My girlfriends' father was an artillery captain. He spent 4 years in Siberia returning to Duesseldorf in 1949. He told me that every German soldier knew about the death camps which suggests that your father must have known about them too. That is not to claim that he was part of this horror - but it is your heritage.
The German heritage is much bigger than the 12 years of the Nazis, as the British heritage is much bigger than the annihilation of 6 Million Bengals, the 1 Million victims of the Irish famine or the many women and children starved to death in British concentration camps in Africa.

Well, you mentioned my father who was Major Surgeon at the end of the war. He was one of the doctors who had to inspect the Main Hospital in Feodosa after it was reconquered by the Wehrmacht. He also had to prepare many dead soldiers for the photographer near Charcov, who were mistreated by Russian/Jewish partisans and tortured to death.
In spite of that he always expressed his respect for the adversary. There still are many ties between SU troops and Germans.

He told stories of their mistreatment by the guards and said that neither he nor any of his comrades expected to survive or ever see Germany again. The reason for their return is Allied pressure on the Russians but I would not expect you to acknowledge that. He told me that he understood why the Russians treated them so badly. He never expressed any hatred for the Ivans as he called them..
Siberia was another game. One of my wife´s uncles, a medic too, was in Siberia until 1952. He certainly made the same experiences as your nearly father in law. He never felt anger, because the POWs could see that the guards often had little more to eat than they themselves. He learned a bit Russian and then he began to understand. The many executions always started when the Commissars visited the camp. After they had left the normal work went on.

One of the German seamen who survived was rescued by sailors from the destroyer Devonshire. The German sailor said on the film, he and his comrades were treated like brothers aboard the ship. German Uboats crews were less kind towards the crews of the ships they sank in the Atlantic.It has to be said however that the Capt of the Graf Spee treated captured crews very correctly.

In Namibia they still have a big statue of the Kaiser and in Windhook many streets are named after German Generals and scientists still today. Well, you mentioned my father who was Major Surgeon at the end of the war. He was one of the doctors who had to inspect the Main Hospital in Feodosa after it was reconquered by the Wehrmacht. He also had to prepare many dead soldiers for the photographer near Charcov, who were mistreated by Russian/Jewish partisans and tortured to death.
In spite of that he always expressed his respect for the adversary. There still are many ties between SU troops and Germans.

@robinhood48 My girlfriends father was one of the 10% of German POWs who survived the Siberia experience. He told stories of their mistreatment by the guards and said that neither he nor any of his comrades expected to survive or ever see Germany again. The reason for their return is Allied pressure on the Russians but I would not expect you to acknowledge that. He told me that he understood why the Russians treated them so badly. He never expressed any hatred for the Ivans as he called them..

Siberia was another game. One of my wife´s uncles, a medic too, was in Siberia until 1952. He certainly made the same experiences as your nearly father in law. He never felt anger, because the POWs could see that the guards often had little more to eat than they themselves. He learned a bit Russian and then he began to understand. The many executions always started when the Commissars visited the camp. After they had left the normal work went on.

German and Italian POWs were treated with respect as POWs in my country - indeed a great many stayed here after they were released, connecting with the farms they had worked on voluntarily. However, IF someone had done to my countrymen what Germans did to Russians, I think some mistreatment was understandable if not justifiable. No-one could justify the rape of women in Berlin but revenge is a powerful emotion.

@robinhood48 I saw a documentary film recently called 'Sink the Bismark' a story I'm sure you will know well. One of the German seamen who survived was rescued by sailors from the destroyer Devonshire. The German sailor said on the film, he and his comrades were treated like brothers aboard the ship. German Uboats crews were less kind towards the crews of the ships they sank in the Atlantic.It has to be said however that the Capt of the Graf Spee treated captured crews very correctly.

Of course the German sailors were treated according to the rule of the Geneva Convention, Great Britain and the German Reich had signed this treaty, the USSR did not.
The U- Boats were not allowed to help enemy- sailors since the Lakonia affair, when a German boat saving castaways came under attack by enemy planes. The war between Great Britain was a gentlemen´s war.

It probably was the Dorsetshire but the German sailor on the programme described how he was treated by the sailors as 'wie Brueder haben sie uns behandlt' that's not the same as according to the Geneva Convention. I agree about the opposing ideologies of the Communist and the Fascist regimes. I have memories of seeing a string of German Uboats that had sailed into the Caledonian Canal in Scotlandto surrender. People were siphoning off their diesel which was very scarce.

In Namibia they still have a big statue of the Kaiser and in Windhook many streets are named after German Generals and scientists still today. The chief of the Herreros described the riot and the crackdown as a big fight of two famous nations and he friendly accepted the German apologies.

My father fought in WW2 in Cyrenaica against the Italian and German armies. He had great respect for both Germans and Italians. He was actually captured by the Germans, and got on very well with them. He even made a joke about one of the SS officers - another German, a colonel said "well he's Austrian". The SS man laughed also. The was never any bad feeling.

The war in North Africa was a gentlemen´s war. It was the last war which was conducted according to the rules of the Hague Convention and the Geneva Convention. German and British medics operated side by side in the same tent as it happened during Operation Market Garden.
The Africa campaign was also the first full mechanised war in history. You are right, the Waffen SS also fought in North Africa.

I don't actually believe that Hitler wanted war with Britain. He wanted to be left alone to take control of Europe and leave Britain with its Empire. The fact is that the German attempt at building a colonial empire was as unsuccessful its attempt at world domination . I was always amused at Hitlers' close friendship with Mussolini when the Italians were never his committed allies. Europe is a great place now. In order for a treaty be binding by the USA Government it must pass by 2/3rd vote in the USA Senate. It didn't. It's interesting to see the USA get trashed because it tried to help Weimar Germany in 1924 with the Dawes Plan and in 1929 with the Young Plan. I know of no member of the Bush family who ever praised Hitler and Nazi Germany the way President JFK's father the Ambassador to Great Britain did after 1939. As I already said, Joseph Kennedy was so blatant in his praise of Nazi Germany that the British demanded he return home to the USA & a new ambassador be appointed by FDR.

Had this occurred in 1940 for example, the entire world have been outraged. While this sort behaviour was not illegal then, it certainly is today, and it is also why the military leaders of NATO should be arraigned in the International War Crimes Tribunal in the Hague for the illegal targeting of civilians during 1999's bombing of Serbia.
