This woman is a professor of music...and has won some serious awards. I don't think she needs your advice on sustain. I admire her, like I do all concert pianists. I haven't heard her Bach yet, but that was what she won a prestigious award for.
I thought her "Heroic" was excellent. Some of you are hung up on every little mistake. I listen more to the overall performance and the mood established. I think she is one of the better pianists in the world.
Pas mal du tout, mais il manque (juste un peu) le passion et la fougue que Richter, Gavrilov ou Cziffra ont su rendre dans leurs magnifiques interprétations de cette étude de Chopin.
I think the acoustic and recording quality make this sound muddy and too fast, whereas if we could hear all the notes the way it was played it is probably hair raising.
werqf, you say she plays too fast. Others who play it slower, people complain it's too slow. lol Can't satisfy everyone. Yes, she played this exceptionally well. WOW! What a performance, eh, m8?
My text has the speed at half note = 76 which is extremely fast. The only thing I find is that when it's played at that speed you lose some of the melodic intricacies of the piece.
OK the recording is very bad, Yes she plays it really fast but is still excelent, besides Chopin wrote this studies with a purpose maybe he wanted the student to gain ability by playing the left hand very fast (in this particular study)
Dgaranin is right, she is a professional pianist! Of course she isnt over pedaling its just that the recording is low quality etc. Maybe she plays it a tiny bit faster than usual, shes probably likes it like that, its her own interpretation after all.
Just because she's a professional pianist doesn't mean she can't make mistakes or overpedal. Like I said there are also plenty of sloppy areas, wrong notes etc. Look at professional athletes. They mess up too sometimes. I don't question her ability to play. This was just a sloppy performance.
Are you serious saying that a pianist of such a level would overpedal the piece? It is just the acoustics of he hall. Look up, there is no ceiling, it is like a well.
"WAAH WAAH WAAH, ITS LIKE, .00004 seconds too fast OMG."
She plays is fine, IMO. The music is all about providing your own interpretation of the piece. If I was looking for people to replicate the original performance I would just listen to the same version over and over again. This seems to base around a rift between those of us who approach performance as an art and those who approach it as a product.
If that's the case then your essentially saying that I could go bang on the piano and call it Revolutionary Etude, and that would be correct. I'm just saying. I'd like to hear this performance with a better sound quality. It sounds drowned out by too much pedal. Not to mention, there are alot of wrong notes being played.
That's a stylistic matter. you speed up repeats to create an echoing effect. You can't do that on a Chopin etude with NO repeats. but i enjoyed this performance anyways. GREAT. it's not sloppy. Just too much pedale. On the contrary, it's precise.
I agree, its obviously a technically perfect performance but there's no way it's meant to go at that speed, Chopin put Marcato markings in the descending left hand passage for a purpose; to bring out the dischordal harmony, stressing the chord. to me this is a porr performance, the technique is there to have made it an excellent performance.
Yes, that's the way! Great delivery!

Of course, this performance is fast but not rushed. All played notes are full weight, all accents are set. It has a torrential quality.

And Martha Argerich on youtube speeds up Scarlatti and everybody is happy.

I dunno if it's the recording but.. I find it's obviously technically perfect but it really misses musicality ! It's very very cold.
Thebop3 5 years ago
Man, everybody who says she doesn't play this etude good is stupid. The speed is perfect and everything is quite extraoridnary.
thunder1909 5 years ago
she ruined this etude because of the speed. There's no contrast at all.
dawoodsta 5 years ago
That's a pity that Glenn Gould has not recorded this etude. Probably you could hear Chopin weeping in it..

thepolonaise 5 years ago 2
She has a lot of power. She is technical brilliant.
Does she can feel, what Chopin made to compose this?
This peace is full of range (against the czar, when
he occupied Poland in 1830). Full of love to his
homeland, what you should hear in the part before
the finish. It is possible to give expression and
heart to this. I could not hear Chopin weaping.
kissis4music 5 years ago

Yeah it was too fast and a little muddy with the pedal, also a bit of a lack of expression in some areas. It was ok.
