You're missing a few points there...

1. The Empire doesn't care how many casualties there will be for them. They're like the USSR. Little interest for lives of soldiers, since there are AT LEAST sixteen billion of them.

2. They were after Princess Leia, and blowing up the whole damn ship isn't a very good capture strategy.

Maybe...in his grave, anyway. This scream was recorded at some time in the 50's while the guy seemed to be in his 30's or 40's. If he is still alive, he would be pretty old today.

Stormtroopers had blaster rifles :P Also, a blaster machine gun would overheat too fast, and would be heavy, and Stormtroopers don't use blaster machine guns do they? They had rotary blaster cannons in the clone wars but that's different because Stormtroopers are 'supposedly' 1337, but Clonetroopers were basic cannon fodder

@DamnedUsernameThing Why a blaster machine gun? I don't see either side wearing anything that would stop conventional bullets. Anything that wasn't semi-automatic would have worked wonders here. And I find it hard to believe the elite stormtroopers didn't have some sort of barrier. It's not like they didn't know they were walking into a corridor full of defenders...

Running joke. It's not just movies, games do it too nowadays, even though they have voice actors, and even though those voice actors may record other screams. They'll throw in a wilhelm somewhere just because. There's no real reason for it, there are other screams, they just use this one because it's funny.

As GiefGoldPix says, this scream was used by first time in "Distant Drums", in 1951, and was labeled as "Man being eaten by alligator". After that, the scream was used in 1953's "The Charge at Feather River", where a character named "Pvt. Wilhelm" is wounded in his leg by an arrow. That's the story.
