  • you can use the hands.

  • Boring

  • hey neil, Is it the same table as is used in professional matches because they seem to get huge backspin with little effort.is there a difference in cloth or table bed or is it just about their talent and if its not then could u show me a screw shot from baulk line back to baulk cushion after potting a long red?

  • Like if you think that the guy from snooker tips that he keeps slagging off beat him in a match quite recently.....

  • Great way on how to briefly explain the screw shot. Thanks Neil

  • This is the best example on how to do a screw back.

    Thankyou

  • This is the best video on a screw back.

    Thankyou.

  • brilliant video it really helped with my screwback but i still struggle to bring the cue back as far as you do at the end of the video. Also does your cue tip affect your screwback?

  • I used to struggle with spins since my cue action would be similar to a stun shot. The real trick here is good follow-through of the cue for any kind of spin - back or top or side. Avoid "stunning" the cue ball at 6'O clock.

He mentioned it many time in the tutorial, though mention explicitly

  • when the cue ball and object ball are very far away from each other i can't screw, what can i do for doing this deep screw back shot???

  • @Boer147 try longer follow through of cue with added power.

  • very good tutorial. thanks pal.. :)

  • hello sir thanks for uploding.. please tell me how to gain power in shorts.. like Neil Robitson.. i plays so slow so my screw shot not actually works..

  • you put the cue tip very low to the cue ball..i do the same and the cue ball jumps..

  • @PIONNERPAKAS its most important that you keep very still and also relax on the shot ........keep the cue action as smooth as possible and most of all hit through the cue ball

  • @neilmaxman thank you!! and something else.. the snooker balls its the same with the English pool? (with the reds and yellows and the 8ball)

  • @PIONNERPAKAS not that low. You have to get the balance right.

  • @SimpVeggie also make sure you have enough chalk.

  • i read a thread about billiard technique,it;s about cue ball control exactly.and one thing i read was about back spin or screw shot.they explained to me,to screw back cue ball i had to do a good follow-through stroke, not follow through (top spin).they didnt explained whit videos so i was just gueesing that follow-through shot is just like you "push" the cue ball is that correct?please reply.im nebie.

  • @12390271 well thanks for watching

  • @12390271 then why the FUCK would you watch a skrew shot tutorial. are you mentally retarded?

  • Very good tutorial. Excellent!!! Keep up the good work my friend.

  • i'm just not comfortable putting my bridge low for a back screw....

  • A great way to practice this would be to put the rest on the table and cue ball ahead. Every time you hit the cue ball it will ensure that you strike it at the right place and don't bring your cue up.

  • @Quickfireflame great comment .........not sure you'll be able to see though ........but it really is a good idea

  • @Quickfireflame sorry but could you explain that to me because i dont really know what you mean (im an idiot when it comes to reading instructions :P)

  • get a new cam and mic dude..nice tips. cleared up many things. thanks

  • great

  • dude u hit at the bottom and the all didn't jump...hw does that happen

  • @MrController12345

To create back-spin with no side, it's crucial to hit the Cue Ball perfectly inline with the "verticle centre". (Imagine a line drawn from top to bottom of the Cue Ball)

I think Neil, the coach in the video, lines up to this "imaginary line" by aiming at the point where the Cue Ball is touching the cloth when he is doing his practice strokes. Then when pushing forwards to take the actual shot, raises his tip slightly, to not jump the cue ball.

    Look closely at 7:40

  • im doing as u say but the ball just stays at the same position as the object ball was

  • when i first started this was the first shot i was ever taught other than the obvious potting the ball and hitting the center. How my coach taught me to do it was put the cue ball in line with the blue ball and just screw it back into the poctet potting both the blue and white ball. That was wen i was 6 i am now 14 and been practicing every day 3 to 4 hours a day and now i have made 6 maximums and it all started with this shot :):):)

  • i struggle screwing the white on a snooker table but on a pool table i can screw 3 lengths of the table how mad is that =P

  • thank yew for ur kindness to make time for these videos, we really appreciate ur work..!! thanks again

  • hey there great tut is there any diffrence beetween elkmaster and blue diamond tips thanks

  • @xboxlivegstar11 not a great deal of difference .........the diamond maybe a little softer ........but the elkmaster is probably the more popular brand of that type of tip

  • Thats horse

  • @lukepalmer100 i'm getting old now ..........is horse good or bad

  • @neilmaxman horse is bad. "horse shit"

  • @stardustie i figured as much ........thank you for clearing it up

  • checked out tip 52 and being honest it confuses compared to this video :)

  • Nice table =P cloth is pretty much perfect.

  • i cant screw it at all. is it my cue, balls, table or am i just making a mistake?

  • @sevonfold You really need to concentrate on pushing through the cue ball, follow-through. Once contact has been made with the cue ball, keep the forward momentum going. The tip of the cue should finish its swing an inch or two beyond where the cue ball originally was. You are most likely stopping your cues movement as soon as you make contact with the cue ball- not a good move! Follow through is key!

    Hope that helped =S

  • @sevonfold When you try to screw the ball, a big part of it is follow through. If you jab at the ball you're not giving the ball any english and that's why the ball doesn't screw back. Also don't hit the ball too hard or you'll "stun" it and lose all your action. Also try to keep your cue level.

  • thx mate your the first snooker coaching video i get the screw shot, in a snooker hall i hav screwed it back but with loads of power and mainly miss the shot, but its great to no u dont need to hit it that hard to get the spin on the cue ball. thx mate

  • @jimmydooney1 thanks jimmy ........maybe check out pro tips 52 aswell

  • I need some help - when i hit the white ball and hit the colour it just stops - plz tell me what im doing wrong and how i can prove it

  • @TheGrimReeper1000 Either it's too far away, you don't apply the spin low enough, or the shot is too weak.

  • Thank you Great Video

  • مشكورررررررررررررررررررررررر

  • When you finally pot the yellow into the corner your cue lifts off your thumb a couple of inches, is this necessary to get the deep screw? Cheers

  • mate get a new cam!!!

  • Hi Neil, thank you very much again for these wonderful videos. I have a question however, are you supposed to lift your cue up or stay down after hitting the cue ball?

    Thank you

  • wont you rip the felt if its too low? by the way great videos. helps me a lot. Thank you

  • thanks from your new fan in Los Angeles. Can u believe we only have 53 tables in all of California with a population of 37 million people! I lucked out and live near and am now a member of the Embassy Billards Club in San Gaberial. They host the national championships and they have 14(very nice) of the 53 tables mentioned. Anyways No more 8 ball for me. Thanks for all the tips, please keep them coming. Cheers from Ziggyman in L.A.

  • congratulations on having 46562 hits on your excellent clips/lessons . really appreciate my improved understanding of the cue action . cheers from john rogers

  • @MrRogersjon thank you very much john

  • rip jimmy white

  • Should the cue be completely parallel to the table or should it has an angel while playing the shot right at 6 o'clock on the cueball?

  • alex higgins was great at the very deep screw shot,i love the deep screw shot when the white pauses for a split second before coming back.

  • Hi Neil, Geat Video as usual you are definitely the best on the internet I have seen.

My problem is screwing back when the balls are in a Straight line with the pocket, I can screw back a certain distance say about 2 feet or so, but when I am trying to pot the black off the spot and screw back to bounce off the cushion for the next red I have a problem, I am told that I sometimes drop my elbow, How do I correct this. Keep up the good work!

    Many Thanks

    Frank.

  • Are you using any right hand or left hand english?

  • @detectiveinspekta i'm using no side (english) at all and just hitting at 6 o'clock on the cueball

  • this waS FILMED IN 1952

  • @spandy234 noooooooooo it was at least 8 o'clock .........besides i'm not quite that old yet !!!!!!!!!

  • wow i greatly appreciate your efforts for explaining in detail and demonstrating it. very good effort ! do you have some positioning videos and about how to compensate for english?

  • great video neil.. thanks very much... ure accent tells me you are from stoke?? i was at uni there recently... which club you play at?? looks like the club near the police station in newcastle? Scott

  • @cryofwar3 thanks scott .....no i play at a different club to there ......glad you enjoyed the clip

  • not surprising that this is your most popular lesson. I would never practice the screw shot dead in line if you put it at an angle it encourages you to push the cue through without the cue ball hitting the cue on the follow through so i can pose on the shot. I have been told that when potting into a blind to put running side on the shot by Sidney Lee . could you do a lesson on pottig the black off its spot into a blind pocket please, your coaching is right up there with the greats Cheers J.R.

  • hi neil , i live in India , and i was looking for coaching for snooker , i was browsing through the internet , and there was one guy who claims to improve our game in one month only sundays that means 4 days , should i check him out , or ill just waste my time and money , what do u suggest , reply

  • hi neil i wanna ask abt using side on ball , i dont use it for potting balls , but some time i have to use it for safety , what should i see when i strike , the point of contact or parallel of it can u explain , thanks

  • neil could u please post a vid on timing? thx m8

  • Also, I noticed when I do get some screw, it has some sidespin also, even when pointing at the the middle bottom. So maybe this indicates I'm slightly cueing across it? Perhaps just not pushing through straight enough? I have a 2-pce Ash riley, and just changed tip to 9mm Elkmaster, and nicely shaped the tip. Still having my screw problem! Pain.

  • Thanks for the helpful video. I'm still having a serious problem with miscueing on screw shots. I notice everyone DOES strike down on it, even if only a very slight angle to the table. And this seems to make a difference; when I do a more pronounced angle down on the shot (maybe 20 degrees to the table), I'm much more likely not to miscue. But trying to be more level with table = 100% miscue for me.

  • if ur miscueing on screw shots.. try hitting the ball slightly higher to the middle, and also dont raise your cue as u hit the ball. Also helps to stay down and keep in the position u were for a few seconds after the shot as it keeps the cue ball going in the correct direction

hope i helped a little :D.. need any more tips ask me

  • Thanks scouserdan3. I was thinking maybe the chalk is the problem; I acquired SupaPro dark-blue chalk which I'm using. It always heavily marks the cue ball and almost seems a bit too grippy. I've been able to screw back on dodgy pub-pool tables with ridiculous cues over the years when I really didn't know what I was doing, and my cue action is 100 times better now - I actually know what I'm doing now (straight cueing, follow-through, timing, acceleration through the cue ball etc).

  • @alang184 ye i use triangle chalk.. its a greenish colour.. its alot softer than the blue chalk and helps alot more

  • With my screw I'm pushing through straight and following-through, and it's like the moment after the tip hits the cue ball, there's too much traction, and the contact-point between the cue ball & cue remains the same as the cue follows through, meaning the cueball has to give and it is forced into the air. (I'm pretty sure the cue ball should begin to backspin as the cue follows through, requiring some amount of slide between tip & cueball?)

  • if your miscueing alang your aiming to low just gradually aim higher on the cueball.............the chalk you're using the blue stuff is no good ..........you want to use triangle .......its a greeny colour ..........in a green and yellow wrapper neil

  • Bingo! Went to club. Used green Triangle chalk. No problem with screw shots (maybe the occasional deep screw miscue from bad cueing!). Bought some green Triangle chalk and tried it out on my half-length "basics" table at home; again, no problem screwing. It just works so nicely now. Very satisfied.

Mental note: Don't use SupaPro chalk! Put it in an incinerator and say goodbye.

  • lmao thats your sponsorship deal with supapro right up the chute.........lol

  • @alang184 yea your right it should mate.. have u tried putting the white.. inline with the blue ball and potting the blue in the middle... whilst screwing the white into the adjacent middle pocket? good way to practice it

  • Hi Neil

can i Ask you to give me youe emial address.

I'd like to send you a screen shot form your video and aks few question regarding the screw back rotation.

    thanks

    miłosz

  • i just want to say that those tips really working.:)

i am the best example :)- remeber All: hitting very low on the cueball , second: smooth cue action - and follow-through.

Neil, keep going wit the videos - great job.

  • thank you milosz

  • i followed exactly the same thing he's doing and it only moves slightly after collision, is it something to do with the cloth? (im playing in a local snooker club)

  • the cloth can play its part ............but more than likely your still not striking the cueball low enough.........start off by not striking the cue ball to hard then gradually try and build up the power.........

  • Its all timing mate, not how hard you hit it but how sweet you hit it. let your elbow do all the work...picture it like the whites an egg shell and try n go through one side n directly through the other side in a parralel line...

  • very well put pistol..........neil

  • This time without talking he says - as he carries on talking !!

  • sorry spifface i get carried away

  • brilliant clip, thanks a lot!!!

  • hmmi went snooker today tried it, and the cue ball wasnt jumpin today :P think i got that bit sorted.

but im havin trouble actually screwing back, it just seems to stun :P

is that because im not putting enouth power in?

or just not hittin it low enouth?

  • You're probably not hitting it low enough. Make sure you follow through with your cue. The more chalk you put on and the cleaner the white, the harder and lower you can hit it without it jumping.

  • it's probably a combination of not stroking through the ball and possibly hitting too high on the white.

  • you're not running through that's why.

  • @jut1128 just not following thru i think

  • i dont know what i do wrong but when ever i try this the cue ball jumps in the air :P like everytime.

ive only been playin snooker like month or 2, i dont know if its me or my cue :O

  • its you mate not meaning to be rude...when u screw back u'll have to raise the butt abit so it doesnt jump.

when you do it im guess your cue is too flat causing it to jump.

  • the reason my cues jumps is because i hold the cue in the back of my hand.......thus i have a hole a the front of my grip and if i don't squeeze on impact which sometimes i don't then cue lifts off the bridge......but when you play the screw shot you don't raise the butt because this would mean hitting down on the cueball and if you have any unwanted side on the cueball it will be greatly exaggerated...next time you watch on tv see how many pro's raise the butt to play this shot...not too many

  • ye anoyin thing is i have to pay to practice :(

so me n my mate just go down every friday, i try togo every sunday aswell.

anoying thing is i always miss massive sitters, like straight pots, but im quite good at cuttin the ball

  • thanks for vid neil. ive got to a ok standard make the odd 50 or 60 break. but been there for about 5 years. how do i push for the next step. i cant play anymore than i do. i just feel like giving up and playing pool. im 25 now and feel ive missed the train.

  • your welcome

  • dude u aint missed nothing m8 dont go down on yourself your only 25 loads of time and your making 60 breaks that is really good concentration is the key keep concentration for the whole game is important i think u aint giving yourslef enough credit some people struggle to make 1 shot ...positive thoughts

  • nice comments bognorboy

  • Excellent Stuff Neil

Whenever i hit the cue ball from the bottm it goes forward, what am i doing worng?

Also can you show us the Cannon shot?

  • you're not hitting the cueball in the right place.....sounds like you're aiming at the bottom........but on impact you may have more than likely got some body movement ......so keep it all nice and still ....good luck neil

  • what tip are you using?

  • at the moment matt i'm using a tip called talisman

  • cool, i use talismans too. what hardness do u use? i tried hard ones but i didn't like the feel, so now im using medium

  • you have a pm matt

  • stop moving the cue ball

  • excellent video neil really works, played today for the first time and was shocked at how much back spin i was getting, over screwing at times lol thanks again : )

  • not sure about the language .......but you're right about the cue lifting off the bridge good spot, one of my many faults but nobody is perfect.....as for the yellow i could have started again and made it look like it was done first time ..........i didn't plan on missing but it happens to everyone i left it in

  • You are a dickhe*d . you can't even pot a yellow from the spot.

It takes you 2 attempts & the cue comes up off your bridge hand, cr*p.

  • chill out son, id like to see you take the time to educate people with videos on your snooker knowledge........ fool!!

  • hey neil dats great quein dere .........and nice screw as well ...............i am just startin snooker .......i ws wonderin how far normally da bridge shud b ..........frm da que ball .........and also are u based in london ??? i need a snooker coach .........thankx
