first time i heard this i listened to it of a spare casette tape that was going to get chucked away. but i held on to it, and then one day i had a listen to what was on before i recorded over a very good concert with this song on it. years later the tape has been lost but the music still remains with me. oh yeah i still have most of the songs on hard drive too!
My great friend Ben and I co-owned a '49 Vincent HRD in 1971, not a Black Lightning but machine like no other. I sold out to Ben when I left Oxfordshire. We rode that bike all over the area. Brings a smile to my face and a tear to my eye now
Wonderful, wonderful song with fantastic playing, not a bad deal for red molly either in 2009 a vincent black lightening was sold at Bonhams for £221,500, the most expensive motorcycle ever sold at auction in the UK
heard this on radio 2 on mike harding. not my usual thing but this blew me away. This combines all the things a song should be, performed by a master.
I'm 16 and this is the first time I've ever heard Richard Thompson. Halfway trough the video I looked over my computer to a mirror, and started laughing as I was wearing an extremely goofy expression of pure awe on my face. ;D
I Want To See the Bright Lights Tonight - to hear the first and perhaps best of his proper album collaborations with his then wife, Linda.
And, finally, Mirror Blue - the great mid 90s album from which this track is taken. Perhaps his greatest album yet.
But really, give it all a go if you've the time. If you're into guitar music and want any further recommendations of albums etc (hey, I know that this one was kinda forced upon you, but, well, I couldn't resist)...
I am a man of 36 and this song brings me to tears with the memory of my father, an avid classic British motorcycle collector. He left myself and my family a huge collection of motorcycles as a legacy.
Beautiful song and fantastic memories my beloved dad.
@carpen1955 The whole 2006 concert is an absolute must-have. But re. Vincents...being German I´m expected to be a Germanbikenazi (NSU = Norton Spares Used) - give me an English Lady and I´ll happily convert from metric bolts and nuts.
first version of this song that i heard was done by Reckless Kelly but it took a full band to sound this good. amazing .

When RT plays at Tarrytown Music Hall one of the local residents brings his genuine '52 Vincent Black Lightning.

@GravityLlama He's as good a guitarist as there's been. And one of the dozen best British songwriters of the last century.
If you haven't already, I thoroughly recommend going back through his catalogue.
Specifically -
Liege and Lief - to be in awe his stupendously tight licks which made that album.
House Full - to hear him cut loose for once.
Morris On - to hear him help make Morris Music, yes, morris dancing music cool and relevant.

Richard is one of the best acoustic guitar exponents on the planet. This is a great performance of one of his most famous songs.
