  • Absolutely stunning and beautiful locomotive. Without a doubt the V&T is the most elegant rail line of its time. Would love to see some Carson and Colorado stuff at the museum too. Carson City is a steam train paradise, loaded with history.

  • she steams its just that her boiler permits expired and rumor has it that she will pull a train down to carson city on the new trackage to eastgate siding.

  • The fella in the Museum said the Boiler was beyond repair, and wasn't feasible to try and return to service, I don't know if that's true or not, but that's what he told us.

  • @freckldnred the boiler is constructed out of Wrought iron so it is there for illegal to steam whether the boiler is trashed or not. Inyo's and Genoa's boilers are lap-seam steel vessels which is why Inyo is permitted to steam, but due to the fact the seams are covered from what I heard, she is only allowed 75 PSI from the State Of Nevada. If Genoa was given a full inspection, FRA might permit her to be steamed within 125 PSI like the Eureka & Palisade. Dayton needs a steel boiler to steam

  • @09jrasner703 Yeah, I think you might have this mixed up with another locomotive, perhaps the McCloud #18 that is indeed now running to Carson City and back.

The Dayton, beyond the repair work that would not retain its original boiler, will also not likely run in regular service because it's owned by the Nevada Department of Cultural Affairs. Aside from the fact that the V&T government commission has pissed them off, the goal is preservation, not operation.

  • Beatiful locomotive!

  • excellence

  • Thanks a lot.

  • The ol Dayton aBeutiful Locomotive indeed.Buitl in 1874 by the sacremnto Locomotive works(sorry i misspelt scramento)She can not run because her Boiler has nothing in it.I have Faith She will be restored to Stemaing Conditions

  • Dang nice vid. I have been into that very building where that engine is located. I remember when they put that engine on a truck at the Nevada State RR museum in Carson City and then took it to Virginia City.

  • I remeber that day too.Its sad THat she isnt able to steam No Tube in her boile rnotin it take abotu a 1,000 dollars to get her fixed up is what i heared but they ost liekly have to replace the boiler :(

  • It is to bad that they cant get this thing running and have it run along with the 29 or even double head with the 29. The Inyo is a major attraction when they run it at the carson city museum why not do the same with this one in virginia city since both the inyo and daton look very similar.

  • I want her to steam to, but she would need a new boiler, and to get her up to FRA standrds for operating steam, the would need to alter her erevesbly... witch dosn't mater if they put in a new boiler because... never mind she can be made rail worthy, it's just a question of a new boiler, the old one is made of iron of I am not mistaken witch is illigal to operate. Lets get her a new boiler! I'll donate to help get it done, if not with money, man hours... whos with me!? Sorry I can't spell.

  • I'm sure the historical society will gladly accept your generous donations! It only takes money.

  • She has never been a diesel, always a steam. she can't run because they don't have the money to bring it back to steam.

  • This engine needs to be brought back to live steam. Converting it to diesel is a disgrace. Thanks for posting.

  • I was probably converted to oil by the Virginia and Truckee Railway around 1907.

  • @virginiatruckee most engines were converted to Oil around that time except the Genoa which remained a wood firing locomotive along the Empire and J.W. Bowker. Some of the other moguls might have been converted like the Tahoe, some might have remained wood fired as well, but I can only confirm engines number 12, 13, and 21 to have remained wood firing all of their operating careers until retirement.
