  • I was brought here because of "Berkley in the Sixties" on netflix.

  • Wretches and Kings nice XD

  • So lame that most of you were NOT brought here by the original much better band that used this first. I suggest you all go and listen to the band Cog now. Forget Linkin Park. They are copy cats.

  • @insomniajwf

yawn.. there are no original ideas.. piss off.

  • Thumbs up if eloquence brought you here.

  • I feel, Linkin park is much more than just a band !

  • @spideysoms1 me too i know how you feel

  • The NDAA bought me here.

    Twitter: #NDAA

  • I have the Berkley in the Sixties video at home. These are great memories for me at the time I lived and went to school in San Francisco. I heard Mario's speech later and was part of the students' movement but I was too young, was still in high school.

  • thumbs up if linkin park brought you here

  • Mario Savio was wonderful at that moment in time.

  • haha it sounds very wierd if you know the song!

  • S"it, I think i crapped my pants

  • ?He's sort of paraphrasing thoreau, no

  • The top one percent disliked this video.

  • Where's the part of Linkin Park now?

  • The fact that you jumped right into playing the islam and socialism cards sort of pigeonholed you.

  • I'm going to end this Good Riddance vs. Linkin Park debate right now....

Both bands are shitty alt rock bullshit targeted at angsty teens, that being said they don't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as this speech because of it's historical significance. Much less "thanks" for using it to fill a few seconds on their shitty music.

    I win.

  • Who the hell disliked this!?

  • What does he really mean with the speech? That we, the people, aren't any slaves for the goverment and the companies, who's claim, that they own us as there own? Is that kind of what he means? That we can't be bought, we are all human beings, and therefore has the right to act like one and claim our rights in this society we're a part of. Is that purpouse of his speech???

  • The video cuts out before the next line:

"That doesn't mean that you have to break anything. One thousand people sitting down some place, not letting anybody by, not [letting] anything happen, can stop any machine, including this machine! And it will stop!"

  • Nice sound bite. Not much context. Kinda like Occupy.

  • @WoundedEgo Yea, god forbid you actually do your OWN research and study. No, just expect the media to feed it all to you.

    Sorry, epic fail.

  • @sakar181 ... "Rebels without a clue"...

  • @WoundedEgo

Ahh, so you dont care about freedom of speech? Cause thats what this speech was about. A person was arrested for HANDING OUT PAPERS. If thats not odious and reprehensible to you, then you are anti-free thought, anti-intellectual freedom, and against the principles in the 1st Amendment.

Again, thanks for doing your research, just like fox, rush, glenn and hannity.

Rebels without a clue.... seems you're the one who hasn't a clue. And you cant buy one from wal-mart. Sorry.

    Fail.

  • @sakar181 Um... I didn't say I don't care about freedom of speech, did I? Have you been arrested for HANDING OUT PAPERS? Um, no.

Freedom of speech is about saying something meaningful, not about parking yourself in a public place and brooding. Say something other than the obvious, praying that somehow you'll get to be a martyr out of all of this hoopla.

  • @WoundedEgo

Since when is OWS not saying something meaningful? They are talking about the demonstrable and ignored inequality inherent in the system. They are talking about the poor, the hungry, the homeless, and the disenfranchised. They are pointing to REAL flwas in the system that the corporate media would rather you ignore. They are shedding light on the police state.

And dont BS me with 'why sleep there?' Hoovervilles & the Bonus Army are historical precedent.

    Go back to your hole.

  • @sakar181 Inequality is inherint in any system. What system does your particular group of people who sleep in a park under the banner of "OWS" espouse? Name the system of all things equal.

  • @WoundedEgo

The problem is the vast, yawning chasm of inequality, only matched in the year before the great depression. THATS part of the problem. And you ignored my question.

Whats wrong with exposing this massive inequality thats protected by the 1% and their drones like you? Whats wrong with feeding the hungry, many of whom are children? Whats wrong with saying that the system is rigged?

    Nothing. Because its the truth.

And your question exemplifies your ignorance of OWS.

  • @sakar181 Um... sakar... you accused me of not answering your question... but it is YOU who have avoided the question... THE question... if "the system" is what the problem is, once you've annoyed it to death, with what do you intend to replace it?

Oh wait, you haven't thought that far in advance... your agenda is just to whine until you are martyred...

  • @WoundedEgo

Your ignorance of OWS is again evident. The movement isn't about saying that we need 'these exact reforms'. You would know this if you had taken the time to do your own research. Whats wrong with standing up and saying 'the system is royally fucked, and Im here to say that'? Many occupiers feel that the system is beyond repair. Others not. It's a long, ongoing process. Just because AFP had the teabaggers demands in concrete doesnt mean everyone should follow that model.

  • @sakar181 sakar, you are just a sucker for those exploiting you. You claim that all you are about is saying that the system contains inequalities (duh), but you are listening to a speech about rampant vandalism in order to destroy the [American] system... so if you are participating in a movement to destroy the US, with what will it be replaced? Islam? Socialism? Anarchy?

Don't try to villfy me by identify me with other groups your group characterizes as idiots.

  • @WoundedEgo

Since when does the destruction of a country lead you to immediately think it'll be replaced with a religion; oddly, the same thing many people like you want. IE, a christian theocracy. The right, vilifying a branch of the same god the worship; yahweh, not reagan.

Anyway, thanks for avoiding the question & demonstrating your total lack of understanding or curiosity. Avoid the question again & again, like I wont notice.

    Nutless drone.

  • @WoundedEgo Also: I NEVER said that 'all you are about is saying that the system contains inequalities', that is you lying. Bad. Learn to read before engaging in debate.

    Cretin.

  • @WoundedEgo You seem to let others think for you. I dont. If you took a few minutes to look, you may find some of the MANY ideas put forth by OWS. But no, Billo says they have no message, so it MUST be true!!

Now, answer my question, or you have demonstrated beyond reasonable doubt that you have no coherent thoughts about it, relying only on what you learn from that withering husk that is talk radio & fox.

Come on, man up or shut up. Thought you conservatives had balls? Apparently not.

  • @WoundedEgo

Have you even taken the time to go to the NYCGA's site to read what THEY say, or do you just gobble up the moronic propaganda of the right wing talking point machine? I'd lay cash on the fact that you havent the intellectual curiosity nor honesty to actually do your own investigation.

    But, thats typical of teabaggers.

  • "putting your bodies on the gears, on the levers, upon all the apparatus." I'm thinking of cal students putting their bodies in front of berkely police.

  • @slimjimzquinn27 Sounds like a bunch of vandals to me.

  • Or you could just go to another college...

  • I give credit to the bands Cog an Fear Factory for making me aware of this message. This is the kind of person that should have been in charge of OWS.

  • I AM LOOKING FOR SOMEONE WHO WITNESSED THIS SPEECH IN PERSON!!!

I am making a documentary that compares the current Occupy Movement with the Free Speech movement in the 1960's. Is there anyone here who listend to Mario give this speech or any speech and that LIVES IN THE BAY AREA, California???

Please Personal message me or reply to this comment!!! Please thumbs this up so everyone can see this message! thank you!

  • @kitlarson I would try Mike Parker. I think he is in Richmond and supportive of Occupy. I am hesitant to put his email in this forum. Contact me.

  • @kitlarson

I was there and watched that speech.. I was a law student at Boalt Hall thinking only about school. After that speech, I left my law school buddies and sat in that night in Sproul Hall. The rest of my law school days I was a very active radical working for Civil Rights. I cry every time I hear that speech. If you post your email address I will get in touch. I live in Marin county

  • @kitlarson what will it be called

  • @ThePistolero909 I finished my documentary short. I turned out that Mario's speech wasn't a big part of the movie, yet it is still included. You can see it on my channel under: Our Occupation.

  • 12/02/1964 was a grateful day I agree with mario slavo we are human beings not consumers or people time to kill the machine of money nothing to big to fail WE WILL KILL THE MACHINE.

  • @Underdog123 Hey, you who would murder the US system... with what do you intend to replace it?

  • @WoundedEgo well don't give out names you didn't good for you I would suggest code cracking and capticha you do that on youtube, facebook, twitter and yahoo that needs to be the answer let me say we live In a COMSUMER BASED LIFE called BIG SOCIETY OCCUPY WALL STREET neds to CLASH the HOME and the FAMILY In DISTURBIA 666 ANTI CHRIST hates HUMAN LIFE you understand right.

  • Is that Tom Hayden walking back and forth in front of the camera at the beginning of the clip?

  • 4 people have infused with the machine

  • what a great speech

  • I cant help thinking that what he says from 1:20 on applies to the Penn State scandal!

  • Mario Savio>2k11 protesters

  • That was dynamite.

  • After this video ended I heard:

Tuuum sh tum sh tum panpan tum sh tum sh tum panpan

  • People who upload Mario Savio's speech on the steps of Sproule Hall

Y U NO UPLOAD LAST WORD

  • Fuck Cylon Occupied New-Caprica!

  • linkin park and the feilm half nelson led me here!

  • Mario was watched by the FBI til the day he died.

  • for a transcript of this famous speech, search the internet for

"Sit-in Address on the Steps of Sproul Hall Mario Savio American Rhetoric"

  • the machine showed me this...

  • I applaud the speech. I applaud the use of the speech by any band, cartoon, video, movie, or whatever. I look forward to the use of this speech in 2011, and have no doubt it will be current in 3011 when the notion of a park is either prevalent or a historical reference to a place where trees once stood. Perhaps it will be remembered as the first "Occupy Berkeley" speech. See the "Mario Savio Memorial Lecture Fund" site for more on Mario.

  • This speech will endure far longer than any band who utilizes its message.

  • linkin park led me hear

  • I never heard of this before and i'm very happy LINKIN PARK put this in one of their songs. I know LINKIN PARK doesn't gets the credit in this amazing spech, but still, without them probably i would never have heard of Mario and what they did was just help spread the message with such and amazing song... I take my hat off to Mario AND Linkin Park.

  • @I2EF Linkin Park sucks. Fear Factory sampled it first as far as I know and btw, Linkin Park sucks. I think Savio would write a speech about how shitty Linkin Park is if he was alive. Too bad he isn't. Maybe Fear Factory will, I can still dream, right? Did I mention Linkin Park blows goats and I have proof?

  • @LeCauchemar1 First of all, it's your opinion dude, not a fact. 2nd i know Fear Factory sampled it first, but still, they don't get the credits, plus i'm not a fan of FF (never heard of them before) so if LP haven't put this in one of their songs i probably never have been here. 3rd We already know how much you hate LP, anyways, all you said it's an opinion; LeCauchemar1, you don't have proofs of anything. Peace.

  • @I2EF that was the worst end to a youtube arguement ever ha. Fear Facorty rocks, Linkin park well... I can dig them. But I will say on a different note music is a universal language, without that sample most of the people on here would never hear the message etc etc

  • @blackoutcider so...

  • @I2EF don't replace one arguement with another.

  • @blackoutcider uh? sorry if i don't understand but what are you trying to say?

  • @I2EF Lol all good nevermind

  • @I2EF

Actually Linkin Park ripped it off a band called Good Riddance who were the first to sample the audio.

  • @voltairevillain Neither Linkin Park or that other band did the speech, all the credit goes to Mario, but by your logic "Good Riddance" ripped it off from Mario. Also I'm fan of Linkin Park not "Good Riddance" that's why i thank Linkin Park.

  • @I2EF It was also sampled by Fear Factory, paraphrased in Battlestar Galactica and probably a bunch of other places too, for me its one of the defining speeches of the 20th century powerful stuff.

  • @I2EF Good Riddance was waaaaay before Linkin Park.

  • @I2EF that is exactly what i have been telling people its good to see someone else saying that

  • A great speech. And for all the Linkin Park leg humpers, Fear Factory used this speech back in 1998 on the Obsolete album in the song, 'Timelessness.'

  • This is actually pathetic. Suddenly, millions of teenagers desire to "rage against the machine" simply, because Linkin Park included Savio's speech in their "Wretches & Kings". They are completely unaware of the context this came from. Savio's "bodies upon the gears" was actually acting as a catalyst for the "Free Speech Movement" (i.e., civil rights). Not some type of flippant compulsion to defy authority. And so, the majority allow the media to choose their political views for them.

  • @Hyperactiveroxerchic I totally understand what you are saying but from the way i look at it is that it is a start for the younger generation to open there eye's and see the world as it is and not what they where told it was. My oldest son was woke up by " Ministry" end of days part 2 so music is a powerful tool. I guess a saying comes to mind" There is a bit of truth to all the BS"

  • FFS, Linkin' Park is not even a good band; for all their promotion and artificial hype in the early 2000s what legacy did they leave in Rock? Who did they influence? Nobody, absolutely no one worthy of mention. So stop bringing up them instead of serious issues!

  • @noobyfromhell they made a new genre of rock, Chester is the 44th ranked best metal vocalist in the world(not trying to be an asshole :p)

  • Helix6! :D

  • hey uploader, you cut off the end of the speech. you cunt.

  • @d33pS3Ad1v3r All of them are like that.

  • 1:32 LOL That's what she said! But good speech though, the Linkin Park song rulz

  • LINKIN PARK! :D

  • LINKIN PARK! :D

  • Comment removed

  • people.... yes most people look up this song because of linkin park but still. there is no reason to be mad. linkin park didnt have anything to do with the machine... they did it becauseits inspaarational (excuse the spelling). they did it with robert oppeinheimer and martin luther king jr. dont get mad because they used it in their album. people are just idiots and give all the credit to them.

  • can anyone educate me by telling me the brief background or maybe the deeper message behind? i fear i may misinterpret the speech

  • @jasontseshinglee Mario Savio was a famous member of the Free Speech Movement at UC Berkeley back in 1964. The organization was made to protest for the right to free speech on campus in the form of political rallies and protests as well as support the civil rights movement. This speech was made when UC president Clark Kerr refused to lift the ban on on-campus political gatherings because it'd be equal to "the manager of a firm making a statement publicly in opposition to his board of directors".

  • @TheModernPhilosopher thx bro! =)

  • fear factory put this in a song years ago... jus sayin...

  • @yurgayimcool and it was a far better, more moving song, more relevant.

  • @ sampsonra1, so true dude..

  • fuck linkin park, think for yourself

  • wow amazing speech, so powerful and passionate!! FREEDOM!!!!

  • America needs to hear this now more than ever!!!

  • ive always loved these speaches but id only clocked on to the fact that it was linkin park at the end,its good to see theyve drawn some attention to it but im ashamed that i didnt know about this before hand!

  • watch?v=3c1wASJx2x8

  • I love how Linkin Park put this in Wretches and kings

  • Goose bumps... as for linkin park, there is nothing wrong with them using this. Yes it existed way before linkin park, but more importantly they helped spread this to a much larger audiance which only makes it stronger!

  • What machine is he talking about?

  • @xlrd98 the Matrix machines.

  • I love how Linkin Park utilized this in their new album. They really have evolved into great artists. They aren't some generic pop singer who sings about the same old things OVER AND OVER AND OVER again.

  • i didnt know drew carey was there lol

    mario savio forever !!!!!!

  • when future historians write about how hippies bankrupted America they'll probably include a few vids of this soon to be institutionalized demagogue.

  • Dude changed history with the free speech movement.Sometimes this footage is considered a record of the spark that lit the future as he was not afraid to question.

  • It gives me shivers down my spine :)

  • 1:20 to 1:40 Linkin Park - Wrectches and Kings

  • What song by Linkin Park has this speech?

  • @SheemiesonofStanley Wretches and Kings

  • @Shanem016 thanks

  • i know that ppl r saying that ppl only listen to this as if it was linkin park but u im here because of linkin park so they helped spread his message, so reli we should listen to mario via linkin park

  • Linkin Park did a terrific job spreading awareness of such a great speech. however, some people need to step back and realize that this goes MUCH further than LP.

  • My favourite :)

  • thank you for standing up sir!

  • good speech ...i see that people realize that other people realize that they comment on how its from wretches and kings. thats true however, this speech is very motivational

  • This is the guy from Wretches and Kings by Linkin Park.

  • Fear factory used this in their song "timelessness" way before Linkin park

  • Italian immigrants descendents.

    From this to jersey shore.

  • @ytrewQwerty I know, it's a shame.

  • "Mario's famous speech is sampled in many songs including "An Ounce Of Prevention" from the album On Little Known Frequencies by the band From Monument to Masses, "Timelessness" by the band Fear Factory, "The Movie's Over" by the Australian band Cog, "Article IV" by the Santa Cruz band Good Riddance, "Here Come The Pigs" by Deadsoul Tribe and "Wretches and Kings" from the album" Linkin park where not the first to use his speech

  • The top comments of this video are seriously about Linkin Park? Holy fuck.

  • @DillingerEscp well not anymore thanks to you lol

  • @DillingerEscp First time I heard this from was not from that shitty band but from a good band. Fear Factory. So I got curious as where the speech came from and searched it only to find it here. This is a damned good speech.

  • @Shinakumiatsu Yeah the first time I heard this was in Timelessness by Fear Factory. It sounded awesome with the EQ sweep-type effect they used and the music behind it. At the time I had no idea who it was or what it was about, but later in life when I learned about Savio it really made sense to put it into that album.

  • @MIDIandCode I completely agree. Especially with the story that came with that album in the booklet. Holy crap man.

  • @DillingerEscp

Hrm. You seem to have made one yourself.

  • Comment removed

  • thumbs up if after he said the part from linkin park you started going "BERM BERM BERM A WAP WAP"

  • Every person who uploads this video cuts off the word "all" at the end, lol. No one knows how to cut a video :P

  • really, I'm a Linkin Park's fan, but just stop talking about them in this video, and any videos about Mario Savio speaking this..Linkin Park brought me here too, but I don't wanna comment distracting..

  • fuck that! GOOD RIDDANCE!

  • i made an account on youtube just to leave this comment. all of you people who are giving linkin park credit for using this are a part of this machine. to turn this speech by savio into simulacrum is to participate in the most disgusting behavior. stop linkin parking and start thinking about what he is speaking of. who are the board of directors in your life? arent these same social organizations destroying cal right now!? if you think the machine is sickening then for the sake of all, stop it!

  • @amorreale22 Chill man. It's just a song. Besides, I think it was great how they used this in Wretches and Kings, and it defines the song well. To quote the song: "the people up top push the people down low"

  • @amorreale22 no offence really, but i dont get the logic behind the words. how giving linkin park credit is participating in the machine operation? why listening to wretches and kings means we have not started thinking about what he is speaking of? why listening to wretches and kings means we do not think the machine is sickening? thinking in another way, linkin park is helping to spread his words only... in all politeness, no offence intended

  • @amorreale22 Just Shut Up. no one cares

  • @amorreale22 I all honesty, Linkin Park Used it because they felt it reflected how they and most of their fan base felt. LP wanted more people to know who he was and to maybe, just maybe, be more curious about his cause and to start thinking, just as you have suggested some do. Unfortunately, most of them aren't much for independent thought and just blindly follow what sounds good as a rhythm or may get some people pumped up. but do nothing. LP is using the machine against itself.

  • Screw linkin park fear factory used this in their song first. And why are people bringing that up anyway. Its a me mario savio!

  • Well, these comments are depressing. Is there anything the mainstream won't co-opt and commodify?

  • @Mediocreism i wish i could thumbs up this comment a thousand times.

  • it is awesome that LP used this and i love the conitations it had its self

  • 1:20-1:46...real life: mario savio speech.... my head: STEEL UNLOAD! FINAL BLOW! WE THE ANIMALS TAKE CONTROL!! HEAR US NOW! CLEAR AND TRUE! WRETCHES AND KINGS WE COME FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!! LP4EVA!!!!!

  • linkin park are wak. this is mario

  • like this, if youtubed this video, after hearing W&K, just to hear the epic lines from 1:20 to 1:46

    -LP for ever! <3 :D

  • So I heard this in my history class... :D

  • Talk about Linkin Park somewhere else!! Mario Savio has nothing to do with such a crappy band.

  • @ChromatopelmaDude no. dude srsly. your a fail.

  • like this if you got excited when the linkin park part came up!

  • Also used in the Fear Factory song, Timelessness

  • i half expected to hear wretches and kings at the end

  • Forget Linkin Park, Cog sent me here...

  • @ClancyNimbus same here

  • if i see one more god damn linkin park faggot comment on this ughh lol

  • i seriously expected music to start playing after he said that lol

  • It's incredible how can a speech be know only as "a part of a linkin park's song", btw I luv LP.

  • "unless you are free, the machine will be prevented from working at all"
