  • I switch.. i'm in Malaysia so most times when i use my nigerian accent it's either they don't quite get me (due 2 d pronounication difference) or dey say i talk too fast so i'd hv 2 really talk Chinese.. not speak chinese but, talk like'em. My other african friends like from Tanzania sometimes dnt get me so i hv 2 talk like dem but d rest of'em like S.Leone, ghana, Cameroon r cool...

Basically, switching accents 4 me is not abt d formings.. it's sumtin i'm used to.

  • you are not the only one. my bestfriend is from the virgin islands and he does the same thing he switches too! It normal! Ihere your accent in every video. there nothing wrong with it love your channel! I found you on your blog so i had to subcribe. peace!

  • lol wow... I had a friend who i knew 2 years and she sounded american but when i went to her families house she had a strong accent! I was so shocked I never heard her speak like that and never know she was from virgin islands lol. awesomeness!!

  • Also Naija; abroad for 12 yrs. It depends on who I'm comfortable with. With my family it's my natural Naija accents. with Americans/Canadians it's my American one. i meet other Nigerians and my naija accent increases as the time passes and I get comfortable. If they r speaking with and Am accent I'm not comfortable enough to go naija. now and then my brain gets confused if there are two different ways to pronounce a word in the two accents like 'embarrassment' or 'imagination'. Proudly 9ja sha.

  • IM always switching over from british to nigerian and nigerian to british caus i grew up in nigeria but i live in the uk and no one understands me when i speak in a nigerian accent

  • I am Nigerian too but grew up in the Uk so i have both accents, I am back in Nigeria now (been back for a while) and I talk comfortably in my Nigerian accent, but I was in the US for summer, and when I used my Nigerian accent, no one understood me, so I had to switch to English accent in the US. it was fun though cos most people thought it was cute

  • do you think in nigerian? for example when you count can you can add and subtract in English? Do speak a nigerian language that is seperate or do you speak in englich in nigeria?

  • pssshh...whateva i don't care about others. if i am straining myself to hear your american accent you can damn well strain yourself to hear mine. my accent is the same american or non. the darlings just think its sexy and go "I wish i had an accent" o______O....er, you do.

  • i guess from my own point of view ..the whole accent things we nigerians do is mostly coz of adaptation or just to fit in and not be the odd one out .. coz like for me the whole accent thingy is all for the reason of adaptation to wherever place they might be in , in other for the communication to be more or less awkward depending on the situation at hand

  • @redeyedcarter it's not just conscious adaptation. I came from Naija age 16 (now 28) and I fought to keep my accent. But when u hear the same sounds over and over again for years eventually u start to unconsciously adopt the new cadence and pronunciation. I'm still very proud of my Naija accent and when i'm very passionate (or angry) about what I'm saying it comes out (and confuses the heck out of some locals LOL). i think that the North American accent doesn't convey emotion like ours does.

  • i loved this video :)

  • First of all I don't have any other accent to switch to since I have only one accent my Nigerian accent, but when I speak with Americans I just try to make my English as smooth as possible to avoid them telling me they don't get me or things like that. It works perfectly fine for me, but when am with other Nigerians I go with my natural accent or even Nigerian pidgin depending on the closeness.........nice series though keep it up I been watching all your vidoes and its interesting.

  • i come from Guadeloupe ( French West indies) and it's the same for me. I have my french accent for school ( now for my job) and my natural accent in the rest.

  • I love your way of thinking about your accent.

You have a beautiful accent. I'm french and when you speak i understand better english ;)

  • I can totally understand where you're coming from. I'm american but I was raised in Louisiana, so I have a Southern/creole accent. When I moved to Washington state no one could understand anything I was saying & just made fun of the way I talk. I'm always corrected on how to say words, it gets really annoying. I realized my accent is a part of who I am but I try to tone it down when talking to others that I'm not comfortable around because I don't want to be corrected and judge all the time.

  • I tend to switch over my accent alot especially when I am talking to other Nigerians

  • Sometimes people will pay more attention to you, because you have an accent. Don't change for anyone. Be yourself :)

  • can we hear your american accent?

  • same with me when am speaking german with nigerian accent

  • I don't think we do it intentionally. We just unknowingly tone it down depending on who is talking to us. I talk closely American accent with my American friends and nigerian accent to my parent or fellow nigerian who has accent. Idk but it just happens

  • mehn u are so passionate....

    cool.....

I think fizzym4c has spoken well 4 me...

  • lmao, i remember when i was talking to my nigerian friend in a taxi. After we reached our destination, this man was like wow i love your language, lmao, funny we were speaking full english but with our nigerian accents lmao

  • @missjoannie89 tru same with me.

  • well I' not sure if I tone down my british accent at all - well not knowingly:) moreso I would throw in a few niga words when chatting to my own people to make the conversation funnier or for better understanding. I say be who you are when you speak. naturally with time and the longer you live & mingle with americans, your accent will undoubtedly change even without you really noticing. your accent may get in the way in class but it'll certainly change - I know it as I had the same issue

  • Men i dey blow my naija accent wel wel I no send anybody.I feel weird talking in an America accent it makes me sound stupid so I just trying to pronounce words clearly.

  • *My accent changes with different people. And it's not just Africans. There was this indian that was a friend of my sisters. She'd talk to us in a pure American accent, but when her mum called her (on the phone), she'd start blowing straight indian accent like no man's business.

*I guess my American accent comes on when I know that whoever i'm talking to won't understand my Nigerian accent. Plain and simple.

*Also, faking (British) accents has gotten me out of situations before in the U.S. lol

  • i was born in america but i grew up in a nigerian household and at school due to my parents and their accents i kinda had one many nigerians im hearing me would be like... wht accent but i go to school with many americans and if u pronounce or enunciate diffrently from them it means u have one.. i love my culture and my accent and even my lack of one i just enjoy tlking and being me a nigerian american :)

  • I fully understand!!! and it makes complete sense!!!!! I'm Cameroonian and depending on who i'm talking to the accent is different :)

  • Honestly, that "where you're from?" questions has started to get to me. They keep saying "you sound British," like wtf! I was born in Chicago, but raised in Nigeria, I LOVE my accent and glad that people understand what I'm saying. I feel like this accent thing makes me speak softly to some people, but I can like to shout when I'm speaking to my African people lol. Love you gal! :)

  • But cos i was in a university where alot of my friends were Nigerians nd some wid Nig accents my British accent wasnt used as often so it reduced lol but yh man ur not d only one who flips accents talkin 2 different people. As i sed been here 4aslong as u have bt been bck quite a few times in that period tho and everytime i go bck i find that my Nig accent isnt d same,it always has a lil bit of d british accent stain in it nd peolple someimes notice even wen i fink i ave a complete naija accent.

  • I know exactly what u mean b trust me, im in England now and i cam ein 2005 like you aswell and the accent flip happens to me aswell, when i speak to British people my accent changes to a British one but when im talking to a proper Naija person i could speak in a British accent but i feel very uncomfortable speaking to a naija person in a British accent so just get bck on my Nig accent u know wt i mean soi understand where ur coming from.

  • I wish I had a Nigerian accent, because most people assume I am akata because of the way I look.

Let them get distracted! You need to come to California, there are plenty of people here with accents. If everyone had to "tone down" their accents, this place would come to a halt.

Never compromise yourself for the convenience of others. My parents could have given me an American name, but they chose to give me the name I have now. If you compromise with your accent, then when will it end?

  • Definitely My acccent comes up when I'm talking to my fellow nigerians, I can bring my accent in and out and it's gotten better since I schooled in nigeria the whole of last year. but darling you accent is going and I times like 1:52 it sounds choppy and forced a bit. I'm just telling you the truth! Find out a way to keep your accent! It's lovley, igbo accents are lovley! don't lose yours! =)

  • i originally have an american accent .when iam around my Nija ppl my Sisters & Brother my Nija accent would come out mainly bc when i hang around a certain group i tend to pick up accents. Iam not saying i do it purposely but when your enjoying someones company it their or the way they talk sometimes rub off on me.

  • i originally have an american accent like a white person but when iam around my Nija ppl or my Sisters and Brother my Nija accent would come out sometimes and its mainly bc when i hang around a certain group i tend to pick up accents not saying i do it purposely but when your enjoying someones company it their or the way they talk sometimes rub off on me

  • It's ok to have an Accent as long as you are not trying to impress. As long as you can communicate accent doesn't matter and that is just me!As for you Girl your videos at least the once I have watch there is nothing Americana Accent there

  • I love your accent <3

  • I was born and raised in America (Illinois) and moved to D.C. for school. Even being from the states, it was brought to my attention that I had an accent. It was a number of things, from pronunciation to terminology. I often found myself speaking differently with people from where I'm from than those who were from different places because I was tired of repeating myself. It's always been easier to mask it in different places.

  • I Like this,I lived in albuquerque in 1979-1980.i found out that i have an accent,I am from OREGON in the northwest section of THE UNITED STATES people would tell me I talked funny and ask where i am from I would tell them where and we would talk about it.But i realized then and there that everyone has an accent even in different parts of the same country.THANKS

  • well lets be real, its our innate desire to be understood thet make use phonatics like americans when we are over here.beleive me if an american can hear igbo i would not even bother speaking english let alone puttin up an accent.it some wierd shit going on right here and i finna go back home

  • I hate that to cause im East African (Kenyan) and i hate when people try to hear my accent instead of listening to me. ask in im sorry i LOVE americans but to be quite honest, they are pretty shallow minded most of the time. they dont know that africa is a CONTINENT and NOT A COUNTRY!!!!! So i totally agree with your opinions...dayum i agree with all your opinions lol

  • i do the same thing to without realizing it.....actualy am kenyan n when am speaking to a nigerian i speak like a nigerian to lol!

  • Love your accent! :-)

  • For me its just an involuntry thing it come out base on who , where and subject matter though i love my Nigerian assent but whenever i handle mic the Amerian thing just come out of me uncontrolable.

i will forever be a Nigerian

  • most immigrants do the same all the time.I'm kenyan and live in london so my accent switches depending on who i'm talking to!if its in lectures as you said i switch to an english accent and if im talking to family i switch to my african accent.I think its a way of adapting to your surroundings nothing wrong with that :)

  • language is all about communication so communicate to ppl in a way they'll understand. i stay in london & i remember when i was campaigning in my school politics the whites wouldn't understand my accent so i had to become so good with theirs so i could pass my message. so accent or not just make sure your audience understand u perfectly

  • omg!! i thought i was the only one.

  • Lol I totally understand what your talking about. I'm Nigerian and I have a Nigerian accent but I've been living in London for 6yrs now n when m wiv my Nigerian peeps I sometimes go Nigerian and when I'm wiv my London peeps I go British. I think the reason why we switch accents *well for me* is because when I speak in our native accent, my british friends always go "Sorry?" "Pardon?" Could you repeat that? i didn't get that etc and to be honest sometimes it is embarrassing lol n now m used 2 it

  • This is interesting, although I was born in Nigeria - I don't have an accent cos it's gradually disappeared as I've grown up away from Nigeria.

I dont/can't switch accents, although I can imitate a Nigerian accent, and it's hilariously funny.

It's so sad because most Nigerians I meet in school will judge me because I don't have a Nigerian accent, "fake Nigerian" . Being Nigerian is more than having an accent.

  • U make perfect sense omo naija.

  • I do the same thing every time. I switch accents when i talk to people i'm not used to cos if i don't the first question they ask me is where I'm from even when it has nothing to do with anything. Some people say its cos i'm ashamed of where i'm from and but that's the exact opposite of it cos I tell people all the time I'm Nigerian I just hate when its a distraction from something i'm doing like work or school.

  • I dooo thesame and now i feel like I have lost my Nigerian accent !! Lol am not confused and I cant really switch that much anymore .. Its weird I understand about the thought process although my accent I would say is more neutral now :)

  • yes! lol i do that too but yeah pretty much for the same reason i feel like an accent is like a dialect, use it to help the people around you understand you better to avoid repeating your statements...

  • Accents are just like gears or clothes ...the right one for the right occasion ..I switch from naija to British accent as well, but what makes mine even worse is that i still switch from my North london accent to a deep Scottish one when in scotland cus for example if you ask person for direction with an english accent there...the person fit direct you to the north sea lol

  • People (including Americans) switch up their accents all the time. Someone who speaks ebonics isn't going to take that to work. It just wouldnt fit that environment. I was born in Nigeria, raised in America but I went back home and did my Secondary School. I was also raised around whites half of my life and African Americans for the other half. I'm not being fake when my accent switches. I don't even realize when it happens. It's Natural!!!!

  • Lol the first time I heard you, I thought your naij accent was pretty konk. I've been here for 6 years, and I still don't know how to switch.

  • wats d meaning of the 'iham' exclamation u make intermittently?

  • Haha that's funny that you switch the way you talk. I'm Nigerian but I was born here. I have an American accent but when I'm with my Nigerian friends/family I put on a Nigerian accent Bc most of them have one

  • I am Trinidadian and I always speak in my American accent, but apparently it is not good enough. People constantly ask "are you Haitian?" I cant imagine what they would come up with if they heard my natural way of speaking!

  • Lmbo! Sooooooo true! Im. Constantly switching wen I tlk with my friends at school! We use broken, nd sometimes speak igbo to each other... Thers something about nigerian accents that make a story more interesting/funny lmbo

  • iFeel the same way at school <--- about being comfortable with people 1st before letting them see the "real" me lol !

  • yea i switch up alot too ...i thought i was the only one goin thru tht doe ..cool tin im not alone abi omo naija ..but smtimes i tease my frnds wit my naija accent wen im with my sis in class

  • @taiyel LOL...I DO SAME TOO.AND THEY WOULD NOT FEEL A THING..HAHA

  • It depends on how ur raised girl. My first 11 years of life was basically outside nigeria. I have a nigerian accent, but weirdly when im not talking to other nigerians i instantly switch. Its due to being raised in both worlds where if i spoke like an american i would get picked on in school in nigeria and vice versa in america. So it becomes part of u.

  • I watched this because of your video after this (and because I'm watching all of your videos) but honestly you didn't sound American to me in that video. Just sayin

  • @LethalLemonLime that's good!!!

  • lol i get you it's weird im British so i have a London accent and i was born here and never been Nigeria before (bad i kno lol... rectifying that soon) but whenever i'm with my brothers and especially when i get angry my Nigerian accent that i picked up from sum where comes out lol and i speak angry Nigerian if you get what i mean it's weird lol

  • my mom is from the caribbean and i am mad that she didn't pass on her accent to me! she always spoke "american" around us growing up unless she was talking to family or back home. I do notice that I pick up accents very quickly though. especially in the caribbean. i feel like it's my inheritance lol

  • Hey everyone!!!! Just to let you know I read ll your comments but it's so hard to reply to all!!! So feel free to send me messages, I reply to those ones, but it takes time too!!

  • my friend always ask the same question 'how come i don't hear your accent'

dude, if i spoke with my accent u'll barely hear a thing, but when i'm talking 2 my friends from Nigeria or Americans i'm really close to, i do use my accent....I mean its not smart to talk to some1 in ur Nigerian accent knowing they won't understand.....and i get really mad when ppl say i'm faking it, uhm d-oh, i'm not american!!! my accent comes on and off freely depending on who i'm with.

  • WHen i lived in the nigeria i used my accent the most. Now i use it when im reminiscing with friends and stuff. My fisrt accent is my american accent and my 2nd is my nigerian one. I love them both (:

  • hmmmmmm....what I do is try to talk a little slow, cuz we nigerians are hecka fast when we talk, so that the party I'm talking to understands what I am saying.

  • i refused to adopt a british accent even after 4 years of living in london naija all the way if u cant here me then fuck off

  • my dear it's the exact same way with me..i do it because it comes naturally..when i do it, i just think of myself expressing a different shade of who i am, so i guess i try to be myself at all times even with added accents..i don't think you should feel like you're being fake, if it comes naturally when you speak to different people, then it's who u are.

  • An accent is beautiful, it's something that makes you who you are, something that sets you apart from the rest. I'm actually in the exact opposite boat. I'm a Nigerian, but i was born in America, and i dont have an accent, although sometimes i honestly do wish i did. i dont like when people focus negatively on an accent, and it hurts me when i hear someone trying to get rid of their accent to 'sound american'. if you are comfortable with your accent, speak it, and speak with it with pride

  • Our experiences are somewhat similar to each other. My speaking with an accent only comes with my level of comfort around someone and how I think in my head. I also think that most people strive to sound American so they do not stand out from the crowd and become the objects of other people's jokes. I just say speak, however weird you may sound. We all sound weird in another man's land at some point in time.

  • I go through the same thing. I am South African and said to sound ''American''. I guess it comes with hanging out with a bunch of Americans.. Who cares how you sound, it should not be important right? O.o?

  • It's absolutely beautiful and so are u! ^_^

  • I am an American. Born and raised in the metro area of the Nation's Capitol. So when I hear an "unusual" accent (from another country/continent) I am absolutely in AWE! It's so beautiful. I have many Nigerian friends, most of whom have adopted an "American accent" but tend to switch up when they are talking to each other or imitating their parents or talking to themselves like psychos, haha, but I love when they speak in their natural accent. Please embrace it. Talk with it forever and always!

  • I think most foreigners do the same thing. I def do it, even here in Germany. the thing is, if you don't 'edit' your accent, some people don't just understand what you're saying. sometimes accent twisting is essential to communication. (not that i support people who do not understand other people's accent)

  • I do the same thing. I have noticed however, that it's not just us Nigerians, it's all foreigners. Jamaicans, Haitians... everyone. We feel comfortable around our own people.

  • I do the same thing with my haitian accent... When im in school i use my american accent but once im with another haitian person i switch and my regular accent comes out

  • I was born in the US, but I am a pure bred Yoruba girl. Of course my "regular" accent is American, but when I speak to my family or my boyfriend (who is also 9ja) my 9ja accent comes out.

  • I use to hide my [Haitian] accent in high school cause people made fun of me soo bad but now, IDGAF! i can curse you out in a different language as I walk away leaving you feeling stupid :)

  • Ya...I do the same.

I don't like it when I'm talking and all I hear is "omg, u have a different accent, where r u from" *giggling* it annoys me. So I find maself switching bak and forth and I think its something all we africans in the US do!

  • I totally feel u on dis o! Mine also changes dependin on where I am and who I am with n I don't even know why. Do u adapt a Msian accent when u r in Msia? Cuz I did when I was there n I was just visitin la. I get an Indian accent with Indians and I feel they feel I am mockin them but I can't help it! Chimo! How we go do na?

  • I Live In GA, But I Was Born In Canada & My Mom Is Jamaican. Every Time I Meet Someone New They Ask Me. "Where Are You From??" In Complete Bewilderment. I Don't Have The Strongest Accent Ever But I Guess To Those Around Me I Don't Sound Like a "Local" From What I've Seen An Accent Switch For Alot Of People Isn't Conscious, But Something They Do Naturally Around Different People. Well Atleast Thats My Take (^_^)
