  • @garyzenuf Instead of implying I'm arrogant, why not look up the definition of 'alcoholism' and the definition of 'disease', then form your own informed opinions?

Mirriam-Webster defines alcoholism this way: "a chronic disorder marked by excessive and usually compulsive drinking of alcohol leading to psychological and physical dependence or addiction."

I accepted the disease model of alcoholism for many years until I began thinking about it critically.

  • Alcoholism is not a disease. Alcoholism is a habit. It is an addiction. It is not something you contract. It is a matter of choice, and discipline.

Please stop calling it a disease. Calling it a disease is an excuse, and it is permissive, because it removes liability and responsibility from the person who is addicted.

I drink by choice. I enjoy it, but I have the discipline to limit myself and not allow it to interfere with my life. Some people need assistance. But it is not a disease.

  • @TempleOfSin it is an unexpected disease, and well done for discilpling yourself when drinking. Alcohol abuse is a mental health issue. Not a disease like cancer but it kills thousands. No one wants to be an alcoholic or have a disease.
