That sound is gotten from harmonics played with your picking hand, not with your fretting hand. Its not like the usual harmonics at the 12th, 7th, and 5th fret. You get this sound from playing a string with you pick, and then immediately after touching it with your thumb. For tutorials you should search Youtube for Squealies, pinch harmonics or pick harmonics

@precuthen The other two notes is a chord are the 3rd and 5th intervals from the scale. For example in the key of A major the root or 1st interval is A. The 3rd is 3 notes down the scale from A and is C#. The 5th is 5 notes down the scale from A and is E. So the notes that make up a a major chord are A,C#,E.
@precuthen oh i can help u with that. i learned it in book i bought (theory). okay for ie: lets take c chord.
its every other note: c-e-g. 1,3,5 . or lets say g chord its: g-b-d notes. its same 1,3,5 notes in that key.
say ur out and someone says play a b chord. and u think to urself how do i do that? easy say to urself okay. its 1,3,5 note in b key. so its b-d-f. b is found on 4f 3s, d is found on 3f 2s, and f is found on 1f 1s. now u know u just formed a b chord. easy ha?
@precuthen oh okay ur a newbie then ha? lol ha ha.. i'm not....(kidding). okay just google: notes on fretboard and then print it up. memorize the 6th n 5th strings fret by fret. u have a heads up if u know ur alphabet from at least a to g. ha..:) enjoy its fun. once u memorize the 6th n 5th strings. then do what i did. i started with a note and found the a note on each string and plucked it. keep doing that for about a week then move on to next letter "b". and so forth. u will get it.
@bantakuntum101 He's telling you the music behind playing so you can play music with a band or to a backtrack, rather than play by yourself and mean nothing.

David I sure appreciate your lessons. I have been playing for many years and have had a real problem understanding what you are teaching. I first came across your video comparing a Les Paul to a Epiphone. You are a great teacher and you have a personality that makes people want to listen to you. Please keep up the wonderful informative videos.
but just one question: if i want to play this in a different scale, should i just change the rootnote(i don't know how to spell it) to the E if i want to play in in E?
@bantakuntum101 no way, David is a teaching a lesson, not performing... listen to what he's actually saying. he's saying a lot of really insightful stuff about the guitar and how to play it. it's not just about memorizing the notes he's hitting.
@focckker Not a rude note, but a root note. It's the note the solo centers around, and most of the time (but not always) it's the first note of a song/solo, and it's often the last note (of course, not always either).

The bridge sometimes in a different key but sometimes not....Take easy songs first , The Ramones are great for that
i have been playing lead for 5 years now, and i can solo pretty good, but i cant make solos, i just cant grasp making my own, but i play other famous solos to the note. how can i make my own, i really don't understand theory. any tips?
@cshanna21 find the key and just play up the scales a bit then skip some notes or just repeat some notes in the scale.and just fell around some notes out then you got your lead. I use a lot of " Passing tones" so it just sounds natural
For all the beginners looking at this i got this instructional interactive cd the other week and its improved my playing ten fold. Search for this on ebay Not Getting Any Better at Guitar?? ~~Learn To SHRED!~~ its well worth the small ammount of cash i paid for it.
No there isnt. There can be a flat or sharp note but not 3rd. A 3rd in a chord can be minor, major and sometimes augmented or diminished but there is no such thing as a flat 3rd. Unless america has different music theory. In england there is no such thing as a flat 3rd.
He didn't say flat third though, he said flatted 3rd. Which is a minor third in terms of intervals. Don't immediately attack him, he's merely trying to teach beginner guitarists some stuff. I'm not even a beginner I just like to watch his videos btw xD
Same here im not a beginner but i like to back track and pick up things i missed. This guy shoulnt teach as he does it badly and will put any beginner off to a bad start.
@Onelife2liv13@Onelife2liv13 Yer he means minor 3rd but saying flat 3rd it just bad musical grammar. Whats he going to call it if its not flat? Theres no such thing as a natural 3rd or sharp 3rd. As i said before its either major, minor or in really jazzy and obscure chords augmented or diminished.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
How can this guy teach??!! You beginners, please find another teacher. He does not play guitar very well and he obviously does not know the theory behind it. If you are learning guitar, do yourself a favor and search something else. He is a fraud.
that guitar is amazing hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
i picked up a guitar for the first ime about 5 months ago. since then, i've got a friend of mine teaching me(for a nominal fee of coarse) and i've improved very much. Now i'm by no means a good guitarist, but i can play a song if i practice it for while, and the best advice i can give to those who are just learning to play is to FIGURE OUT WHERE NOTE ARE. This dosn't ncesarily mean to know the notes, just where to put ur finger to make the right sound.
How many scales and arpeggios do i actually have to learn to be a good guitarist? And how long will it take to learn what the note of each fret on the fretboard is? a while ago i where at this musical college, and i stood there like a fucking retard, not knowing anything theoretical. worst day of my life -_-
It didn't take me very long, just about a year for me to get to know almost everything there is. But im still learning alot of other things too. You don't have to nesicarially know everything to be a good guitarist, just a few tricks and scales and how to do them and your set.
if you learn a bit of piano it'll be alot easier. Cuz it's really easy to see each note and once you learn some piano chords then those notes that you are playing are the notes of the arpeggios. Then all you do is find the notes on your guitar and you've learnt the theory behind an arpegio. It's really easy to look at it and understand it in piano format because all the notes are there were as in a guitar they overlap. I played piano first then took what I learnt o piano and put it on guitar
To learn the notes on a fret board.... I try to work on memorizing the low E string and A string first. I find that most of my beginner/intermediate bar chords have their rote notes on those strings.
I know what you mean pal. I been playing on an off for 3 years or more now (mostly off) and I can only say I'm not even close to OK at playing. But I think it's more of an enjoyment thing ... as long as you can have fun while playing then it's all right :)
Thank You David That Was A Great Way To Show Me In Layman Terms How To Find The arpeggios Threw out The Old Ax . I Never Really Learned Properly. I Am Self Taught and have been playing for 30yrs or so I Regret not learning The Mathematical Aspect Of Music That And Having 4 Kids Kinda Slowed me Down A Bit. LOL .Its Refreshing watching you Play. I Love Your Attitude Man.I Am Just Getting Back Into This Thing. Only Now All The Answers Are Right Here In Front Of My Face Love It thanks Dave.!!
@bmohr37 yea it sucks when people like me and you been playing for years well ive been playing for 5 years and im just starting to understand theroy and the more i learn the better my riffs or solos i write sound more cool and creative
Yeah this is a great lesson. I learned a lot. Blues is oddly enough one of my more favorite scales to play but the problem is I'm expected to know a lot more.. Not to much blues in metal but i'm making it work.
Several of Kirk's solos are around the pentatonic scale.
Try adding the corresponding major pentatonic scale to the key signature of the song.
In other words; if you would normally solo in the e minor pentatonic box at the 12th fret for a song, try the c sharp minor pentatonic box (standard blues box) at the 9th for a change in emotion.
There are normally spots in a chord progression that this scale will fit right in.
Wow!! What a practical and useful video!!!!!

c# is B!!!!! you r making it harder

@RsGhost1
Still though, if ur a beginner u would prbably want to learn the correct way , and not get used to such weird terms as "flat third".
ragrytakr 1 year ago
@GingerChris212 Oh whoops he did say flat third afterwards.

Same here im not a beginner but i like to back track and pick up things i missed. This guy shoulnt teach as he does it badly and will put any beginner off to a bad start.

@GingerChris212 flat 3rd == minor third
Onelife2liv13 1 year ago
@Onelife2liv13 @Onelife2liv13 Yer he means minor 3rd but saying flat 3rd it just bad musical grammar. Whats he going to call it if its not flat? Theres no such thing as a natural 3rd or sharp 3rd. As i said before its either major, minor or in really jazzy and obscure chords augmented or diminished.

How can this guy teach??!! You beginners, please find another teacher. He does not play guitar very well and he obviously does not know the theory behind it. If you are learning guitar, do yourself a favor and search something else. He is a fraud.

i picked up a guitar for the first ime about 5 months ago. since then, i've got a friend of mine teaching me(for a nominal fee of coarse) and i've improved very much.

And how long will it take to learn what the note of each fret on the fretboard is? a while ago i where at this musical college, and i stood there like a fucking retard, not knowing anything theoretical. worst day of my life -_-
Kadadj 2 years ago
It didn't take me very long, just about a year for me to get to know almost everything there is. But im still learning alot of other things too. You don't have to nesicarially know everything to be a good guitarist, just a few tricks and scales and how to do them and your set.
Ask me anything if you want to know.

if you learn a bit of piano it'll be alot easier. I played piano first then took what I learnt o piano and put it on guitar

dude if you wana learn theory and how to play lead visit anyone of my vids and leave me a comment on this subject and i'l upload a vid for ya cheers

To learn the notes on a fret board.... I try to work on memorizing the low E string and A string first. I find that most of my beginner/intermediate bar chords have their rote notes on those strings.
As for scales and arpeggios? I have no idea.

I know what you mean pal. I been playing on an off for 3 years or more now (mostly off) and I can only say I'm not even close to OK at playing. But I think it's more of an enjoyment thing ... as long as you can have fun while playing then it's all right :)

Yeah this is a great lesson. I learned a lot. Blues is oddly enough one of my more favorite scales to play but the problem is I'm expected to know a lot more.. Not to much blues in metal but i'm making it work.
baronkline 2 years ago
sure there is...
