We never mix body filler on cardboard , it allows the hardner to suck it up like a sponge , use plastic cutting board .. And I would totally love to take the host out to dinner :)
Using bondo as a filler is ABSOLUTELY NOT the correct filler to use. A better filler is to use a two part epoxy and add non-scented talcum powder. Add talcum powder till is has the consistency you need (usually, like peanut butter)... do not make it too runny, otherwise you will be sanding forever! This is a much stronger filler, will not Shrink Like Bondo, and is a much more similar material to the boat material, and is a closer color than bondo as well.
@fiat5001963 "Dremel tool with a tip so I can V it out" cough cough..............WTF you have a 3/8 drill you DF. You are teaching people how to repair boats my ass. Are you going to be there to retrieve the sunken boats that fail due to your Hollywood approach to boat fixing.
So it is ok to put gel coat over bondo with no primer? I know in body work, a primer has to be applied to the bondo prior to a base coat or there will be issues. Gel coat goes straight over bondo?
damn it, I cut out some gelcoat cracks from my boat the other day, filled them and sanded them back and painted it today. I can see that every spot a have attended to is now recessed...
Do I just apply more putty and not sand as hard this time round?
Yes, you can just apply more gelcoat putty but first you must remove any paint and wipe with acetone. Use a straight edge spreader for a nice, level application.
With all due respect, many of the comments here have been of a condescending and rude nature. While it's great for people to share their opinions and experiences, there is an appropriate way to do so. We post videos to educate and to help facilitate discussions on diy projects. Criticizing people for their techniques, or how they look on camera is neither constructive nor helpful.
Everyone does things different. I feel that even if you didnt do it the orthodox way, as some of these people are obviously implying. If the end result is of exceptional quality, then how was it done "wrong"? Also, the girl is HOT!
Wow, everyone here thought this guy was a bit of an amature. I agree. Also, that girl would get some. She was seemingly added in to improve the aesthetics of the video.
Oh well then if youre responsible for helping with this you should be bummed that you let a sub par video out that makes your business look like a hack job crew
5) No he wasn't wearing eye protection, but he was wearing a Tyvek suit and gloves. Unfortunately, many people who work in the industry don't always wear all or any of the recommended safety gear.
The guy was very unprofessional and clueless. Why would you put a how to video on here and call a drill a "dremel" have the camera man coughing up a lung and not taking the proper safety precausions when using a buffing wheel?
That's in your opinion. J.T. is a professional with over 20 years of experience. You don't have to agree with his techniques, but it doesn't mean they are wrong either.

Thanks for the comment. That is exactly the point. Everyone has different techniques that they use and there is not a right or wrong.

Actually, we strongly disagree with your statement. If you don't like our video that fine, that's your opinion, but our customers do.

1) Yes, she is attractive, but she is also a very talented and important part of our video team.
2) This is our sales rep, who has over 20 years of experience in the field (before becoming a sales rep). He is neither "unprofessional" or "clueless"
3) He used "dremel" here as someone would use Kleenex for tissue. He uses a dremel we didn't have one that day.
4) This is a training session (i.e.: there were lot's of people there), that was not our videographer coughing.
