I know one thing!!!! Louisville would have whipped UK's ASS!!!!!! This was back in the day when UK would not play U of L. The only reason UK has 7 ncaa championships is because they won most of them during the civil war!!!!!
I can see why this was never used in any clip on ESPN when they talk about the greatest buzzer-beaters of all time - @ 0:40, by the time NBC switches back to this game, Arkansas has already inbounded the ball with :04 left. That aside, what a shot! What a game!
Louisville were defending Natl. Champs. They'd won 15 in a row and it took a prayer from mid-court for Ak to win. We probably would have gone to the Final Four, as we did the next two years.
@swr112261 That game should never have been as close as it was. Arkansas was ahead the entire second half until Louisville went up 73--72. The refs got caught up with the comeback, quit calling fouls on Louisville, and started calling all sorts of tickle fouls on Arkansas.
Games like this were the reason they expanded the field from 48 to 64 teams. The teams with the first round bye (in this case Louisville) were too cold on the weekend and kept getting upset. Especially DePaul.
@swr112261 Why is it a crock? Arkansas had the lead for 39 min and 55 seconds of the game. Hogs left themselves a chance to win with the last shot and they did it. Hogs were better than Louisville that year and deserved to win that game.
@Tampaslice You're right. It was a shocker of an ending. Louisville was the defending national champs in '80-'81, had started slow (2-7) and had won 15 in a row going into this game just to get into the tournament and was peaking at the right time. If Louisville had held on to win, they very well could have been the first back-to-back champs since UCLA, which ironically was were Denny Crum came from when he became Louisville's coach in 1971.
@DaCaptain924 You're in luck. As a part of the new TV deal between CBS Sports & Turner Sports, Marv Albert will be at the mike calling the NCAA tournament action.
Possibly the worst timed cut to Bryant Gumbel possible.

@HoginMemphis Agree 180% about the game. Refs let Louisville get away with murder in the second half to let them get back in and then go ahead.

@Tampaslice The entire country? I don't think Louisville would have gotten past LSU either; they sure wouldn't have beat Indiana.

Listen to Bryant Gumball interrupting and saying "Oh My" like Enberg right after that shot was made.
sctvhound 1 year ago
@sctvhound That wasn't Bryant Gumball saying "Oh My", it was Marv Albert's partner and color commentator for the game, Bucky Waters.

is that marv albert? commentating?

@TheRealLostCause: It is. This was 1981, the last year NBC had the rights to televise the tournament, so that's why you are hearing Marv's voice.
