  • Psalm 130 (partial translation):

Out of the depths I cry to you, LORD; Lord, hear my voice.

Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy. If you, LORD, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness, so that we can, with reverence, serve you. I wait for the LORD, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope. I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning.

  • Beautiful indeed. If I weren't a convinced Atheist, I would consider changing sides.

  • what kind of music is this called, and where can I find it.

Where can I find similar stuff with "holy" voices

  • @mattew2221 Try "Holy minimalism, mystic minimalism, spiritual minimalism, or sacred minimalism"

  • @Max0Inq: Pärt himself calls it Tintinnabuli style.

  • @mattew2221 It's called Mystic or Holy Minimalism. Part and Henryck Gorecki write in a style similar to the music written for the Catholic church during the renaissance and pre-renaissance eras. If you want "holy" voices, look up William Byrd, Benjamin Britten, and Thomas Tallis to get you started.

  • I got shivers while listening to this, the song is so intense!

  • This is kinda sick... anybody knows what the poem means?

  • @Sawyervilleman It's one of the Penitential Psalms. If you're a fan of Renaissance music you have likely heard it, since almost anyone of note at that time set it musically. Do a search on Psalm 130 and you'll get a translation.

  • @JGS007 Thank you very much! I'll check it for sure!

  • i feel as if i have went tho haven and hell and then back to earth...i am sad that it has to end.............wonderful pure bliss...............

  • Most beautiful poem in Latin.

  • Arvo knows how to touch people's bells

  • What's this recording? This is by far the best I have ever heard...

  • keta

  • the best one

  • So very dark, so very powerful

  • if there is anything that can give sense to our being here, it's Pärt's music... well, and a very few others in music, arts, literature - but very few...

  • I'm literally paralyzed listening to this. I have a hard time just typing this comment.

  • Dialogue between sky and earth. contra tenor - bass

  • Arvo knows how to touch people's souls

  • mmm dark and rich, i likes.

  • The music goes under my skin! Breathtaking beautiful the sincerity and devotion of the voices. Thank you from my heart dear Arvo. Ingrid

  • The music goes under my skin! Breathtaking beautiful the sincerity and devotion of the voices. Thank you from my heart dear Arvo. Ingrid

  • love it.

  • Humble and profound. Be like this music and you'll be a good man.

  • The bass is amazing!

  • One of the best of Part !!!

Thank you a lot for sharing

  • even after it's finished, it's like I can still hear the voices and his music in the silence, echoing in my ears

  • Lovely Pärt !!!!!

  • Who's interpretation is this?

  • @soylalilalilalula

    It's the HillIard Ensemble.

  • Exquisite! Truly profound composition.

  • Good God the Bass and Tenor soloists are absolutely amazing; the Tenor's range is just a bit above mine; too bad :P

  • The slight out of tune-ness of the beginning almost adds something to it. But it also takes something away.

  • I find that Part's brilliance is inseparable from his Inspiration, whether we "agree" with it or not. There is not one without the other. How we explain Divine experience is another matter, however.

  • I know this music from the movie Dead Man's Shoes ..

  • @Cheakn - A terrific film, very powerful...

  • @Cheakn Ditto that. =]

  • Masterpiece !

  • Arvo Part describes his experience through music. He is expressing the Radiance of Divinity as he is able. Words cannot describe the ineffable, but music is a better vehicle of expression. Religion is simply a facsimile, telling of perception of the formless Divinity. Not until one has surrendered to Divinity, and begins to experience that Presence within, does religion have meaning. Then the Essence of Divinity is known. Until surrender, the paradox remains, as does the vacuum within.

  • Is this a psalm from the Holy Bible? If so, can anyone tell me which one?

  • @RealEros1 Pslam 130

  • @Anarchemitis Thank you :)

  • Too fast version.. annoys me that the only "slow" version is rare to find.

  • Oh, thank you Arvo Pärt! Did he compose this when he was in Germany?

    Greetings from there!

  • profound!

  • some of the sounds are very oppressive, then irritating....some quite lovely, but on the whole...well, I guess I have to listen to a few more as the first one I heard was Cantus, and this is the second one...I am not impressed, absolutely no joy here....when communing with God, there is joy and a deep sense of peace....not in either of these pieces

  • @noblumoon I think you might not have the full context here. The voice is in deep anguish, as if though it was in "the depths", a soul pleading for the redemption and mercy of God. From what I understand, it is to be sung for the departed souls of the faithful suffering in purgatory, still waiting before they can be in God's presence.

Besides who else can you repent to without fearing retribution? Joy and peace are easy enough to find without needing God, but redemption is a wonderful gift.

  • @Kaidelong thank you, that makes sense, and listening to it again, I find it more peaceful,,,I must admit, I often have to listen to some music 3 or 4 times before I appreciate it....

  • maybe you should think different and not see this music as a part of a religious tradition. These are sounds that are in every religion. Music that will go to the deepest of your soul..if you let it.....

and if they call that religion..that's oke with me...but for me..it is only msic that I allow to travel through my soul..the best way to enjoy this

  • The "tintinnabular" section at 1:32 is simply fantastic.

  • There are other dimensions that Arvo Paert's music enters and for a moment we are lifted out of our reality.

  • is this inspired or related in any to Oscar Wilde's De profundis?

  • @vautrinlarose no, but if you look for Frederic Rzewski's "De Profundis" you will hear Oscar Wilde's words actually used.

  • delicious

  • wow this is amazing!! i love listening to music like this all the time:)

  • wow upside down is mom

    WOW

    MOM

fuck comes from the word to hit or to punch.

  • @MaBu888 oedipussy dealing with S*word*S :- ice like p(l)aying wishbone c/ash fire...

  • Having= have a wing. Imagination=I magi nation. I am a nation of magicians.

  • @MaBu888

So, U R a Youniverse. Younifier is uni-fire is you need fire (cosmic fire from godsource feedline connection not accessible by dogmas such as atheisms and religions).

  • Hello citizens of Terra. If you want to be more than human, be who you really are under all that CON-diss-you-ning. Be Imagination = I magi nation (nation of magicians), be fundamental-understanding-having (fund-a-ment-all), be SPACE AND TIME (IS BACKWARDS - EMIT DNA ECAPS - FROM GODSOURCE). Be incarnation - in car nation. ACCIDENTS DON'T EXIST.

  • This is just beyong my humble humaness.

There's just no words, we haven't created them, and won't. This is just too deep to be described.

  • @EverythingThatRises

I will silence your pity by creating a word. Tunnikkunu.

  • The real paradox is that people think they can "feel strongly" about sacred music without having respect for the religion it comes from. The vacant musical pinings of the jaded atheist pale in comparison to the full, flesh and blood understanding of someone who deeply connects to the prayer of psalm 130 in the most religious sense.

  • @elephantman2222

    You're an idiot.

  • when I was 7 I realised that there was no Santa Claus. Christmas was never the same for me after that. As an aethiest I feel the same way about religiously themed music. Something like this is sublimely beautiful. I might not agree with Part's inspiration, but the result is undeniably brilliant !.

  • @praxylite I know, bloody paradoxical in some way, aint it?

  • what recording is this

  • Who is performing this?

    (I find it perfect)

  • GOD is sometimes talking to us.

Just let's try to undestand His Language (sometime different with evolution) :. )))) Maestro

  • Beautiful!

    :)

  • Sublime: altissima spiritualità! Una vera elevazione dello spirito!

Grazie Arvo Part; grazie per il post!

  • @ AnEnemy100 Well said, i have the same. let's try to see it as the good side of religion ;-)

  • Well said "AnEnemy100" same here.

  • Im unfortunetly not sutch a fan of his work although i enjoy elements of the work, i'd listen to it on youtube but not my itunes. This guy is composing in 2 weeks time were i live at 20 euoro a ticket, would it be a shame not to see him prefourm??

  • The eye of God, or is it maybe God Himself in music, or in a single note? Or is it simply man? Or is it both, in One? Or is it nothing?

I feel my image of the world is getting distorted every time I try to resolve the mystery of perception and understanding. Until I am able to comprehend the entire world within its infinite, tiny, beautiful things, my soul will not rest.

And until then I can only let it float on the wings of this distant prayer.

  • @AntonioQuijano And you're an unmeritedly condescending dumb-ass. Here's a "trick question" for you (lol): Do you always pull the "misdirection" card when in CYA mode?? Appoint yourself town dipshit if you like (no objection here). But as to the Truth of religion vs. AntonioQuijano's reductionism and ignorance? NO CONTEST, you lose, chump. Go piss on someone else's leg. Better yet, dialogue with a good, holy priest - and let the adults discuss these and related topics. Via con Dios, junior.

  • super ! LOve Pärt Arvo:D

  • @AntonioQuijano You mean like you fell into yours? lol. Don't waste my time.

  • @AntonioQuijano So you're the arbiter of truth, huh? Don't make me laugh.

  • To me,the essence of any creativity comes from the energy all around and within us.It does not matter what form the creativity takes.I have always felt the more open minded we become to the energies given out by the natural elements around us the more creative we can become,we almost become a conductor allowing ideas to become reality. I am not a religious person,I just try to except and enjoy every moment I am given and understand that we are so so fragile.

  • This is a better record that the others De profundis I have listened in youtube... Thanks a lot!

  • does anybody know who made this wonderful photo?

  • what a beautifull photograph, no pretension just a little symbolism, very peacefull as mr partt must be

  • @dengie75 When Gods work is being worked through someone, you often see the opposite of what they struggle with.

  • are people serious. if music were taken as seriously as a religion, people would argue about it anyway.

  • anyone who lets himself be photographed in such a ridiculously pretentious way must be taking himself much too seriously! try schnittke for substance!

  • @grandepittore Pärt's style of writing is called tintinabulism - the ringing of one bell is a beautiful thing. Read Paul Hiilier's book on Mr. Pärt to see the why this photo matters to knowledgeable aficionado's of Pärt's music.

    Terry

  • @grandepittore I can only assume you have never seen Part interviewed. From what I've seen, a less pretentious person would be hard to imagine!

  • this is sorrow incarnet

  • mega existencional music.essencional, fundamental, substancional spiritual

    essence of the universe

  • This is the best version.

  • BEST THING I EVER HEAR IN MY LIFE.

  • tin tin

  • A paradox. This music for which I feel the strongest affinity is often inspired by religion, for which I feel nothing. I worship this idol happily.

  • @AnEnemy100

That is why They compose music and You just listen:)

  • @AnEnemy100 Amen to that!

  • @AnEnemy100

Clear. Music expresses the living inner feeling. And touches us inside if it succeeds.

Religion is the structure that has been erected to capture something inner. The rules etc remain, the living feeling has left long ago. A mere nothing remains.

  • @AnEnemy100 i guess that makes you the paradox. i love philosophy :D

  • @AnEnemy100 Yes, especially when religion is presented in a gothic and mystic light like here.

  • @AnEnemy100

i always felt like the complete atheist. it seems the older i get the less apart the two are.

  • @AnEnemy100 Yes, that is very common. Happens to me too.

  • @AnEnemy100

    You're partially right :)

As wikipedia explains: a regilion is set of beliefs

The music you're talking about is inspired by a relation, not a set of beliefs - and that's a great difference

  • @AnEnemy100 read A confession and then What I believe by Tolstoi.

  • @AnEnemy100 I know that all too well :)

  • @AnEnemy100

ever amuse the idea that you confuse the source that the music is evoking with organized religion(s)?

  • The reason is religion has no life but relationship with God brings great satisfaction.

  • The reason is religion has no life but relationship with God brings great satisfaction.

  • I am in the complet same situation and salute you too

  • @AnEnemy100 I am sorry to tell but this music is not inspired by religion itself, but by a strongly feeling of God´s nearness , which by my point of view is quite different. Good day.

  • @AnEnemy100 best comment ever.

  • @AnEnemy100 Desiderium gratiae initium gratiae est.....

  • @AnEnemy100 Maybe there's a reason you're drawn to religious music. Many people observe religious art with the point left out. Without an artist's Biblical worldview, you would not be able to enjoy much of the art in the world (since much of it is Christian). So when you enjoy the benefits great art, try and get at its meaning. You may have a revelation.

  • @ryandtrimble I have no religion since late teens and it doesn't stop me from enjoying Art. It has no boundaries for the spirit's urge for knowledge.

  • @ryandtrimble I don't think the religion itself is important, I think it's more that the notion of something perfect, no matter what it is, is beneficial to creating beautiful art. Religious art often creates the same feeling of perfection and awe regardless of the religion.

  • Fidau!!!!

  • is that david james?

  • Perfecto

  • Beautiful.

  • Arvo Pärt... everytime I listen to his music I get in a state of... I don't know how to explain it, I feel that my existence is questionable,it is amazing how the language of music can express something so deep,so real. I believe that music can solve %90 of humans problems, because as we all know, to solve a problem, the first thing we need is to understand the source of it.Music is a language that can't be translated,it's impossible, yet it is the language of the universe. Thanks for sharing this

  • like listening to Sunn O)))

  • you have an excellent taste :D

  • @JalalSela..... like the music takes a hold of your soul.... cleanses it from the bottom and fills it with pure energy.... his music is so powerful and strong, even though on the score there is nothing really there. It feels as though your soul is reaching out and..... how else to explain it? like you said, cant be translated........

  • @Songy23 yet,I wonder why we humans never learn, although, the mere fact that we can reach to such a level of spirituality "pureness", means that there is hope still in us humans, also some hope for some of us, I really think that music could and should be a our "Message Carrier", why do we need languages for anyway? (sorry about the bad English)

  • @JalalSela F Great words kind feel the same.

  • glorious!

  • De profundi clamavi at de domine.

  • grandioso!

  • alluncinamente magnifico..

  • love it. thanks for posting

  • Thank You int13h for this haunting piece. I listen to it a lot. Like many people I first heard it in Dead Man's Shoes. God Bless you and yours

  • I can see depth.

  • Beautiful, thank you int13h

  • You're welcome.

  • daoldstyler, you are a fool with your comment. How dare you, with your personal attack. Art is in the eye and ear of the beholder. Try being civil.

  • Like a lot of people who were not familiar with Arvo Part, I first heared this piece in the film 'Dead Man's Shoes'. It took me a while to find out who it was by, but I'm so glad I went hunting for it. Minimalist or overhyped crap, call it what you want, I am just in love with his music. Thanks Shane Meadows for introducing me to a great artist, as well as the many others I have found through your films.

  • Could have written some seriously beautiful harmonies into this music, but would that have defeated the object of him being minimalist?

  • I know what you mean i've been humming little harmonies whilst listening.

  • @Kimberleg Are you completely deaf?

  • grande

  • part of the music score of the film "dead man shoes"

  • jesus christ :O incredible.

  • hi! I'm francisco from argentina, i love this composition, does anyone have the Sheet music or know someone who does???

  • all of arvo part's music is published in germany by Universal Edition, and you can buy it on their website. worldwide shipping is €16 though which is twice the price of the sheet music!

  • There's lots in Estonian libraries and probably in bigger cities in Europe as well, I would imagine.

  • incredible

  • I love you.... <33 I always will..
