  • first version of this song that i heard was done by Reckless Kelly but it took a full band to sound this good. amazing .

  • When RT plays at Tarrytown Music Hall one of the local residents brings his genuine '52 Vincent Black Lightning.

  • first time i heard this i listened to it of a spare casette tape that was going to get chucked away. but i held on to it, and then one day i had a listen to what was on before i recorded over a very good concert with this song on it. years later the tape has been lost but the music still remains with me. oh yeah i still have most of the songs on hard drive too!

  • bloody hell he makes it look so easy but it fucking ain't. :-)

  • Ride On!!

  • jimmy p. made watch this and i'm glad he did !

  • wow, to the youth, lol, you'll have lots of moments of awe coming up; your just starting out.

  • My great friend Ben and I co-owned a '49 Vincent HRD in 1971, not a Black Lightning but machine like no other. I sold out to Ben when I left Oxfordshire. We rode that bike all over the area. Brings a smile to my face and a tear to my eye now

  • Wonderful, wonderful song with fantastic playing, not a bad deal for red molly either in 2009 a vincent black lightening was sold at Bonhams for £221,500, the most expensive motorcycle ever sold at auction in the UK

  • heard this on radio 2 on mike harding. not my usual thing but this blew me away. This combines all the things a song should be, performed by a master.

  • I'm 16 and this is the first time I've ever heard Richard Thompson. Halfway trough the video I looked over my computer to a mirror, and started laughing as I was wearing an extremely goofy expression of pure awe on my face. ;D

  • @GravityLlama

I had the same expression on mine when I first saw it... . :-)

  • @GravityLlama

I'm 55 and the look of pure awe hasn't worn off yet!!

  • @dermotod11 Same age here, and same look!

  • @GravityLlama He's as good a guitarist as there's been. And one of the dozen best British songwriters of the last century.

If you haven't already, I thoroughly recommend going back through his catalogue.

    Specifically -

Liege and Lief - to be in awe his stupendously tight licks which made that album.

House Full - to hear him cut loose for once.

Morris On - to hear him help make Morris Music, yes, morris dancing music cool and relevant.

  • @GravityLlama

    @Lewelltam

I Want To See the Bright Lights Tonight - to hear the first and perhaps best of his proper album collaborations with his then wife, Linda.

And, finally, Mirror Blue - the great mid 90s album from which this track is taken. Perhaps his greatest album yet.

But really, give it all a go if you've the time. If you're into guitar music and want any further recommendations of albums etc (hey, I know that this one was kinda forced upon you, but, well, I couldn't resist)...

  • Gives me the chills Fuckin A

  • Richard is one of the best acoustic guitar exponents on the planet. This is a great performance of one of his most famous songs.

  • every time i hear RT play i wanna trade my guitar in for beer and munchies :-)

  • Beyond great, into the sublime. Stupendous song, stupendous lyrics, stupendous artist. Thanks for sharing this!

  • he looks like Eric Clapton's long lost more talented cousin

  • @mkultra2300 He leaves Eric in the dust. He's so underrated it makes me sad.

  • you've no idea how much I watch this video and just get awe-struck... It's just incredible.

  • Beautiful performance!!!!

  • Great video, thanks for sharing! :o)

  • This is how God would play acoustic six-string...If he/she only could!

  • absolutely tremendous, first class guitar acoustic playing

  • one of my all time favorite songs. this man is incredible.

  • I am a man of 36 and this song brings me to tears with the memory of my father, an avid classic British motorcycle collector. He left myself and my family a huge collection of motorcycles as a legacy.

Beautiful song and fantastic memories my beloved dad.

    Thank you for uploading it.

  • Kind of makes it all worthwhile Mr.CheeseFarmer. Thank you for taking the time to comment.

  • Goddam! What strumming! I could listen to him play the guitar all day.

  • This seems to be the best version of this posted on youtube.

  • Could NOT agree with you more - really great take on one of his best tunes!

  • @carpen1955 The whole 2006 concert is an absolute must-have. But re. Vincents...being German I´m expected to be a Germanbikenazi (NSU = Norton Spares Used) - give me an English Lady and I´ll happily convert from metric bolts and nuts.
