the reasons that Greece conquered from the Romans. As about tactics the only real batlle was at Kynos Kefales and there warent any Spartans, at this time Sparta was a shadow of what it was before 250 years and had about 900 families.
@darnjack0roll The greeks would NOT get "beaten up" head to head (in other words) FACE TO FACE with Romans. Unit to unit front to front, the Romans would get skewered. A phalanx is nearly impossible to defeat from the front. This is not yet involving tactics. LEARN TO READ, AND STOP WITH THE STUPID IRRELEVANT RESPONSES.
@darnjack0roll Because you're a fucking idiot. The Romans attacked from the SIDE, not the FRONT. GET IT?!?!?!? A phalanx is only good face to face. GET IT?!?! You're fucking stupid.
@darnjack0roll 300 Spartans + 1000 other Greeks held of hundreds of thousands of Persians because they fought face to face in a bottleneck. Once the Persians flanked them they knew they were doomed.
If you don't understand anything I said, don't bother responding.
um...sorry to burst your bubble but, Sparta fell to the Macedonians in the B.c era. but the Romans did fight some name Spartacus. not spartan. sorry......
@starwarslife12 actually phillip II and alexander never chose to actually conquer sparta. that was the one part of greece that wasnt conquered by the macedonians. dont have my history book with me at the moment but you can feel free to look it up. lacedonia was the territory of greece under spartan control.
if you look at the history books the romas did fight the spartans and won. you got to remember spartans were great fighters one on one but the romas where great is a team. the spartans had longer training but the romas had more experiance because romas were always on the move etheir protecting their borders or capturing someones kingdom.
@Strikeeaglex spartans were not great "one on one" fighters. they fought in the phalanx formation, which relies on UNITY and COHESION. without that, the phalanx can not function. each soldier uses their shield to protect themselves and the person to their left. you break formation, there goes not only your protection, but the protection of the person to your left. the phalanx also could not turn to face flanking attacks quickly and that was a huge disadvantage that the romans exploited
you all daft. depends on tactic's if spara had there phalanx deployed in a square like shape and there muscle backboned behind them, they are un-predatorable. meaning they wont get attacked from behind or the sides each are covering each others backs which makes them a dominate force. ive had 5000 romans vs 800 spartans and i won with that tactic
@awaker200 could work against infantry easily. but you are also tightly packed, which makes you a great target for artillery and archers. sure the side of the square facing the ballistic attacks will be better off, but what about the side facing away from the archers and artillery? you cant chase off the archers because they are too quick and breaking this square will cause your defense to collapse. being flexible, adaptive, and aggressive works better than being a turtle and on the defense
Romans and spartan troops had good fighting styles, but the Spartans had trained all their lives for this. But the Romans had far superior numbers of highly trained soldiers, but it all depends on the situation.
@DaddyWarbucks452 The Romans came much later and by their time, they develop ed far better technologies. The phalanx was also outdated. Rome also had greater resource and manpower, thus could have sustained more instance fighting for longer time. I believe that the Spartans were better warriors, but in war skill alone can't produce victories.
r u serious! those r glatiators in the gmaenot the romans the spartains were amazing soldires i know but show thieragod gainsed accually goo romanoldires and what would ctually be most of the roman army
After defeting the Persians,Greeks had civil wars nearly every day.All these wars made Greece powerless by the times of Rome. When Rome invaded Greece,Greeks didn't even unite to face the challenge. Some Greeks allied with the Romans while some other stayed out of trouble for as long as they could.I believe that if Greeks were united,Rome would never had conquered Greece.Middle Ages wouldn't exist and mankind would have marched on moon centuries ago.
the only wrong is that after the pelloponisian war(if we dont count the thebes) greece was united by the macedonians n was spred across the world(phillip the second n alexander the great) after alexanders death, his empire was divided into pieces n these pieces were taken by rome. but in many points u are correct, if greece had a new leader rome would have been kicked out like persans before :-)
@zk8551 the greeks were divided as long as there was a greece in ancient times. and during the persian wars they still bickered amongst each other, and the coalition of greek city-states almost fell apart during that part. read Herodotus's : Histories
So they did lose. Depends on what Roman troops are used. Spartans almost always attack in a phalanx, which they where very powerful against a charging force. But this formation is weak against unorthodox attack strategies. So if the Romans charged the Spartans head on and fought like the enemies Sparta went against. Spartans would win, but they would suffer heavy loses. If the Romans attacked from multiple fronts (like they often did) and scattered the Spartan formation, they would win.
Yeah they were. First Punic War, Carthage hired the mercenary Spartan Xanthippus to take out the approaching Romans, which he did. But Sparta as a city-state wasn't fighting alongside Carthage. If they were, it might have turned out differently. But I'm sure Sparta in her prime would have been one hell of an opponent for Rome. Xanthippus was successful in routing Romans, so who knows.
By the time Rome came to power Sparta was a shadow of itself it did not have the same soldiers the same city-nothing the noly reason why they virtually died out was their racist attitude towards foreigners wishing to be in the Spartan phalanx it was just disregarded so the Helots revolted the Greek cities ganged up on 'em and you know how that went that's what you get with an unfair oligarchy and a rising foreign population with no rights to be men.
