this song is so emotionally powerful... reminds me of driving to school with my mother. doesnt sound like a very important memory but now that my mom is no longer in my life this song makes me cry every time.
Reminds me of my late Grandpa who drove log trucks in Ahoskie, NC. The smell of pine or liquor sends me back to those times as a child. Hearing this song is as close as I can get without the pine or the liquor. I've seen the GD 48 times and find it interesting how a group from northern california can so successfully capture the life of southern americana. I love them! T
@oreokookie1000 waterbury still pretty sweet my freind im still a young man i had a lot of good times in the area but to tell ya the truth would have rather been there with u
I haven't heard this song since 1973. Amazing how it stays dormant in your brain for 37 years and yet.. I still remember every word. Thanks for the post.
@JimmyPage97 Since your channel lists your age as 22, Jimmy, I believe I've listened to quite a bit more than you.... dude. Thanks for the smarmy comment, kid.
@mikestrat56 Oh haha nah my comment wasn't a "smarmy" suggesting that a 22 year old person named Jimmy has heard more music then you in this life, I was wondering how you could hear this song in 1973 and not ever listen to it again for 37 years.
I didn't know the boys played the freakin' palace- used to live in Waterbury, they just rentavated the palace they should get them to come back- maybe bring Donna along for old time's sake??? NICE Thanks so much for paosting this, what a treat!- Grateful living!
I wish i was alive to see these waterbury concerts. I live one town away. My dad and my uncle are huge dead heads and always went to the concerts at the palace theater.
Oh hell yeah. Missed out on further for my 21st birthday though. Endied uo going to lots cause that's where the friends were going. Pumped for natevaand all good though. And maybe checking out further fest
ya bobby is hittin it perfect in ths one... hes so overlooked, hes like no other rhythm guitar player... just sick as hell.. the whole band was rockin this night jerrys vocals are excellent.. wish phil was a little higher in the mix but oh well
@JimmyPage97 Bobby plays Rhythm guitar, so he generally plays the chords while Jerry plays lead. But on some songs Bobby plays lead licks (i.e. China Cat Sunflower), and often he messes around with the chords or plays licks in between. Very underrated member of the band imo
@UngratefulLiving420 I'm not trying to underplay his importance, I mean I love Bob. I just feel like he is very "scripted" if you know what I'm saying.
@JimmyPage97 Yeah I hear you, and agree 100%. Unlike Jerry, his parts are absolutely scripted. But all songs are scripted in a way, without someone playing the "scripted" chords or rhythm the song simply cannot go. But Bobby kind of changes the script as he goes, like strumming patterns and variations of the chords stuff like that
@UngratefulLiving420 thats why I loved the dead. A band is no different from a team, it takes ever single person to be this successful. They stuck together, and obviously it worked.
the dead certainly the greatest. there are all kinds of greats. just loved the way jerry used melody to hold it all together. another great phish. they take it more from a tech side than melody.
The Europe 72 is the classic version but this one has the same feel--love it. My favorite Dead song right now. "Gone are the days when the ox fall down/ Take up the yoke and plow the fields around."
Psychedelic rock, classic 50´s rock´n´roll, jazz, blues, country, bluegrass, folk ballads, soul - that´s just some of the genres which the Dead touched on in their brilliant thirty-year career. - Greatest friggin´ band in the history of popular music. No competition.
I have to agree with you. Most would say that the Beatles were the greatest band, and although I love the Beatles, I have to say that because the Grateful Dead lasted longer, they hold the title!
This is a fair version, but not nearly as supple and fluid as the one on ´Europe 72´, which I would go so far as to call the definite version of this lovely and charming song.
My far, one of the best Dead songs they ever did!
