This is just the beginning. There is going to be fire ball showers as we approach the debris field that lies at the galactic plane. Just like these last two we won't see it until it's too late. I believe something will happen though. You know that saying, "When all the stars are lined up the right way" I don't know what's going to happen but I can't wait to see. Hope it's big.

@clay4you I didn't say anything about the actual size, I was referring to the "big" event people keep ranting about. It doesn't end, it restarts. That's what makes it a cycle. I think it's way more likely that this event (whatever it is) will have something to do with a change in our way of thinking, maybe a jump in our evolution. Maybe the last time this happened was the same time we discovered fire. Maybe not, who knows.

The doomsday scenarios are interesting but I don't see it as a doomsday. even if we did all die, our energy would probably just be transferred into something else. We will always live on, there is no "bad" scenario when every one ends with life.

I do love the concept of dinosaurs but I see them more as big animals (big probably because of the oxygen content or because they had more time to keep evolving) and their death was nothing special IMO. We only think it is because we only look at the ones that died, the ones that survived to procreate we simply see as boring old animals.

I read about it before it happened. The article I read placed it at over 300,000 miles away, which must have been a miscalculation. In July of 2008 (i think it was) another one came 76,000 miles away from Earth.

@klegster they aren't "carbon dating" anything. Look up the K-T extinction event on Wikipedia. The entire earth has a uniform layer of debris in the exact same geological stratum, below that layer dinosaurs are dominant, above that layer they don't exist... based on the collected evidence the theory is that something created the layer while killing the dinosaurs. What could do both at once? A cosmic impact. Very simple. No carbon dating.

it's not carbon dating. depending on where the layer of soil is (deeper means older) they can tell when something happened thanks mainly to the fossil record. If there's a layer of volcanic ash, guess what... there was a volcanic eruption. if there's a layer of some asteroid or meteor debris, guess what... KABOOM!!
