Grace Bumbry is the most convincing Carmen in voice and acttion that I have seen. Except for the meticulous hair style. That must be Von Karajan's doing. He's the perfectionist, and that isn't what Carmen is about
The only fault I can find with this performance is the appearance of the cast, they look too perfect, especially the hair styles, today we are used more down to earth appearances. Having said that, we also get freaky productions by pea brained arty-farty producers who are more concerned about their inflated egos than the composer's intentions. Of course the singing, conducting, orchesral performance here is on a level which is almost unattainable these days - thanks for posting this.
@TheVaughan5 i could not find any information about this performance, but i dare to date it beginning-middle of the 1970 (because of hair styling and rather short skirts),
@flaminia5 Yes I think your dates are right going by how Karajan looks, also Grace Bumbry. I saw her at Covent Garden around 1974 I think, and she looked very much, age wise, as she does in this film
@flaminia5 Yes, but strangely enough not conducting! I was fortunate to be invited to the premiere of the film he made of "Otello" (again mid 70's) with Jon Vickers and Mirella Freni and he was in the audience that night. I remember being surprised at how short he was.
Non ci saranno mai più produzioni di questo livello a Salisburgo o in qualsiasi altro posto. Semplicemente perchè non ci sarà più un Karajan. Anche costretto a qualche (piccolo) compromesso nella scelta delle voci, anche laddove è forse ravvisabile qualche infinitesimo infortunio (non è il caso di questa produzione) l'esito è semplicemente sublime! Congratulazioni! Il valore formativo di questi caricamenti è immenso.
