It's a calender marker. The sun rises & sets through each arch. It was originally made up of 3 circles & would have been covered by a thatched roof. The Stone Henge is the representation of the cycle of death and the Wood Henge it the representation of life.

For each Solstice, the Druids & worshippers with their families would camp at the Wood Henge. Then they'd make their way to the Stone Henge & pass through the gateway to start the festival, then head back to the Wood Henge & party!
