An experienced gardener can outproduce a commercial farmer per sq. yard by as much as 5 times the yield. This is easily accomplished because the gardener has more time to spend on individual plants for watering & correcting growing problems, etc. than the farmer can spend for an entire field of crops. IMO gardeners produce healthier vegetables than farmers because they don't spray everything with toxic pesticides & herbicides. Just an added bonus to growing your own food.
@bluemoondiadochi I have a balcony and I garden too. Tomatoes, peppers, beans, leaf lettuce, and cooking herbs can be grown in planters. Those can be shifted around for sunlight too.
Haha...the Dervaes and many others were urban farming loooooooong before Michelle Obama had anything to do with it. Right now, it's a trend. When it's not, lets see how long her garden lasts.

F@#$ the homeowners association there Nazis Everyone should do this. If the homeowners association b@#$^es I'll charge em with a flame thrower. Organic!
I think this has to do with the economy and nothing more. why would you not want to grow your own food. there is so much wasted space in california that would be perfect to start a garden. I wish canada had the type of weather that other states have. get growing. :)
The season may be short but there are crops for cold climates, wheat, barley, and potatos are a few that come to mind. I live in mountainous Colorado and That's what I'm planning for.
Michelle Obama put home vegetable gardening in the spotlight when she started an organic garden on the White House lawn (much to the chagrin of the Monsanto-types). A cool natural nursery in Austin calls these Prosperity Gardens. I think the name is perfect.
I ate some grass once that tasted like onions which I later found out a dog had peed on... That pretty much turned me off fresh grown greens for the rest of my life.
Is it still growing at 21% per year?

The Dervaes' are now suing people who use the term urban homesteading. They can walk on as far as I'm concerned.

i'm glad they have the space to farm!
i don't even have a big balcony, it's packed with stuff and in shade!
for some purposes it really is a disadvantage to live in a building in center of city.... irony is i'd love to garden and save cash.

Not sure what Michelle Obama has to do with it. Many of us have been gardening for years.
