  • I didnt understand?

  • Aww this was sad!

I liked the bit when she finds her ribbon and starts crying. This was really cool.

  • This is why I am learning french

  • Beautiful

  • was anyone else afraid the man wouldn't make it as they walked off the scene?

  • @saquya3 I'm glad the creator of the film did not do that.

  • Impressive music as well!

  • i thank you for using my favorite instrument in this amazing piece of art

  • Every people have propoganda, but the French calls theirs "humane" or the "human perspective" what an arrogant joke, So existentially shallow and prefering to look at life in "follow your heart" Disney terms. Needless to say, this is done in 2008, the major PR stand off between China and France, this is politically motivated opera, not art.

  • @jacqueshauer Haha yeah, right ^^

  • @jacqueshauer ah but you are reacting to it. the best kind of art envokes a reaction. therefore, this is good art.

  • @tokyogirl345 Same thing with Justin Beiber, Jonas Brothers, Hannah Montana, Lil' Wayne, Soulja Boy and let's not forget,Twilight.

The whole idea of the word "Kitsch" has to do with reaction to stuff with bad taste, that's how it gains bad popularity.

Also let me make it clear this piece is well animated and very atmospheric, but if French audiences would look at "Triumph of Will" or even Bush era recruitment movies about "HellYeah America!" and dismiss them as propoganda, this is similar

  • @jacqueshauer This was made by students in a university, not government or network funded. If this director is trying to share his opinion of the Chinese political, social system, that doesn't mean it is not art. I think it's quite obviously mainly about individual relationships being more important then any social or communal beliefs, to the individuals involved. However its up for interpretation. Who are you to say what is art? Art that makes a statement about something is still art.

  • @Pandemonius88 I agree with the fact that the studio definitely have a right to, and this story Is about the triumph of individual relationships in a man vs Society or man vs ideology setting. But it's still politically involved "art", being made in a university does not change the fact that it gives you a deeply ingrained setting, show a moment of shock and awe, and then try to say something about it. It feels shallow, it is definitely the most political of the Gobelines animated features.

  • @Pandemonius88 I acknowledge that China has one of the most tyrannical regimes in the 60s but remember this, this feature was released in a period when France was on a big anti- China stage, being from there I can tell that it was intensely anti- Chinese in a lot of the media coverage over from 2008 - 2010, the fact that the deepest politically motivated gobelines cartoon happened around this period doesn't help it. "Triumph of Will" was also beautiful and have things to say, but justified WWII

  • @jacqueshauer It could also be argued that the director used the popular anti-Chinese French sentiment as a background for a much more personal story, and in fact was making no opinion on Chinese politics. Either way it's not like it's government funded propaganda with the sole intent of portraying a dark image of China to the French masses. This film had no effect on my opinion of China in any way, for me that was merely a setting (could have been in the French revolution). It is still art.

  • @Pandemonius88 I see your point, about art that is, I concede to that.

Still, seems all of the other gobelines pieces are less about a political setting, rather than showcasing animation and local cutural, mythological background.

  • @jacqueshauer Yes, this one certainly stands out, but it's not like their all made by the same people. It's a nice change to see a Gobelin animation with a little more depth rather then the usual light comedy and amazing technique (not that their bad!).

  • Shallow as usual per france, take something that's shocking to them and say whatever reaction they have is "huamane," try Zhang Yimou's "To Live" if you want to go deeper into the same theme,

  • jadoreeeeeee!!!!! lanimation, le son, le staging, tout est bien fait!!!! thumbs up guys !!

  • Bourgeois Buffoon.

  • omg......the cello is gorgeoussss! :DDD

  • The moral of the story, China is scary, but their food is excellent.

  • I'm so glad this has subtitles! <3

  • @freakypencils31 Happy to hear it :) We should have released it with the sub already....

  • Absolute favorite.

  • A very poignant film. There is always a high price to pay for change. Sometimes an even higher price for having an opinion or defending a belief.

  • im guessing most of the people that saw this video are kotaku readers

  • Now le Ruban is closed captionned with english subtitles. Also we added a chinese translation for the title and the synopis.

    Thanks

  • So f*cking cool!! Is there any english version somewhere?

  • @theRealArmada The english version is supposed to be uploaded soon, please check on the facebook page "le ruban"

  • The quality of the film is really good especially the shader and the lighting are awesome !!!

  • Good job!! 加油!!!

  • Traditional Animation at it's best.

    Brilliant!

  • For those who believe it is 3D, you are wrong. It is 2D. 3D was used for some camera mapping and different props. Thanks

  • wonderful

  • En un mot: magnifique!

  • this is amazing I think I got an idea of whats going on but could some one tell me just to make sure.

  • ook up Chinese History on wikipedia =/ roughly: China went Socialistic driven by Mao Zedong +mates (KPCh) one of the things following was attacking each and every intelectual that didn't fit the *plan* not only that but every person thought to be involved in kapitalism was stigmatized as a badbadbad person ; P

if you're critical its fairly similar to the US history only that there it went the other way around.. you might look up the specifics around Joseph McCarthy

  • this was heart wrenching. beautiful.

  • wow that was amazing to watch

  • Excellent comme d'hab, seul bémol : les fautes d'orthographe dans les sous-titres!!!

  • Magnifique, j'ai été émue aux larmes.

  • ): the saddest thing is how the 3d animation was rendered so well i had to keep on checking to see whether it was 2d or not. Its scary to see 3d may be able to replace 2d...

  • It's 2d, they just used a 3d program to create the depth.

  • :x isn't it already?

  • @animatedamish maybe? it totally is ...but not easily

  • Smooth animation, dudes...

  • excellent !

  • Franchement bien, un bel univers servi par une réalisation aboutie.
