I heard a mention about firing a CO2 fire extinguisher down the air intake to quell this sort of event. If it works I suppose there is no air, or not enough air to support combustion.
The real only way you can stop them when they are running on the engine oil is to let em self destruct as it is hard to choke em cause once they start clanging like that they coils suck air through the exhaust
damn, runaway engine =( we had this happen recently with a 6.6 duramax.. guy blew the turbo at our shop doing a burnout with a smartie on the ecu... he cut it off and it kept going... very sad.
That's a tough situation there boys ;( When she starts running on er own engine oil best thing to do is undo the main fuel line to the injector pump and find a way to keep er from getting air. If that doesn't work, let er go!!
they could have been smart and sprayed some c02 at the air intake and stopped the engine from gettin oxygen but no they decided to kill the old cat.........Bastards!!!
What happened there is what is known as a runaway diesel. When the turbocharger disintegrated the bearing seals were destroyed, pouring engine oil into the intake. As we all know, diesel engines run on oil, and the engine took off running on the engine oil uncontrollably. The white smoke isn't coolant, it is in fact burning engine oil.
That is why we run guilitine air shut offs. On a detroit though, when you hit the air shut off it can sometimes suck the blower seals inside out let air in through there.
The engine was running for almost 5 minutes, and they could not kill it. The whisteling sound you hear is when they put a glove into the intake of the turbo to stop the airsupply, but it was`t enogh. It was a mess with oil everywhere.
After this, we mounted a shutoff valve on the lubrication sypply to the turbocharger on our own tractorpuller!

High gear, clutch dump. Done.

The runaway diesel is like a muscle cramp - it keeps on going until it gets exhausted.
Aspro4 7 months ago
@Aspro4 How about doing as wonka109 said? Put it in gear and let go of the clutch. Maybe a little rough to get it to shut off?

No cooling water there, only running on engine oil through the destroyed Turbo.

Could you not put it in gear and stall it rather than waiting for it to run out of oil, or is it auto trans?
