I would imagine if there weren't laws a lot of people would carry them. Thus, you could argue that the laws do PREVENT people from carrying them, although there is a lot of "ifs" in there.
Laws may prohibit, and penalties may DISCOURAGE people from violating the law, but laws can't prevent, as in guarantee, anything will or will not happen.

@jvaish It is a pretty basic concept. 99% of people are good and wouldn't harm anyone. If they have the ability to stop that 1% of bad people it will keep that small % in line. It is a very well studied topic and the body of literature indicates that more armed people does reduce index crime. Basically it reduces the number of suitable targets and blurs the line on who is a good target. The criminals simply don't know who is safe for them to go after and who might effectivly fight back.

You never know when you'll need to protect yourself. Like a spare tire, fire extinguisher, or car insurance, you may never need a gun, but it's good to have if you do. I'm not pro-gun control, but I think there's something seriously wrong with society if people feel the need to carry guns - or other weaponry - on their person when visiting a restaurant. I live in Illinois where we aren't allowed to have any form of carry. I wonder what politicians would do if they didn't have body guards, how would they feel if a crazed man started firing on people? Would they try to reason with him using their good oratory skills? They don't know what the lives of real people are like.

Even in countries where they are outright banned they are still in the hands of criminals. Restriction, registration, denial laws only affect those who obey the law. Criminals are, by definition, law breakers. No gun law has been shown to have had any benefitial affect on the rate of violent crime. In fact there is arguable evidence that the opposite is true.
Oh I haven't given up my God given right to self defence. Far from it. I have to disagree with the "Give communities welfare and stuff to lose" idea. The highest crime rates in the US are places where social welfare has been handed out in large proportions for decades. All that has done is created a sense of entitlement in generations of people who can but won't work for anything if they can take it from someone else.
@feonor26 It might be a bit safer if no criminals had guns (you'd still have to worry about other weapons). However, it would not be possible at this point to take all guns away from all criminals.
In Illinois, it is against the law to carry a gun with you. But criminals do it anyway. So, any gang member in Chicago knows that no law-abiding citizen will have a weapon for defense on them. I just wish that good people could carry guns too.

Plus, this boils back down to the fact that a law-abiding person who does not have conditions disqualifying him/her from exercising the 2nd Amendment shouldn't be restricted from carrying so long as he/she freely chooses to assume the responsibility that goes with it.
Legislation that aims to restrict that ability is wrong, and that's the point Ms. Hupp was trying to make in spite of her experiences (or, perhaps, because of her experiences as there were lessons about defenselessness).

I would imagine if there weren't laws a lot of people would carry them. Thus, you could argue that the laws do PREVENT people from carrying them, although there is a lot of "ifs" in there.

@IAMSatisfied Prevent doesn't have the word "guarantee" anywhere in its definition. It simply means to "to keep from occurring; avert; hinder." That's it. As far as the micro-chipping, not a proper comparison. Chips are simply identification markers, while guns are...guns. As far as gun laws prohibiting people from carrying guns, there is no way to tell ahead of time what will happen if the laws were eliminated. It's a best guess scenario.

@jvaish It is a pretty basic concept. 99% of people are good and wouldn't harm anyone. If they have the ability to stop that 1% of bad people it will keep that small % in line. It is a very well studied topic and the body of literature indicates that more armed people does reduce index crime. Basically it reduces the number of suitable targets and blurs the line on who is a good target. The criminals simply don't know who is safe for them to go after and who might effectivly fight back.

You're right, there IS something wrong with society: there are bad, evil people in it. People who don't care about laws, other people, or anything but themselves. You never know when you'll need to protect yourself. Like a spare tire, fire extinguisher, or car insurance, you may never need a gun, but it's good to have if you do. But I guess it's a good idea if you do get your house broken into, make it hard for them to grab the guns before you do. Alcohol also plays a major role in violent encounters. Maybe we should have a waiting period and background checks on alcohol purchases, or ban it outright. As a teetotaller who detests alcohol, why should I care? Because I know that simply because I hate something, it doesn't give me the right to deny someone else access to it. Not bad. But you're still dancing around the original problem. It's criminals. They will always have access to guns. Even in countries where they are outright banned they are still in the hands of criminals. Restriction, registration, denial laws only affect those who obey the law. Criminals are, by definition, law breakers. No gun law has been shown to have had any benefitial affect on the rate of violent crime. In fact there is arguable evidence that the opposite is true.

In Illinois, it is against the law to carry a gun with you. But criminals do it anyway. So, any gang member in Chicago knows that no law-abiding citizen will have a weapon for defense on them. I just wish that good people could carry guns too.
