The fact that they Meso Americans worked in metal is not in question, these men are answering a question not asked...
It is not that they had a word for metal, but did they have the metals and technology claimed in bom.
Brass - yes the they worked in copper but no Tin(ancient brass) and no Zinc (modern as in the kinderhook plates)
Iron- yes some meteoric iron is found in but no tools nor mines, one does not make swords out of meteoric iron
Steel - no Iron it's hard to make steel

5-14 and I, Nephi, did take the sword of Laban, and after the manner of it did make many swords, lest by any means the people who were now called Lamanites should come upon us and destroy us; for I knew their hatred towards me and my children and those who were called my people
I guess these scholars think a few swords would deter a hostile power. As a mater of histrory that's not the way it works
2nd nephi being fiction they can write fiction to support it.
