Thumb Position Tips On Guitar

It seems the only people who put the thumb behind the neck are classical guitar players. so I wonder if it helps with elecric guitar, cause ive been trying to play like that (thumb behind) and its harder

it does for leads. just try and get used to it.

@xxRandomnameguyxx Yeah it really depends. Putting your thumb over the neck is very very usefull when you're attempting big bends, which is why you see Hendrix and countless blues-rock players play in that fashion. Whenever you're moving left-right or attempting big stretchshapes it's always better to but it behind the neck.

hendrix had big hands and could wrap his thumb around and still keep his wrist straight. think hand size is a big issure here.

not really. i have really small hands and fingers and i use my thumb. I hardly do barre chords because i use my thumb.

@mrextrastrong yes, he was a real monkey, but his playing is aged in terms of speed, like that you can play slow as he is, and that's it

walt u should explain classical guitar thumb position also because usually the thumb is not even visable

It's not because the "neck is high" (I'm guessing you mean the neck is WIDE). Classical guitarists keep their thumbs near the center of the neck 'cuz it enables the hand to stretch farther.

Wrapping the thumb over the neck causes the fingers to flatten close to the strings. This can cause accidental touching of strings.

Jimi used to play with flattened fingers when he played scale runs. This dampened the other strings, which he didn't care about.
