  • i love this tune takes me back to house partys in the basement,in jamaca queens. we had it good then ,we just didnt know it.

  • This was one of my favorite OJay's songs. I had just started basic training in the Air Force (1966) when this song was a hit. Seems like just yesterday.

  • This was a long song on a 45 back in those days. Excellent!

  • yes yes with the bsaement parties in the 60s in jamaca queens, what memorys. great posting

  • A STAND IN FOR LOVE! How many adolescent kids felt this way?! And yet, we all grew up, found someone, fell in love, and left these uncertain days behind! And yet...and yet...we return to these bittersweet memories, remembering how it was, and how BEAUTIFULLY these artists expressed our teenage angst! Thank you GOD, for these artists that expressed our feelings, at this point in time, in this country. Thank you, God, for these talented vocalists.

  • ojays at their very best with eddie on lead vocals. this song would bring down the house at the UPTOWN in philly. oooooooowe i miss those midnight shows.

  • WOW,PRE BACKSTABBERS O'JAYS.I USE TO RELATE TO THIS SONG,NOT ANYMORE,BUT I STILL LIKE TO HEAR IT-DALE ''74''Sarasota Riverview high

  • Big hit on WWRL in NYC back in the day.

  • yes this is one of the best up against the wall and sweating end of the evening songs, and i don't understand why they never put it on any of their laster albums even on the essential o'jays cd they have it live which is great , but just didn't have the favor of the original 45, thank guy, been looking for it for a long time,.

  • I remember when it was 5 of the O'Jays and they came to Milwaukee, Wisconsin at the Milwaukee Theater in 1966 or 1967 and they sung " Stand in for Love." They were fantastic and the girls went crazy. I was one of them. Good good memories of house parties in the basement with this song playing...thanks for allowing me hear this song once again and cherish the fun times when I was a teenager...

  • Ya'll messin; me UP!

  • I think the year is wrong, this is 1965 I could be wrong but I m right.

  • This song was written by O'Jays main lead singer , EDDIE LEVERT.

  • "I'm like the lonely sailor, I don't go toa." An absolute soul gem! Now how about flipping it over for "Friday Night"? (Written by Randy Newman no less!)

  • It's been a long long time since I heard this one.

  • 1966? I was 15, why does this still get to me? Issues? I don't think so. Just the best fukin song they ever did. still feel the same as I did when I WAS 15. 59 now, and still get into it. thanks for posting. has been very hard to find. still have the 45. love ya for posting.

  • @rawcoyote

I was 17 instead of 15, otherwise I could have written your post.

Just recently learned that they reissued the "Soul Sounds" LP in 2004, which, other than the 45, is the only place I've seen this song, never saw it on any of the old soul collections. Just got the LP today, now have to get a turntable to play it!

  • @Ids916, nothing but the real thing in Cleveland OH-10, Mike (The Lover) Pain. I got all messed up listing to this cut and reading the memories.

Cleveland was the only place to be, The Music Box, The Alhambra Theater, Skate Land. Pay parties, turn on the blue light all on the walls and lets get the stinky finger.

  • @SingRons hey dont forget about the playmore i went in the army the same year this came out july 66

  • I wish somebody post Oh! How You Hurt Me. William Powell at his best.

  • @Womackette Oh yes, please do, he was definitely the best. May God forever rest his soul.

  • I remember the song coming out in the fall of 1965.

  • I was sixteen went it came out and could slow very good ,man this was one of the best slow song out in 1966 ....

  • This song really takes me down memory lane living in Cleveland in the 60s in high school.

Does anyone remember Mike The Lover week days after school on WABQ until the sun went down, around 6pm in the winter and 9pm in the summer!

    '

I first saw the Ojays at a Sunday Matinee at Leo's Casino on Euclid AVE. Me and my girlfriends were fortunate to get a table up front.

Lord hammercy! Eddie Lavert exuded sexiness! They were all fine. Used to love dancing close,,, a good last dance at parties

  • micheal (payne) the lover, before him there was no other, in his tim there may be many, but when hes gone there wont be any...oh yea i remember those day, i use to tape all the radio shows so still today i can listen to..ruby green, flip forest, jim raggs, leon the burner etc...

  • @lds916 yeah i do 1420 am right

  • i here u jersey. i grew up in queens ny and we love to grind to this in those basement parties

  • grew up in nj and we loved to slow dance to this class of 67

  • Leo,s in cleveland was the place to be back in the 60,s I miss all the the great shows.

  • @oldersoul1 That's for real. That was the Jay's second home back then.

  • Also, WABQ was called "TIGERADIO". J.L. WRIGHT was also a popular Cleveland during this period. He had the popular "BATTLE OF THE STARS" segment on his radio show, where 2 famous singers or groups' songs were played, and fans called in their choices as to which group they liked better. The O'JAYS were Cleveland's local heroes, and they won many times .

  • I was a youngster when this came out, but I too remember JL Wright,(used to be in love with his voice), Ken Hawkins, and Lynn Toliver on WABQ WOW do I miss Cleveland. In da nasty N'ati now, and they don't know nothing bout this!!!!!!

  • My mom used to go to school with BIG KEN HAWKINS!! Also, don't forget JERRY G BISHOP'S local T.V. show, JERRY G and COMPANY . He used to have The O'Jays on his show all of the time. In those days, WILLIAM POWELL was a featured lead singer in the group just like EDDIE & WALTER were .I remember he & THE O'JAYS sang their early hit "Working On Your Case" on JERRY G.'S TV SHOW on Cleveland's KYW-TV (later WKYC). Jerry G eventually moved to SAN DIEGO.

  • THANK YOU ...THANK YOU ...THANK YOU I ' VE BEEN WAITING 40 YRS 4 THIS SONG USED TO PLAY THIS ON A PORTABLE RECORD PLAYER IN THE CAR {member them?} 67 CHEVELLE ...........

  • @cenwt Surely I remember the portable record player...I grew up in Brooklyn NY Gowanus projects, and went through 2 of those babies...I kept the battery manufacturer in business..LOL..6 D size batteries every Friday....Oh yeah, those were the days.....

  • this is a good slow dance. the mighty ojays is the best.

  • I fell in love with a young lady in high school 1966 this was our song, it became my theme song for a long time as I never married until real late. This was the shit! also, sweeter tomorrow, whispers & O'Jays both had five guys in the band back then. both appeared all over LA back then at dances and radio promo sock hops. oops! dating myself (Lol!)

  • Icould`nt wait to get to the party with the red light to dance with the "young ladies " on this record ,man it`s one of the all time best !!!!!!!

  • The "Mighty O'Jays". Cleveland was a great place to be in during the 60's. Possibly the best two radio stations at once and the same time, WJMO (The Mighty Mo) and WABQ. The best DJ's; Jockey John Slade, Eddie O'Jay, Ken Hawkins, Mike The Lover, Leon The Burner, The Wild Wes. The Liberty Theater, The Keith 105, The Immortal Leo's Casino. The Upbeat Show and Ken Hawkins World of Soul. Oh Yes, we saw everybody at Motown long before they became famous. Can I Get A Witness?!

  • I wish i was living back then, man yah had all the good music

  • Not only did I live it during the time, but hit all the best groups at the baddest clubs and dances. grew up in Los Angeles high school class of 1968

  • sho you right, the red carpet, circle ballroom, music box, flip forrest, jl wright, Lebron, wash allen, and i saw "eli tell a lie" last week. don't forget, lyn tolliver. dj eddie freeze

  • You got THAT right !!! People in the rest of the country don't realize that Cleveland was one of the Epicenters of Rock and Roll in the 50's and 60's ! Everything started here . That's why the decision was made to put the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame here.

  • The O'JAYS are REALLY from the CLEVELAND/CANTON area....NOT PHILADELPHIA.

  • Hey sis I feel the same as U do...

  • this is a new one for me but none the less its good

  • This all the other early O'Jays recordings were smashes in Cleveland, Ohio. You're hearing five O'Jays singing: Eddie Levert, Walter Williams, Bill Isles, Bobby Massey and Bill Isles. They cut a live version on this song at Leo's Casino at a show I attended.

  • Thankyouthankyouthankyou!!!!!! I will never forget this one, or my surroundings when I first heard it. Yes, some sweet, delicious memories. "C" baby, wherever you are thank you for giving me something to remember for a lifetime.

  • This is the only spot where I can find this song. I still have the 45 but would like to get it on any digital source - CD, MP3, whatever. This was my song while at Linden (NJ) High School. Any suggestions in finding this would be appreciated or I will have to buy the thing that digitalizes vinyl.

  • i was in the 96th trans. apo when this came out love it

  • 1965 my friend Carol's red light party! Thanks for the memory. This along with Sad Girl(Jay Wiggins) is one of my favorite grind songs. Mama would have beat me good.

  • If my mother could have seen me and my boyfriend grinding to that song,in the basement of my girl friends party red light and all! I probably wouldn't be writing this comment. Carol's party 1965 thanks for the memory.

  • This song really takes me back. Listening to this song is like going back in time. Sounds as good now as it did then. Don't understand why this song never really blew up.
