  • I should look for a benchtop thread injector. How many PSI is that one? :)

  • @911operator That's the Turbo Model my friend... Running at 120 PSI and 250 Horsepower! haha ;-)

  • benchtop thread injector ....hahahahahahahahahahahahah thats awsome

  • awesome idea! I hope to improve the heat rating of some summer bags I have that just arent warm enough for my taste ^_^

  • @blackraven1515 Thanks friend! I know what ya mean... I wish I woulda known how easy this was years ago, I could have saved a couple bags instead of getting rid of them :-0

  • i appretiate your approach to the common man's bushcraft. I find that myself have far more joy out of making my own stuff than to keep on buying top end gear. i am working on my first you tube video on my own idea, hopefully before the weekend. first we need to sit out a possible snow storm tommorow night on the south island of new zealand

  • @vanrooyendavid Thanks friend! I'm going to be really looking forward to seeing your first video... how cool! Please let me know when you get it uploaded so I don't miss out on it. It's really strange to hear you saying that there will be a snow storm... it's still REALLY hot here! Take good care and have fun making your video!

  • SuuuuWeeeet boy I have been missing out on some grat vids.

  • @medicjimr Thanks Jim! I've got to get over to your channel myself... I think you've got a video up of your first trip with the new trailer that I've been wanting to see. Lookin' forward to it :-)

  • @intenseangler Not much of a video I am shy filming in front of others lol

  • Great piece of gear. Sometimes you've just got to DIY.

  • lol bench top thread injector. thats a cool job john and a nice size. and the only way to truly check the comfort rating is to take it out in the middle of winter along with a thermometer and see how long it takes you to freeze. Look forward to that video my friend lol. (not that i want you to freeze you understand, perish the thought)

  • @KittchenSink LOL! Wish I could take credit for the "thread injector" line, but that one's all wawhiker. Hmm... interesting idea on the winter sleeping bag test. Think it would still count if I was inside the down bag, inside my 20 degree bag? ;-)

Thanks for the great comment Brother. Hope all's well over your way!

  • Great work man! DIY at it's finest!!!

  • @ridebks Thanks Brother, that means alot!

  • Off theme here: would you be willing to talk about your forearm tat sometime?

  • @tahoeric No problem Brother... I'd be more than willing to talk about it. It was something I had done several years ago... it says "Bloodline". It was based on a song by one of my favorite bands. No real significance to it lol. At the time I thought it would be pretty cool (you know how that goes lol).

  • Cool. We have been talking about getting a sewing machine. It was so hard to hand sew the straps on the side of my pack for my pad. It works so good that way but the stitches are coming out now. If I'd had the machine I wouldn't have to think about it again. There are lots of small and large mods that can be done to our gear easily with it. Good tip about getting cheap down from thrift stores.

  • @Loraxtribe I know what you mean... I've spent tons of time hand sewing mods to my gear before I finally broke down and learned to use the sewing machine. I'm so glad I did! Now it's just a matter of a couple minutes, and it's done and you don't have to worry about it again. Thanks for the great comment my friend!

  • wow John, cool bag ! That turned out nice. good job.

  • @DAYWALKERTWO Thanks Todd... I really appreciate that!

  • Wow $5, that is a great job. The best part of making your stuff, if that you can make it just like you want. Like your stuff sack size.

  • @mudtoa Thanks man! I agree with you 100%! I love being able to customize my own gear... even if it's just making minor mods to stuff so that it fits your needs a little bit better.

  • BTW my friend, you are a hippy...hehe ;o) But don't cut it man!

  • @Ggreenvideos Who me?? Is it the flip-flops or the long hair? ;-) It's a good thing I left out the scenes where I was runnin' around hugging the trees... whew! Haha!

  • Great work there buddy!!! Very cool proj. He can sew too! Awesome camping scenes as well :o) Unfortunately I can't go that lite :o( The nites are too damn cool...hehe! The Peapod I use for my hammock Is just rite for me although it's rated for -7C. I have to add a lot to it in winter though. It weighs 39oz. I have Mountain Hardwear down bags rated @ -15c. They weigh 3lb 6oz. That's the best I can do. But the hammock, pod bug net, and Superfly come in around 6 pounds, which is great for me :o)

  • @Ggreenvideos Thanks Rich! I guess you could call it sewing haha! I was gonna try Duct Tape at first, but figured it'd look better sewn ;-)

Sounds like you've got your gear exactly the way you need for your country. 6 pounds for that kind of gear is amazing if you ask me Brother! I have REALLY gotta give that hammock thing a try soon! I'm not trying to get all weird about this weight stuff lol... mostly it's just a new "thing" that I'm messing around with... changin' things up a bit, ya know?

  • @intenseangler Well, I have crocs so yeah the hair...hehe! Do you play guitar? I once did when I was a long hair too ;o)

  • @Ggreenvideos Ah ha, so you were one of "us" too... I knew it! ;-0

Ok, so here's the story... I was in a band when I was younger (they wouldn't let me play guitar though because I sucked at it! lol), and so since I wrote the songs they elected me lead singer (yikes)... can you imagine that? Haha! Was some good times back then though :-)

  • @intenseangler Yes, I miss those daze :o) Some real rockin' times! I have metal in my veins :o) I sucked at leads. I played rhythem :o) I don't have a guitar anymore but planning on buying one for kicks. I'm feeling the urge again. It's been years so I know I've forgotten a lot of tunes.

  • @Ggreenvideos "Daze" is exactly right Brother! Yeah, I kinda figured you were a metalhead when I saw your first video and you had Slayer playing in the background lol. No worries, I've got that big old "bloodline" tat on my forearm :-0 That'd be cool to pick up the guitar again man... see if ya still got it eh!

  • @intenseangler Hehehehe ;o) I never did have it, just wanted to have it. I really got into the old Metallica. Kill em' all, Ride the Lightning is still my fav from them :o) I downloaded the Big 4 concert a while back. Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer, and Metallica. Megadeth and Slayer sounded so tight and awesome. Metallica sucked big time. Hetfield is a loser now...haha! Check it out on itunes bro. $17 for 5 hours :o)

  • @intenseangler I have the Grim Reaper on my upper arm ;o)

  • @intenseangler Yeah, I say that's much better than duct tape :o) Yeah I don't think I can ever make the ultralite category haha. I am in some aspects but not even close overall :o) I envy the people in the south that can go so lite :o) It ain't happenin' here brother :o) I have an 85 liter Osprey pack that can take 70lb. max...hehe! I'm too old for that weight though :o)I like winter. Easier to pull the heavy pulk sled :o)

  • you make come cool things. great work. have you actually tested it, on a cold night?

  • @PHARRAOH Thanks a bunch Alan! Yeah, I've had it out a couple of times now, not sure how cold though. This last time out I was up in the hills next to a stream and it got somewhat chilly at night... don't know what the temp was, but you could see your breath a little in the morning... seemed to do pretty good. I'm gonna bring a thermometer on the next few trips so I can try to rate it... if for nothing other than my own knowledge of how low I can go with it comfortably. Thanks again Bro!

  • Well done John - great job with the design, materials and bench top thread injection - LOL!

  • @wawhiker LOL... I'm glad you liked it buddy! It's good to see ya back around my friend :-)

  • what a great idea!!! i've got enough old bags to open my own shop. got down pillows and comforters, too. all i have to do now is convince my wife to let me convert her sewing machine into a "bench top thread injector". just what i need, another hobby...

  • @briargoatkilla Thanks Brother!... and LOL! I got lucky, mine doesn't sew! haha

  • I've got an old, fairly good polyester filled 'Marlboro' bag, that I've been toying with the idea of making into a quilt, because of it's bulk. Haven't got to it yet, but this may just insprire me. You did an excellent job on your bag. Looks great and works well. You can't go wrong there, can ya. Now I've got to go haunt the local D.I. and see if I can't find a down quilt or two. Wonderful ideas John. Thanks.

  • @rainbowhiker Thanks John! That sounds like a great project... hopefully I'll get to see the end result :-) (I do love seeing good DIY gear!). Good luck on your hunt over at the D.I., hope ya score a great deal buddy!

  • @intenseangler Hey John. I just got back from D.I. and scored a small stainless cooking pot. I just measured it out. It holds four cups of water, (three would be the practical amount for cooking), and it weighs 8.7 oz. Too much for one person, but it would be great for doubling up with someone. You gave me good carma buddy, lol. Thanks.

  • @rainbowhiker Good score buddy! I always make sure to hit the cookware isle myself whenever I go... I've gotten 3 complete sets of those cheap aluminum cook-sets (like the Boy Scouts use) for about a buck apeice from there. I love those things for the cook pots.. they're the ones I use for baking my muffins :-) Any luck on some down while you were there?

  • @intenseangler No, I didn't find a down comforter, :(. I can't recall if I've ever seen one there but there must have been. I'll keep looking. I'm pretty sure I have a couple of those same cookware items you use. They are a good size for just about any meal. The new stainless pot I found, for a dollar, is just about the same size, I think.

  • Hey Dave! Thanks for the compliment Brother! I'm glad to hear you're thinking of getting up to the lake soon. It's going to be an entirely different experience this time around I'm sure. I'm excited for ya... wish I was going! I'll see what I can think of as far as lightweight ideas. I am going to be reviewing & talking about that "super light" real soon... got a trip video to with it :-) Hopefully that will spark a few new ideas. It's amazing what we really "need". I'm gonna send you a PM now..

  • Another great video brother John! I have an old REI down bag here I got from my neighbor. I need to weigh it and see what I have but it's a big bag. I'm very interested in your "super lightweight" outfit. Need to know what your using and keep me up to date on any links you might have. I'm always looking to lighten up the load. Been thinking a lot about getting back to Mystery Lake sooner than later! Need to go light this time. Any help would be great but I've seen a lot of ideas already.

  • Wonderful video John! I always love to find new ways to re-purpose stuff from the thrift store/ goodwill stores. Makes shopping there a whole new experience.

This DIY project rocks! I was expecting more of a complete assembly instead of reusing an existing bag. It's amazing how much weight you shaved off with a little ingenuity, trimming, and by using the down. Is the hip pack new to You Tube? I'm looking forward to more... : )

  • @saradreaming Hi Sara! I know what you mean, I used to dislike 2nd hand stores for some reason.. now I love 'em! Good places to score big! Thanks for the compliments on my little project too. I almost ended up doing this from scratch, but then figured I may as well try the easy route first. I'm glad that I did... now if I make another I have a little more experience. The hip pack is new, and it will be be getting a proper showing soon :-) Hope your weeks off to a great start my good friend!

  • Great DIY tutorial! Its great to be able to make your own gear and that sleeping bag looks like it packs up nice and small when compressed. Looks nice and lightweight too. I'd like to make an underquilt for my backpacking hammock and I think your idea of getting down from down blankets is a great way. I just need to see if the ol "bench-top thread injector" will still fire up! Thanks for sharing this great DIY with us!

P.S. Nice shirt! ;) Thumbs Up Brother!

  • @CrazyTaileZ Thanks Bro! I agree, it's an awesome feeling to be out in the wild with gear that you made yourself and have to depend on (well, as long as it works anyway lol). I hope you get the "thread injector" fired up... would love to see a killer DIY project from ya, like that underquilt!

P.S. That shirt rocks huh! Thanks again Matt! I think that's my new "lucky" hiking shirt... I had an awesome trip this time. Hopefully I can get some of the footage up soon...

  • Nice video, you always put up some cool interesting stuff. Great job and how could you beat the price. Take care and have a great day.

  • @ewtoutdoors Thanks alot my friend! And yeah, the price was definitely right on this one lol.

Hope you're having a great weekend so far... Take care!

  • WOW $5, good bag and vid, question tho where do you rate the FeatherLite 20 at?

  • @ScoutsNOA I know huh! Can't beat the price on this one (there was a little labor involved though lol). The hardest part was finding the right down comforter... something that had plenty of loft and that was CLEAN.

As for the FeatherLite: It's definitely not good (by itself) down to 20! I sleep comfortably in it down to about 35. Any lower than that and a liner is a must. I tend to sleep a little on the cold side, but that's been my experience with it.

Thanks for stopping by my friend!

  • Great instructional video. I too like to try and make my own gear. Thanks for sharing...

  • @69Grunden Thanks James! It's always rewarding to make and use a piece of gear that you made yourself isn't it?

  • Very cool, I have just started an interest in super-light backpacking as well. If you are into making your own sleep systems, check out the superinsualtor Aerogel. You can buy a piece at aspen aerogel.com. The aerogel is ultralight water proof and fireproof. the price is moderate but you cannot beat the insulating properties Love the idea of taking old gear and giving them an upgrade

  • @ihikearoundcom Thank you. Very cool to hear that you are pursuing "super-light" backpacking too... we'll have to stay in touch and trade tips and lessons learned :-) Thanks for the heads up on the Aerogel, it sounds awesome...I'm heading over to check that out now! Take the best care my friend!

  • Looks like a good option John and you sure did save a lot of money.Like the short video out takes.I only wish I had more free time!!Looks like a lovely place you was in too!

    All the best

    Sandy

  • @g0vqw Thanks Sandy! Yeah, savings were a critical factor in this project, that's for sure. Don't get me wrong, I love the "good" store bought equipment... it's just fun to see if you can get by with your own ingenuity, ya know? And you're so right... the location I hiked into was GORGEOUS! I have some footage of the trip that I'm messing around with... hopefully I can get it uploaded soon! Very best regards my friend!

  • Excellent idea with the second hand down, really well thought out my friend . I'm really inspired to try something similar. Thanks heaps.

  • @phrayzar Thanks my friend... and you're very welcome! It was a pretty fun project to do, if for nothing else than just to see if it would work (and surprisingly enough, it worked perfectly). You'll have to let me know if you decide to make your own version... I'd really love to see what you come up with! Best to ya Brother!

  • nice vid

  • @PJMGvidz Thank you!

  • @intenseangler any time
