Oh this is MBC's version... I remember that clearly. At that moment, the caster was Mr.Song in-deuk, who was the most superior announcer(caster) in Korean baseball league. He died of lung cancer, like Peter Jennings.
I miss his shouting voice at the 1980's baseball match. But he talks nothing in this clip.... what a pity.
The music for this segment was composed by Greek artist Konstantinos Vita and it has never been released and nowhere to be found in an original version.
The creator and director of the Opening (and Closing) Ceremony was Dimitris Papaioannou. Choreographer was Aggeliki Stelatou and costume & set designer was Aggelos Mentis. A group of the most humble people one can be lucky enough to meet. Great proof that humility can succeed results of great superiority.
This is so superior to anything else we have seen in olympic opening ceremonies.Way above beijing and sydney and i doubt whether an opening ceremony in the future will outshine this.Just overwhelming.
I love this so much and so awsome.... thats why i choose Athens Games to the top five best Olympics. It gives me goose bumps ! My top choosen were : Montreal '76, Los Angeles '84 , barcellona '92,Sydney 2000 and Athens '04.....
This part is the most interesting part in greek olympic. We can see all of greek history for about ten minutes shortly. but It is not short to notice of that greece have the interesting and great history and culture. Especially Their performance was excellent. It makes me think of they were something like mannequins or robots. Of course It was totally wrong thinking. :) Just I'm thankful for making me to be interested in history more.
The music is ''Taksidi Sto Xrono'' by Dimitris Papaioannou. He is the greek genius who created this amazing parade. You can get the song in one of the official Athens 2004 albums. Regards
The best Olympic games ever, I love that country. It's a pity that the greatness of Ancient Greece was destroyed by Vyzantio and Christianism. All these great temples and the olympic games, the ideals of that time, where vanquised :(
Hello people everywhere. Be glad because afterall, WE ARE ALL GREEKS!!!Greece is the cradle of The Western Cilization. Sciences, Arts,Law, etc. are still used today. Roman-Latin language has been totally influenced and borrowed words from the Greek Language.Aproximately there are about 490,000 words greek or of greek origin. So can we really denie our origins, our past? The Western Civilization is in fact the Greek Civilization! And we are all Greeks!

I disagree that Beijing's was messy and unconnected. I think this is because of cultural misunderstanding. It had to introduce China's 5,000 year old continuing culture while projecting itself as a modern power. So instead of a linear history lesson, it focused on their 4 great inventions. Each number had many layers. Example: the printing press segment was also about Confucianism, evolution of calligraphy, and the Great Wall.
the beijing ceremony was spectacular and the sheer numbers of performers impressive in its own right; i still feel that the 2004 opening ceremony offered an ORGANIC link between ancient times and ours demonstrating the continuity of greek culture through myth, legend, history, science, arts and athletism.
the klepsydra part was greatly staged, absolutely dramatic, backed up by an equally haunting music.

Beijing did that too. But it had a different cultural outlook. Besides, their ancient culture is still with them daily. Confucianism is still alive, everybody still uses the 4 great inventions.... China really hasn't changed much. Too bad they didn't obligate themselves to praise the Greek heritage of the Olympics. Maybe they thought it wasn't necessary since they already have a 5,000 year continuing culture to present in one night.
for ike74ph . but we greek change and shape the world , but chinese culture still dreaming . every thing else it`s only words , in vain . classical culture , ellenistic culture and byzantine culture that it`s nothing for you? :)) .
It wasn't my intention to put down Greek contribution to world culture. It's great and all. There's no denying that. But China has it's own culture worth looking at and emulating. Besides, the future looks set for China to overtake the USA in less than 100 years. Don't tell me they're still dreaming.

Very artistic, creative, historical. This part is so amazing. Ive never learned more about Greece in 10 minutes and i know there's more. Most olympic opening presentations are people scattered around in the middle of the stadium doing acrobats, pageantries, forming this and that etc but this one is unlike Ive ever seen. I like the blue guy floating in the air. Is he cupid?? Who's he? Good job Greece!
Yes it is cupid. before that part you first see him with the man and woman playing in the water. They fall in love and new life is then born. I love that part too. your first sentence describes it completely! makes me proud being a greek! I cant wait to watch todays ceremony. Good luck China.
He is Eros, the greek god of love and desire (later the romans called him cupid). He floats through the centuries cause love is the moving power of mankind and he is always present.
It's nice not hearing any commentator. Eventough they did give me some insight that I'd never learnt in school. But watching this triggered me to learn about Greek more..
I really like the music here. The visual presentation was high-concept and economical. No big presentations like Sydney or Seoul but still delivers the cultural message of Greece. To present Greek history in terms of the progression of its art and done in just ten minutes was a great way of retelling how Greece contributed to the world's culture. I offer my highest praises to the Olympic organizers and to the Greek people.
This opening ceremony has been so tastfully put together! Kudos to the Greeks for managing to so beautifully presenting their history in such an innovative way. It's beyond description of words how wonderful this segment (Clepsydra) and the whole ceremony has been. This is the best opening ceremony ever and will definitly be hard to beat!

Gracias, Grecia!
"When the echoes of our laughters silence; laughters old like the fog and impermanent like a foot-print on the sand... when our futile vanities fade in time, the Gods will wish that this message of a previous future remains intact and that the memory and the beauty of their civilization survives, like a sublime herald of what the human kind once was... Thank you Greece!"
A little tibit of cupid flying through the air: the ancient Greeks believed that the concept of Eros=Cupid was a deity who embodies not only the force of lust and love but also the creative urge of ever-flowing nature, the creator of destruction but also the firstborn light that is responsible for the coming into being and ordering of all things in the cosmos, that's why he is seen flying from the heavens through out the eras. :)
The first woman was the Minoan godess of Snakes (the Mother Godess) In Minoan civilization, the women were in the same position with the men, and furthermore, women had theit boobs (lol) out of dressing

Great ceremonies. Like the different camera angles this clip shows. Thanks for uploading it. :)

I wonder if the woman who lead the parade was really topless...I mean that's how ancient Greek women did dress, I'm glad it's authentic!

The first woman was the Minoan godess of Snakes (the Mother Godess) In Minoan civilization, the women were in the same position with the men, and furthermore, women had theit boobs (lol) out of dressing

No she wasn't topless, that was body paint. Very well done I might add, from a quick glance it almost looks like she really was topless. LOL! :)
