  • Alright enough with disrespecting each other. Both sides fought valiantly on that island. The Japs fighting until total destruction. And the Marines who assaulted a pre constructed fortress island. Both are acts of sheer bravery, and all this mud slinging pisses on their courage. The War is over now, and both sides deserve heaps of respect.

  • @StonewallJackson26 Well said good sir.

  • @StonewallJackson26 even with all the mudslinging i laugh because were best friends with japan now so wtf are they trying to accomplish lol, they all deserve respect for there bravery

  • During the movie, I remember thinkin to myself...why are these soldiers fighting if they know they're going to die....and then this song came on....I shed so much tears at that point, the soldiers were fighting for their families back home. Truly inspirational, BEST FILM of the year!

  • For The Emporer, For Japan! BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI!

  • @TakedaKarate89 The emperor was a tyrant and the Americans should have executed him for his crimes against the people (Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Vietnames, etc.)

  • @Edohiguma agreed. Tojo got what he deserved and so should the Emperor have done

  • @Edohiguma The Emperor had almost no power, only the power to endorse actions made by his generals.

  • @Edohiguma Yeah, that totally wouldn't have caused any problems at all.

  • u know..i just wish this war didnt happen.....millions of lives died because of this...war is just cruel....but w/ all the brave things the soldiers did...in all sides..i respect them.

  • @thebigdoubleu thats what ive been wondering for a long time now, but haven't found an answer.

  • @m1grand70 this song has to have definitely come from WW II

  • @UnlivedBeck117

The year of national fundation is over than 1500 years ago. 11th Feb. 1945 is the memorial day. Do not misunderstand it, thank you.

  • very sad :(

  • but this song was edited for japane's forces in WWII or by clint eastwood ? sorry for my bad english :D

  • @martinixx93 yea thats exactly what i was thinking, was this song actually played during the battle of iwo jima in 1945 or is it just by clint eastwood and for the movie. I still don't know after much research but if anyone could answer this that be great.

  • @m1grand70 I think yes. The one that is played in the movie sounds more original then this one though. This one is a cover I guess

  • @martinixx93 This song is real Japanese song in WWII. Real song has 6 verses. This movie used 1st and last verse.

  • @macatworks Arigato gosaimasu !

  • @macatworks What was the original name of the song ? do you know if the original with the 6 verses is around? if so could you link me. Much appreciated.

  • @UnlivedBeck117

This song name is 硫黄島防備の歌(Iwo Jima boubi no uta) . It means 'Song for the Defense of Iwo Jima' in English.

This song was made public on 11th Feb.1945. It is the National Fundation Day of Japan. I have no enough English skill to transalate all verses of the song. I'm sorry.

  • @fujiwing Thanks for the info my friend Much appreciated. Feb 11 is also my birthday, thats a interesting little tidbit. And when i asked for the 6 verses i ment switching the Japanese words into english characters not english words if that makes sense. But thank you again for the information :)

  • @UnlivedBeck117

Oh, your birthday ? Interesting. I'll post all verses in Japanese. Some words are old formal style. They may be difficult to translate.

  • @UnlivedBeck117

More information. I found other versions of the lyric, but almost same. Probably It was updated in the WWII time.

  • wtf is up with soccer ball

  • If you understand the conditions of the soldiers in the battle, hearing this song( if it actually did happen ) must have meant a lot. Really beautiful song!

  • Sad and patriotic song :)

  • This song alone makes me want to fight for my country XD

  • This song is so inspiring. If raw courage is all it took to win a war then the Japanese would have conquered the world long ago.

  • 1 of most beautiful songs ive ever heard

  • I've never cried watching a movie till it got to this scene in the movie...I shed so many tears.....just hearing the kids sing...you know you're doing this for them ;)

  • damm if i were the soldier when i reach a breaking point where i don't want to die after i hear this song and know it's meaning i surelly want to die for my country

  • theeehee only one idiot didn't like this

  • What an inspiration that must`ve been

  • that's to NeonKiller187 i can understand what their saying

  • was this an actuall song of world war two

    like a remake of it???

  • @sunflip123

Yes, it was. I wasn't sure of it until I read about it in the book "Iwo Jima Recon" of the "At War" series.

  • War is a horrible thing

  • But a necessary evil

  • @idahobuckeye unfortunately

  • What your all saying might be true, probably is but you can't sit here watching youtube videos complaining War is hell, no doubt about it. But if you are not out in foriegn fields or domestically providing assistance to those giving thier lives to defend there origin countries or to aid people in protecting theres. If you are not doing anything to solve these problems then you have no right to complain, if you are fighting against then, then you already know complaining will accomplaish nothing.

  • hawkeye your right the problem in this world is politicians. when will they ever die for contry? when all our brothers and sisters are dieing for them.

"I know not with what weapons Wourld War III will be fought, but world war IV will

be fought with sticks and stone." - Albert Einstein

  • Ooh-Rah!!!

  • i agree with DBZ1253 about all nations it was just the politicians telling thm where to attack and its not the soldiers fault of any of these things they were just doing what they were told to do like a good soldier and thats following orders. its fucked up for all sides. its sad but thats the truth about things

  • yeah it is sad.

"Soldiers got to war for their countries but die for their friends"

  • Old men make wars that the young must fight.

  • @carbinecorp hehe you got that from COD4

  • everyone should read the novel 1984.

Continuous warfare it just away the Elite use to keep the majority of society under there control and allow social inequality to be acceptable. few man with too much power over there socially started WWII to keep them self in power and keep the enslavement of the poor, extermination of others. The people need to rise up. It is through true representative democracy controlled by the people is warfare absolute. No poeple wants war except those who profits.

  • @chickenfevers

Yeah, I read that book. Its frightening how similar some places in the world even today are to that.

  • Yeah, after the 911 attacks. George Bush was able to abuse his executive power and take a way some human freedoms. And that happen in the us, the country with the most individual freedom. Our modern communication has made private and human freedom very hard. It like to television in the book that can see your every move. Know the government can read your email and photo tapping. It scary stuff.

  • and jews. They want war

  • @chickenfevers w'ere reading that in my english class right now.

  • sad that this war claimed so many lives. ok the ideas of the nazis and japanese were evil. but the average soldier just wanted to be with his family. doesn't matter which side they fought on....they both endured so may hardships. this song made me cry because i feel so sad for all the soldiers who died fighting for their homelands.

  • we japanese fought to expand for more resources,we were not evil we just tried to get more land and supplies so our people could survive.

  • i know that. i'm half japanese my friend.

    somethings were not right though

the bridge on the river kwai

baatan and rape of nanjing. those were not right. but most of us fought for our families at home. i respect all soldiers for their sacrafises.

  • that is true i do belive those were wrong. i just hope for a remilitarization. (not for more war tho)

  • apologizes for so many comments =(

yeah me too but not through war. they way we are doing it now is fine =)

    nice and peaceful

  • yep ^_^ tenno heika banzai!

  • ^_^

  • @inuyasha4889 True, but it is not right to bomb Pearl Harbor though ;)

  • Goddamn it this is one of the few movie scenes where I almost cried. =(

  • Me too

  • I remeber watching this movie, This was one of the only parts I remembered. Great song.

  • thank you

  • On the waves of the Pacific, Down south from the Imperial city a small lonely islands floats. The fate of our imperial country Lies in the hands of this island, Iwo Jima. As long as we stand, We shall feel safe, As the imperial land shall forever be at peace. We shall fight with pride and honor at any price, Our proud island, Iwo Jima.
  • what about the japanese lyrics, i cant find them anywhere? anyone had any luck?

  • Eastwood was genius to put this song in the scene. The signifigance and irony of this song is both beautiful and sad

  • @eeyupp dang you know the words?

  • gah, this song makes me want to cry. :( i love it so much though...

  • This song makes me cry every time I watch the movie. After everything that happened up the point where the song is played just makes it seem like people didn't even know what was happening on Iwo Jima.

  • Love this song. :D

  • Narrow-mindedness is not a good characteristic to have.

Anyway, half of your quote there is the same thought in the U.S. If a soldier dieds in battle (fighting for the U.S.A) then we (Americans) mourn their death because we knew they did their best... So yeah. And why would it 'piss you off'? It's the perspective of the other side. I [guess] I would understand you if you were pissed because the movie saids the Japanese were right... But it doesn't.

  • [Continuation]

Plus, it's not a guilt trip song. It was made to inspire the soldiers (or else up the moral). The soldiers knew they were going to died, but any single comfort they received might of motivated them to fight harder. Because (being common sense) without some hope, or inspiration, the soldier would just quit. At the end of the war (44-45), Japanese soldiers fought for the defense of their homeland.

  • why do you have to hate japanese so much?

that's just racism...its like saying something bad about your country...now i know your gonna say: Hey FUCK YOU! RUSSIAN PIG!

all STUPID People do that...hope your not one of them...just stop hating everyone...someone believes in god someone not...would the one who believes in god kill the one who doesn't? no it's just like that...you hate he hates everyone hates...so stop hating and live peacefully...

    wonna be friends?

  • History was too harsh for all the young people in 1940's served in World War 2, regardless of whether they were Americans, Japanese, Germans or Russians. It is just too painful to think how millions of them would have died missing their family.

After all, they were all mothers' sons.

  • tenno heika BANZAI!!

  • I wonder what kind of reviews the movie got in Japan.

  • Apparently it received rather good reviews, lots of people thankful that both sides of story being told ('Flags of Our Fathers' and this). Though apparently some people thought it was mocking the whole noble death by suicide a bit too much.

Hope that answers your question :-)

    P.S. great song haha

  • Is there the same song that has the background of Explosion, and the radio sound? It sounds much more sad with it. This version however, sounds more patriotic.

  • this song makes me thank what kinds of things we used to get are forces feelings up.

  • ok dude the emperor did not want war and also the prime mister that was before Tojo did not want war also but the government used the emperor as a propaganda figure and even thought he did not make any plans for battles it was his generals who did but he did something brave and that was to finally say that his contory was surriding to the allies.

  • taiheiyo no nami no ue

nippon danji no na wo tosite

    homare mo takaki Iwo Jima

  • This song was very touching....

they are so very proud for this island and the soldiers who will serve for their country

    Banzai Japan!!!

  • But thing is its so sad because when this song was played the battle was lost, they had no food and ammo, no hope left, but these kids and people in japan still have hope and still believe the battle is being won, but its not, and it just makes you want to cry, cus those kids who sang that song and going to be deviated when they get bombed by USA from the island they had hope for and thought they where winning.

  • Ironically, when the battle for Iwo Jima was going on, Tokyo was being firebombed by the U.S. :I

  • The firebombs actually killed more people than the nukes did :\

  • Sad, sad, irony...

  • der film is leiwaund

des lied is a ua leiwaund

    the film is great

    the song is great too

  • ok i saw the movie a wialy back and i want to know did Tojo use the empier to his plan for the war or did he not? i am just asking not trying to start a big agurgment ok i just want to know ok?

  • Prime misiter Tojo & Emperor Hirohito both felt the same way about uniting asia, neither however, wanted war with the west and so when they entered war with america, tojo took over more military control to protect the mainland Japan

  • @kitten1me2 well im just looking back at the comments but now..that greedy US and other Caucasian countries are "somewhat" involved in not uniting asia just to get more money..uniting is nearly impossible. if it did unite, US and the others gonna fear that the united Asia powers will be a huge threat to them. there's a huge reason y north and south korea is not united besides that whole communist and capitalist crap...im just sayin. but i just wish all of asian will forgive what japan did tho.

  • i love it how those kids are 2 small to even know what theyre singing about and its just a war propaganda song. its just like, small little kids, remdinding the soldiers, to die for the country, and the imperial what ever, whilst maintaining a cute voice. nice song though

  • Have you the lyrics in English?

  • On the waves of the Pacific, Down south from the Imperial city a small lonely islands floats. The fate of our imperial country Lies in the hands of this island, Iwo Jima. As long as we stand, We shall feel safe, As the imperial land shall forever be at peace. We shall fight with pride and honor at any price, Our proud island, Iwo Jima. ;)
  • For the defence, freedom, liberty and freedom of the nation!!

    Armenian Peoples slogan..

    similar to the japanese

  • english lyrics

A little more than upper Teito of the Pacific Ocean wave south thousand kilometer the strategic point sulphur island which small one Kotou now floats decides the Japanese rise and fall If there is this area of us, the honor where it does the mainland cheaply and bets the name of the Japanese boy eternally and wins hardships and the [te] it keeps the high coming sulphur island

  • 人間五十年、化天のうちを比ぶれば、夢幻の如くなり

  • The war in the Pacific was horrendous, both sides committing atrocities. However, the Japanese atrocities were on a institutional level, and the government of Japan was purposely committing human experiments, rape-camps, and the horrible conditions of the POW camps. Even today the Japanese government teaches school children that we started the war and that the rape-camps, human experiments and all atrocities never existed.

  • That is a lie..

i lived in Japan for 4 years and i was never told that..

i was told what Hirohito done through that period of time was wrong.. But our puishment of destroying our country.. 2 nuclear bombs.. poisoning our land.. and taking islands like okinawa which wanted to be japanese were too much. Actually some countries like Vietnam and Cambodia liked their life better under Japanese control rather than European

  • Does anyone know if this song is an original wartime recording or if it was made for the movie?

  • made for movie

  • Their ways only seem crazy to us because they are unfamiliar, but the same can be said from their point of view.

    Love Japan!

  • This song gives me chills. (in a good way)

  • It's better to die a shattered jewel, than a intact tile....

  • Read this book: "The Rising Sun" - by John Tolland. This is the best and the "deepest" book about pacific war and Japanese philosophy. Than you will understand everything and all their "crazy" acts will become familiar and acceptable to you. I like Japan very much.

  • you know, the modern japanese people will even say the acts were crazy. i'll admit it seems cool and all that they believed in honor, and had all that awesome looking culture. their philosophies seemed badass. however, it was one of the most destructive philosophies they adopted. millions of people are dead on account of that. to me, that is crazy.

you know, the nazis were just as bad and they believed in nationalism, honor, and dying for their country. should i like them too?

  • i liked that song im from japan and im ready to serve and protect or die for my beloved country!!!
