I was at this match. In all honesty we hung on and England fluffed chances to close it out which made it all the sweeter. Prior to the conversion, an English child behind me said "he'll miss" and his father replied "that's Neil Jenkins, he doesn't miss". Made the day for me.
Oh man I remember this day, so many different emotions, and yes still have the t shirt lmao. Still hold my breath for Neil to kick lol. Such a good game.
Remember the day so well, laughed, cried it was an amazing atmosphere there....Jenks top man, always a big fan and he never got recognition he deserved in my opinion
I used to go and watch ponty play every week at the time and I just couldnt understand how some teams kickers missed cos I wernt used to it! Jenks is an absolute ledge! Knew he'd kick this!
I was living in a cottage at the time - almost threw my friend (Bonker) through the ceiling, then I relaised in a drunken euphoric haze that we also had to kick the conversion to win. Step up, the Ginger Monster... and the rest is history.
I was there watching this game, just before the lineout clive woodward was being rude and arrogant to the stewards asking where england go to pick up the trophy because the game was at wembly!! then just after he was rude gibbsy crashed over!!
I was at the game, as an England fan. Didn't like the football type booing behavior from the other english fans that day, it got the football crowd in as the game was at Webmley, not twickers.
@dimmu123322 agreed! he would've had more points to his name if he had been playing the amount of test games international sides play today, and if we had a better overall side them days, he would've had even more attempts at goal.
I remember this game, Neil Jenkins drop goaled our chances (england) of winning the 5 nations. I was 11, eating toast and cried when this happened. The other was when Janni De Beer did the same in the WC Quarter. :(
I do however have to say England threw the game away by not trying to kick a fairly straight forward penalty 1 minute from time which would have given England a 9 point lead !!!! Crap captaincy from England (again)
I remember that moment like it was yesterday.I was at my mates house decorating with the TV on and a slab of Carling and paint tins to sit on.What an amazing try and moment to remember..
Make the hairs stand up on the back of my neck! This was the first time I can ever remember Gibbsy side stepping and to do it twice in one run! Little wonder the English defence were caught out, the must have expected the classic Gibbs bulldozer, ha haaa! What a great day to be Welsh. I nearly fell out of my window jumping around. Remeber the Craig Quinell charge on I think it was Steve Hanson in the same game. Happy days!

1 of the best days of my life and probably the best win we ever had agains england against all the odds the hare and the tortoise story lol fairytale stuff init
The arrogance of the English never fails to amaze me. I work in Leisurewear and competed for a tender from RFU for 12,000 Customised Grand Slam Ties. The order was placed with a Scottish firm - Maddocks & Dick. The arrogant twats placed this order a Week before the 2000 Calcuuta cup which as far the Lords of the Manor was concerned was won already. Then the Jocks turned them Over. Twickenhan paid Maddocks & Dick to destroy all woven cloth with a cheque for £ 25,000 . Scotland 2 - Toffs 0 Oh Dear
@cheyanqui he was called that. i sed the same thing a few months ago and fattwa1 felt the need to tell me gibbs was a centre too. im so glad he informed of his position otherwise i wouldnt have known!! ....not
Graham Henry said a little prayer to St David (he particularly liked St David's in Pembrokeshire), "now, St David". And lo and behold, the English defence parted like the red sea for Moses. And great was the rejoicing in Wales and Scotland alike- and in other corners of the world too where skill and exciting Rugby and underdog's spirit is preferred to the grind and bore of the arrogant who count their chickens- and on their own country's hallowed turf too
just watched this for the first time since that most famous of wins for us, england had us on the rack jenks kept our score ticking slowly behind england nice, it is the hare and the tortois story but just better cos england should have won again but did not haaaaaaa, i am filling up watching it lol, after that game i got really pissed and didnt go home after the game as promised rofl
Easily my favourite try of all time: it allowed Scotland to win the Five Nations. Fair enough, if I remember rightly we should have already done it but Kenny Logan's boot failed us at Twickenham.
It was all the better because Jeremy Guscott had written Wales off at half time - they were 20 points or so down - but Wales came back and made sure that England bottled the Slam for the first of three consecutive years.
Cryptoyourisan: i was just watching a video here of Scotland beating England for the grand slam in 1990- a result that made me glad too. I can imagine this one went down very well in Scotland.
I was taking my son to his guitar lesson when this happened and had to go to the pub to see the replay. You have to remember that 1993 was the last time we beat England. Stirs the emotion every time I see it. Brings out the hiraeth.
What he means is that in 1999 (when this game was played) the last time Wales had beaten Engaland was in 1993. Funnily enough in 1999 we didn't know that Wales were going to beat Engalnd in 2005, 2007 and 2008.
Scott Gibbs lived literally 4 houses down the road from me in Broughton (Vale of Glamorgan). He was such a sweet guy, I always remember x-mas caroling at his house and he gave us £20 to bugger off because we were waking his baby up!
i remember this. i was 9. fucking brilliant, i was born in england but i'm more welsh now that anything. i'll defend it to the hilt and support it in every tournament...even against england. good lord, welsh nationalism must be rubbing off :-)
i was there too, still have my ticket stub ... sat right behind the posts where Gibbsy scored. Never hugged so many random crying welsh men in my life
Ah, such a memorable day. The day after my sister's wedding to an Englishman. We had to endure the entire day of mocking by all of his friends. It's a shame that we didn't see them after the wedding... I remember that at this point, I was sitting in a pub in Llantwit Major with my head in my hands after yet another defeat to the Saes as the pub erupted. Great day for Welsh rugby. But, of course, we have to look to the future now!
Still one of the most memorable days of my life so far. I was on an oil rig offshore Aberdeen, me, 100 Jocks and a single English Medic that had been mouthing off all day. He didn't have much to say in the evening. And that prick Eddie Butler, saying it wasn't a try because the Ref missed a penalty a few minutes previous, shut up Eddie you prick
I spent the last few minutes in the fetal position gibbering like a nutter. Simply without doubt one of the greatest tries by a welshman. And Jenks, what a legend (and a gentleman-a yes I did buy him a pint).
They did and that's why it was even sweeter as England would have had the grand slam I think? There was an online poll to re-name the bridge up to the gates of Wembley - I tried to get it renamed Scott Gibbs Way. Hahaha!!
England would have won the grandslam and 5nations, had they won this match. Yes.
And they didn't win a 6nations grandslam till 2003. In 2000 they were beaten Scotland, in the last match of the tournument that season, when the scots had been beaten by everyone else, which made that very sweet.
In 2001 they were beaten by the Irish, loosing yet another gradslam and that was also the last match of the tournoment.
In 2002 the French won the title and gradslam I think, but I'm not sure on that
Still makes the hairs stand up on my neck, welsh rugby will always be great, home of rugby and home of the most passionate players on earth, Wales will be back on top soon
Im from the town of Rugby. You should visit the birthplace of the sport you love so much im sure you'd like it. Oh yeah and "this will show tonight".? You couldn't have been more wrong :D
Sooooo good. Seemed sll the better cos of the fact that i was deep in the enemies territory on tour, we were dancing in the streets of Grave's End that nite

It's amazing how much tackling technique has improved since then..... five missed tackles there, disgrace.
The penalty shouldn't have been given though, there was nothing wrong with Rodber's tackle..... but that doesn't excuse England.
Jenkins was awesome, I'd have put my house on him kicking it but even so..... was a huge kick with only a minute or so left.

But, of course, we have to look to the future now!

i completely agree.
who was it that said "he was practically flying when he scored that try"?

I can't remember - was it Jonathan Davies?
MatthewR1980 4 years ago 2
HA HA HA
I will never forget that day
England were going for the grand slam and we were crap all season and written off long before the game started (a bit like last season)
But we stopped england and ruined their day....
But it made mine !

You bought him a pint .... you lucky man :)

Rugby is the birth of the sport, whereas the most rugby-mad countries are wales, new zealand and south africa

Did Scotland win the 5 Nations as a consequence of Wales' victory over England/Scott Gibbs' try and the conversion? And was it at Wembley?!!!!
DIMBOD2 4 years ago
yes and yes
gazowski 4 years ago
They did and that's why it was even sweeter as England would have had the grand slam I think? There was an online poll to re-name the bridge up to the gates of Wembley - I tried to get it renamed Scott Gibbs Way. Hahaha!!
MatthewR1980 4 years ago
England would have won the grandslam and 5nations, had they won this match. Yes.
And they didn't win a 6nations grandslam till 2003. In 2000 they were beaten Scotland, in the last match of the tournument that season, when the scots had been beaten by everyone else, which made that very sweet.
In 2001 they were beaten by the Irish, loosing yet another gradslam and that was also the last match of the tournoment.
In 2002 the French won the title and gradslam I think, but I'm not sure on that
