The problem is not eating meat and fat, its is *overconsumption* of meat and fat. Eat meat in the amounts a typical Asian would. Veganism is an overreaction and I believe is driven more by emotion and religion than logic and common sense. The Okinawans are a perfect example.
@fntime : Its a religion. The more exclusionary their diet, the more hardship they impose on themselves the more pleasure they seem to derive from it. Actually, that's masochism. The foods we evolved with are the foods best suited to our species. Neolithic and Industrial foods certainly are not. Emotion and empathy have nothing to do with whats best for the human species. Don't get me wrong! I deplore the way factory farms treat their animals. I buy locally and factory farms don't exist here.
@fntime : You can survive on a vegan diet but it is far from optimal. There is a reason that there have been no (and I mean NONE) vegan populations. All healthy, long-lived populations consume animal foods in varying degrees. I would touch soy if you paid me. Asian consumption is overstated plus they like fermented products. That's a topic for another time. I have no problem with people being vegans. My issue is with people falsely stating that it is the ideal diet for humans.
@auggiedoggy Of course it's the ideal diet for a human since we;re HERBIVORES. "All healthy, long-lived populations consume animal foods in varying degrees. " Healthy? Health is 50% chance for heart attack?? IN what sense? The societies that consume more meat have worse health and higher mortality rates.
Ah, its the vegan diet that explains the Adventists coming out on top in that slide! Perhaps you also ought to mention that Adventists don't smoke or drink and are known to follow a physically active lifestyle. Also, being spiritual has been associated to less stress. But all you talk about is the vegan diet. Some Adventists are vegetarian, some are not. If you applied these same factors to a population following a healthy, well balanced omnivorous diet you see the same results.
@fntime : There have been cannibalistic tribes discovered in the past so it isn't an unheard of concept amongst humans. It isn't out of the question that this behaviour existed during our evolution. We have come to the point in our history that we just don't do those things and there are laws against killing people. In extreme circumstances people have survived on dead human carcasses. That said, animals have been an important mainstay in the human diet for more than 2 million years.
THANKS

@auggiedoggy It has nothing to do with religion, but rather the emotion,
empathy.I doubt if you had to slaughter the creatures that you eat,
you might think differently. What's logical about eating meat, when you can
get all of the amino acids you need, without cruelly killing, so that you
can have an exciting diet.
Plus eating meat isn't efficient. The amount of grain necessary to
raise animals for slaughter, could be used to feed starving people.
Open your mind, you'll be a better person.

@auggiedoggy I not disapproving of you.I ate meat & enjoyed it until
36 yrs ago,I loved the taste of meat & still do,I eat soy artifical
bologna, ham & turkey. When I gave up meat, I was an atheist,
it just made sense.
Today, I have all of my hair, I'm musculated, my skin is youthful
& can function like a young man on every level.
Most people don't know I'm a vegetarian, I don't preach, I ate meat
& don't condemn others, because I'm 'further down the road'
You don't need meat!Good Luck!

@auggiedoggy I'm sorry if I'm beating this to death, but how would you feel if a
society far more advanced than ours, came back from the future, time travelers,
were like the 'advanced society' in the TIme Machine. And they were cannibals,
would it be OK to eat you or I. Higher conscientousness doesn't necessarly
give you more rights, but rather greater responsibility.
Just something to think about!
