I'm a railfan and was wanting to see the train in your video not just hear it. I love trains and since my family moved to Scottsboro now i want to see the trains there. don't know if I'll ever afford to get out of KS for vacation.
Another very enjoyable and informative video from you, Richard. The whistle in the background has such a haunting effect, and the use of "live action" shots in a slideshow format was superb and effective!
Thanks Brent. Since Youtube is now providing higher quality video to those with better connections, my amateur videos are looking better. the detail is quite good. You have to go to your account settings to open up the better quality, if you haven't already done that.
I'm afraid my only pay for my videos is the enjoyment I get from making them and enjoying knowing others enjoy them also. Some local folks have taken note of the things I am doing lately, so I do have some local recognition also. I just uploaded a new video tonight that is still processing, giving a little explanation of my recent absence.
We all have missed you.Glad you are back.Hope it wasn't anything serious. Please tell us you were on vacation or something nice.SMILES!Great vid,and voice.Keep them rolling please. PEACE!
Thanks QW. Yes I also lived near the tracks while very young in the early 50's. At that time we could catch a passenger train near our house and ride into the nearby small town only a few miles away and then ride back on another train later in the day.
Not many things sound as lonesome as a train whistle in the night.
The historic association has been working on the depot and has erected a marker there. I was reading directly from the marker. Yes, it is a shame we were not taught more of our local history during our school days . . or maybe we were and just didn't listen.
seems to have already been said Richard but nice to see u back in action i was begining to wonder where u were, another interesting video nice to see some of the real west not a John Wayne or Clint Eastwood in sight. :-)
Hello Al, thanks for the nice "welcome back". I have been off more than I like to be. I've really been busy with family and work. I plan to make some videos about that to try to catch everyone up on my goings on. Yes, at one time even Alabama was the "wild frontier" There are many great stories that have never been told about this area, maybe I can tell some of them.
Richard, I enjoyed this so much! I'm a bit of a history buff myself. Please keep the great videos coming. I look forward to more of the sights and stories of Alabama.
Hi Richard nice bit of history. I bet this place is loaded with Ghosts or memory imprints from the war. Its amazing that it is such good shape considering that is over 150 years old. 5 stars!
Hi Lucy and thanks. Yes, inside the depot are still the marks made by a Confederate canon ball coming through the wall during the battle. The bricks in the building are handmade, probably by slave labor and yes they have held up well for the last century and a half.
I should explain further about the term " colored". In the days before the civil rights movement and before the preferred term became "black" using the term "colored" was a gentlemanly expression. Instead of using the awful "n" word, in civilized conversation the word "colored" was used.
"Colored Infantry" is absolutely correct. That was their official designation byt the US government at that time and his how the historic marker was written also.
Greeting Mick glad to be here and glad you enjoyed the video.
The train sound was an actual recording of a modern day train that passed the station while I was there. I just moved the sound to places i wanted it to be heard in the video.
Such a pleasure to hear from you again Richard. I regret to say that the UK also lost a great deal of its railway heritage in the rush to modernise - a lot of it little short of criminal. You might find it interesting to look at the newly renovated St Pancras station in London - it's quite stunning in how it manages to combine the best of the new while preserving the old architecture - its roof design is simply wonderful and you'll find some lovely patterns there too. Take care.
Thanks for watching and commenting. I will certainly go and look at the St Pancras station photos.
"Old" in the US is not like "old" in Europe and Asia for sure. Our "white man" culture only goes back a few hundred years here. Of course or native culture goes bas millenniums, but they left few structures as evidence of their civilizations.
its strange how although this building is so old, it somehow looks like it was built during the next century, I mean despite the renovations, good to see how history is respected, tough times worth considering !
Hello Davaron. Yes, I've not gotten to make many videos lately. Many times we underestimate how advanced things were even 150 years ago. Even though this building has been saved we've lost too many of our other old structures.
Glad to see you are still making videos. I have learned many things from your videos that I don't think I would have learned otherwise, Thank you Richard.
Thanks Owen for being a long time viewer. I hope my video making can increase soon, just been tied up otherwise as of late. I'll have to tell about it in future videos.
Hello friend Moreno. I know the feeling, my work duties and family duties are using up much of my time right now also, but I still have the desire to produce things for my subscribers and for Youtube. Lately even local people are viewing and enjoying my videos of the local area.
I live so close 2 the station I could throw a rock from my yard and hit it. O by the way they painted it

I was surprised to hear that they had units called "colored infantry". I wonder if the others were called the "white infantry" or just "infantry".
billpg 4 years ago
This commentary may be from the 1950s. It is weird to here that colored makes me think of Blue Aliens from outerspace.
Humans are all humans we just have many different heritages.
kannon9 4 years ago
Please don't try to make anything racist out of this.
"Colored Infantry" was their official designation given to the group at the time so is completely correct and not derogatory at all.
I would accept an apology if it was offered.
messabout1 4 years ago
So we should just stop using historical terms just because it makes a few people uncomfortable? I don't think so (no rudeness implied)
