  • Terrible comparison, Madonna didn't invent Japanese Aesthetics.

  • stupid comparation xD

  • what's the name of this song? I read in early coments that it's Machine by Chicks On Speed, but this song doesn't exist. if someone could help me... Thanks a lot.

  • Fashion and Art always overlaps. Art can never be isolated from the times.

  • and if one is going to compare based solely on color or even race...then why not compare my blue t-shirt to the granduar of the ocean..a vague task lacking a definite conclusion

  • this has nothing to do with madonna..the comparison should be between the director of madonna's video Johan Renck and matthew barney..if its possible to make a comparison at all

  • Nah, there's a WHOLE world of difference betwen them... not even to compare... one creates, the other just knows the people to hang out with to sell her products.

  • ¬¬

  • All you snotty bitches getting all wet about who is the real artist and what is authentic or who is highbrow or lowbrow......dear God suck my balls the lot of you. Just a bunch of retarded snakes trapped in a cardboard box.

  • ...finally I also do not think this is Mathew Barneys best work... I see to much cross over between reality and fiction. I prefer his scenes which are less recognisable, (yes, just returned from Nagasaki, so thats maybe where my problem is.) maybe they are also just to famous these 2 people, so you look at mathew barney and bjork but that is for me totally distracting from the transedenting content,

however I great job, its all part of the game!

However for sure an amazing job again,

  • ok does anyone knows how creation works?

isn't normal that you find interesting things in other things, for example music? is there anyone who ever listened to madonna and who started to let his mind go? nice that you made this effort, but for me at the same time its totally strange that you really compare images, we are living in a world were there is almost a limit of new possible immages, Mathew Barney is just trying to change the content of scene setting to its own world...

  • madonna and matthew barney are among my absolute favorite visual/performance artists. they really SHOULD collaborate.

  • Their use of traditional Japanese clothing etc is also completely different. Madonna ins this case is trying to make it futuristic, cool and trendy (well the costume designer is)while Barney is responding to ancient Japanese culture and rituals, as well as his 'restraint' ideas.

  • I am so glad these two do not collaborate because Madonna is not an artist, they are on completely different playing fields and any collaboration whould bastardise him. Madonna just references others works she does not create them. Madonna is only "fascinated with the bizarre" when it suits her and she will sell records. Barney also does not pursposefully seek the bizarre.

  • But, he does like to sell those records. The art world has become some unoriginal and contrived that, from the lowest of low brow (madonna) to the highest of high (barney), it rips itself off without even realizing the incest.

  • This is completely ridiculous - I'm sure you coudl find people opening their mouth and wearing Japanese clothes in millions of movies. Your assertion is absurd. By the way, Madonna only stars in this movie, she is only a singer, I'm sure she did not come up with the concept, create the costumes or anything.

  • I don't want to offend you as I loath both of these artists equally, but it seems that you are terrified at the possibility that Madonna is a viable artist. Warhol said the best artists make the most money. Has this sentiment lost truth these days?

  • Madonna did the video quite before drawing restraints came out. i have always wondered why Madonna has yet to collaborate with Mr Barney thier facination with the bizzare is quite similar. I think it would be amazing to see what they come up with.

  • and they both draw from Asian culture, specifically Japanese culture, there are bound to be similitaries... and artists make references to other artists' works all the time, it isn't "stealing" if you provide a different context to your work... both can exists simultaneously and still both be valid works...

  • do people a favor and delete this video... it's totally irrelevant... maybe next you could find how matthew barney stole scenes from backstreet boys...

  • Im addicted to chicks on speed... and this song is one of the best!!! tnxs for posting ;)

  • That's not fair to Mr. Barney. Madonna has been in every situation ever! Worse still, it's all been documented, down to her very last psychic queef. And now that she's Jewish, all stops are out.

  • quite interesting.

  • I am really fascinated by how Matthew Barney's works are misunderstood :) That's it.

  • Maybe both directors had the same dreams. Some of the shots matched up better then others, Some are really stretching it to try and see the comparison. Since i cant read french i'm thinking you are trying to downplay the significance of Barney's work by comparing it to the absurdity of a Madonna video, rather then actually trying to imply that Barney "stole" this idea from this video that came out 7 years prior. It should however be noted, for the record, that Bjork wrote "Bedtime Story"

  • American, hahaha

  • madonna looks more like marilin manson in this video ..

  • I think that one can compare a lot of things to each other, and they will be like this.

But DR9 and some random Madonna music video has absolutely nothing in common, you should know that before posting such a dumbass thing.

  • you's stupid mate,

    me's sorry,

    the's notin in common

    "red, white, blue, black,

    is u bl**dy nuts"

  • White red and black are considered the traditional colours of Japan. Kimonos are the traditional dress, of course they'll recur frequently. An industrial look? lol. Scary corridor? haha. The eye brow thing is common in Japanese art (or derived from, rather). Those aren't geisha, they're serving women who traditionally wear blue. The open mouth thing? Now your getting silly. The parade? Also common to Japanese (and most, come to think of it) culture.

  • Ran out of space....

I know you were only joking, but just thought I'd say.

I think it's pretty inevitable that if two people use one primary source for aesthetics they'll come out with *broadly* (and I mean broadly) similar results.

  • In any case Matthew copied the DIRECTOR of Shitonna's video (altho I doubt it). Madonna has hardly have ANY artistic or creative concept on her whole carrer. She's just an overrated marketing product. She's fun, but when it comes to art, you can't even put them in the same sentence. The things she's copied from other people, mainly other divas who are death and other famous people are not even "arty", they are just good looking, in a plastic sense, imagery.

  • I love when the art world proves itself to be an elitist beast. Warhol's dream is dead. Thanks.

  • i love it when someone attempts to make a statement about the "art world" and sums it up with warhol

  • @YEAHfalconpunch baahahahahaaaa nice

  • hihihihi

  • They're both Japanese inspired so the themes might be the same the colors are. Good observation ans comparison.

  • Oh please, this is desperation in the extreme.

Madonna wore red once so no one else can...

  • no similarity. don't compare filth to art.

  • drawing restraint 9 is not one of barney`s best works... even though bjork is in it (i love her), the film does not reach the quality and conceptual complexity that the cremaster cycle has.

PD: I LOVE CHICKS ON SPEED!!! THEY F*** ROCK!!

  • Time for Bjork to dump her rip off artist husband.

And hook up with Thom Yorke, maybe? They'd make quite the couple.

  • fucking genius

  • i love it , i never knew i could thought about this.

  • wait. whut?

  • this is really funny in many ways, especially the eyebrow part :D

I found the music a little irritating after awhile and turned off my speakers, but other than that great job!

  • you just don`t know what good music is

  • chicks on speed "the chicks machine" is available on itunes

  • About "the cell", many "clin d'oeil" are done to contemporary ar (i wanted to add the url for the pictures but YouTube didn't allowed) : Damien Hirst : remember the horse cut in 5 parts. Hirst did it with a cow, a shark...

Xtron : models wearing paramedical /surgery /handicapped people

    gear

  • When i did this little clip to entertain may friends, i couldn't imagine 3 pages of comments ;)

a few to understand this work :

    1- i really like M.Barney's work

2- humor : dont think a second this was anything else than humor.

  • i'm not that smart...don't listen to me...LMAO!!!

  • *rowr* table of milk, table one..arro... geez, some people are taking this a LITTLE too seriously. Love your comment sacrificaltotem..."authorization to talk about Madonna" - LMAO... :P

  • chicks on speed rules!!!!! madonna and matthew barney are ok

  • I love that song!!!I´ve never heard it before and I have all their cds or at least I thought i did.. where can I download it?

  • Bullshit! Go ....and find something else

  • Oh WOW!! A person dressed in red in front of a dark backgroung! Oh yeah, Madonna is the first to have ever done that in human history. God, those comparisons.. you're so dense it hurts. And btw IF you already need to compare, you should comapare matthew barney to the director of the "nothing really matters" video, not fuckdonna. It's him who directed it and coming up with the set, Madonna just gave her OK.

  • also... both Barney and Madonna are complete rip-off artists, so its hard to say who ripped off who first! :P

  • people, cyvicunrest sounds smart. we should listen to him / her.

  • The Cell reference makes sense -- 'cause I'm pretty sure Tarsem Singh directed both the movie and madonna's video... so he probably just uses the same motifs in all his work (he also did REM's losing my religion, which has a scene VERY similar to the scene in which J.Lo's character meets Carl when he's sitting next to that chick in the bathtub)

  • The whole history of ART back into the 1200's has appropriated itself. There's no need to bash on people who honestly embrace if not even exploit their influences. One of my favorite quotes is "Creativity is the ability to hide your influences." And while some people don't hide it, quality presentation is undeniable. So get off it already.

  • I know this is not related to your clip, but I have seen other instances of Madonna references in videos and films. In The Cell, there is a floating cube with screens, just like in Madonna's Bedtime Story video. More recently, Rihanna covers herself in silver body pait in her Umbrella video, just like Madonna did in her Fever video...

  • matthew barneys a world renoun plagerist.

hes riped off tons of other artists .. yeah it does look like that madonna video, im not surprised. the guys a uber rich hack

  • I really don't think you can watch Drawing Restraint 9 and Madonna's video back to back and think that he plagiarized anything whatsoever. Also, I really don't think you have any authority to talk about any artist....even Madonna.

  • im sorry i didn't go to school to get a degree to get the authorization to to talk about Madonna,

    lol

  • Very Interesting... Thanx.

  • VERY interesting! But of course you should already know that Madonna doesn't have an original idea in her body--whoever is the "it" person/singer/musician/artist at the moment is who she wants to attach herself to. Case in point: She wanted Bjork to write THE WHOLE CD of "Bedtime Stories". Bjork said no and just wrote the title track.

  • Eh, what else is new. There hasn't been an intelligent theft of Japanese culture since Van Gogh.

  • lol, wow thats really an interesting observation, could be unintentional inspiration or a case of convergent exploitation of japanese culture ^^, but indeed: i think that a lot of barneys work is not really different to such kind of popular art, more researched maybe but still not really worth the overly pretentious demeanour (not making it available to a wider public, artificial creepiness and taboo-breaking etc.)

  • agreed

  • creo que la reflexion al final es muy interesante, y aun asi me gustan ambos dos, nothing really matters y DR9!

  • PUTAIN t es super inspire en ce moment c est GENIAL et pas ennuyeux du tout BRAVO kris

  • Which is the song you used for this video?

    Anyway, very nice...

  • "the chickmachine" by Chicks on Speed
