@frac I wish, Al! I do have a script idea floating around, though--totally unrelated to this Let's Play stuff--I just hope I'm disciplined enough to even get a draft going. :P
@mynameisnotlilly Commit yourself to writing "a paragraph". No other requirements. Just a paragraph. If it goes further, that's fine, but otherwise, just a paragraph. Somewhere along the timeline of your concept, but a relationship to other parts you've written isn't important. The _worst_ you end up with is a little book of idea gems. That's sort of the idea of something like ficly dot com.
As the comments seem to all agree, this was a fantastic series.
I particularly like the "[locked door] makes Lilly's job... heh... difficult" gag.
Also, the many New Vegas similarities were fun to notice. New Vegas being unaffected by the war, killer robots being created at a hidden, automated facility...
I've always like Wasteland (and the pseudo-chitin armor, which I remember getting to this day), and you honored the game with your narrative. This was art, and worth watching.
@EdwardHowton Thanks, Edward, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Heh... yeah, that line carried over into other Let's Plays now. :P I haven't played New Vegas yet (though I hope to do a "blind" Let's Play of it in the future), but it'll be interesting to see the influences when I fiinally get there! Thanks again.
@ajaifel I'm glad to hear it, ajaifel, thanks. I'm incorporating a similar narrative style in my more recent series for Neverwinter Nights (ShadowGuard and the official campaign), which I'd like to think is far better than this. Here, for Wasteland, I ran out of time, and ended up basically only repeating in-game messages. Not very imaginative. :P
You did wonderfully, I have to say, enjoyed every minute of it. Excellent job! I would suggest playing Fallout 2, at least...3 isn't really my thing... maybe tactics if you want. But 2 most definitely.. an improvement over 1 all round. Without straying so wildly from its roots.
It was cool to watch this lets play. Knowing I'm never going to play it, but cool to see the roots of Fallout. Have you ever seen the movie A Boy and His Dog? More cool Fallout foundations. Off to start your Fallout 1 let's play.
@bambnio77 Thanks, bambnio', I'm glad you enjoyed it. Yeah, I even own that movie. :P I put a quote from it in the "Fallout in 15 Minutes or Less" video, too. ;) Thanks!
Your voice and this narrative form of Lp worked great, and all in all probably the best Lp I've seen.
Too many memorable events to mention and like other people have mentioned you should think about putting up the audio for this somewhere ala audio book of "Wasteland; Lilly edition".
@zoh87 Wow, thanks, Zoh--but you're being too gracious! :P Audio book? Heh... it would have to include a manual with paragraphs you have to read on your own! XD Thanks.
I am curious, if you don't mind my asking. We will perhaps see Varla, Billie and Rosie again in a future Let's (Role)Play? I had been wondering for a long time how you would handle Neverwinter Nights II Storm Of Zehir's party system (if you do indeed Let's Play it), which suggest the player create a party of four characters at the start of the campaign.
Well once more, thank you for this very original and equally enjoyable Let's (Role)Play of Wasteland.
@NS13Guardian I'm glad you enjoyed it! The end reward does seem a little lackluster, even if your character were a champion of truth, justice, and the Ranger way. ;) But it's actually open-ended; you can continue to play even after "the end."
I'm also glad you enjoyed the format. It's not an honest representation of gameplay, but I really believe it would have been painful--at least with me commentating ;)--to watch 30+ hours of what would have been mostly combat. In fact, otherwise, it...
@NS13Guardian [Cont'd] ...would have been this series plus 20+ hours of nothing but (mostly insignificant) combat. :/
I'm toying with the idea of bringing Varla and the twins back in another Let's Play, done in a similar format, but likely not for any of the Faerun-esque titles. For something like SoZ, I'm not sure... if so, there might be similarities--like halfling twins--which was an idea that's been brewing since BG, but found itself here, kind of, first. ;) Thanks, Guardian!
@mynameisnotlilly I'm certainly intrigued about what other Let's (Role)Play you are considering doing in a similar format, and seeing Varla, Rosie and Billie again.
Lilly Black traveling with twin Halfing sisters. I don't know why, but that is something I had never thought of. That seems like it would be quite the spectacle.
The future (or past pending the game) certainly should prove intriguing.
@NS13Guardian Heh... the halfling twins idea was based on the simple fact that, despite being formidable fighters, they'd still be shorter than Lilly, to her liking. ;) And yeah, a pair of halfling twin sisters making quick work of unsuspecting enemies could be... comic, I guess. ;)
@mynameisnotlilly It certainly wouldn't have to comedic, although it could be. It would all be up to you. I never been much of a fan of racially short characters in most fantasy games (dwarves, halfings, and gnomes) because they are usually very one dimensional. Still, there has been the odd character of that subtype that I've been very impressed with.
From what little I've seen, dwarves look like they are real people in Dragon Age. That is, they are not just drunken brawlers with bad accents.
I quite enjoyed the episodic/report style story telling approach you employed for this Let's (Role)Play of Wasteland. I think it worked quite well for Wasteland; especially given how old and for the most part, uninteresting (although understandably) the graphics are.
It must have been quite a lot of work, particularly in editing and then narrating your footage. Thank you very much.
This was certainly a fascinating journey thank you for bring it to all of us, and with such a creative flair.
I have admit, I feel a little bad for Lilly. She wasn't betrayed fortunately, and her goals were almost always selfish, but she did save the world, and in the end, all that she received for her efforts was a small promotion. In one form or another, her luck is indeed dismal.
I've been slowly chewing my way through (and enjoying) your other series, but I have to say that this was a nice change of pace. For a game as old as this, I think the episodic format really did work out well. It felt a bit like chapters of a story, and you told that story in a way that really draws you in - with both wit and class. Thank you.
@Szeron Thanks, Szeron. I'm glad to hear that. It's actually a good change of pace for myself, as well! :) I do think some of the parts were a little too long--the settlements, in particular, like Quartz, Needles, and Las Vegas--as it was a lot to pack into a single segment. It may have been better to break them up into two parts. You're welcome, and thanks!
It is likely an example of my supreme obstinance and masochism that I would have preferred the lengthy strokes of a full-fledged, non-gloss LP of this game than hearing about the time Lilly Black got shafted by Ranger Center for saving the effin' region from robots. That being said, the narrative style and story fits you well, and it worked better, I believe, than if you had played this blind with live commentary. Wasteland finds attempts to make it amusing... well, amusing.
@GrimithR Thanks, Grim'. It would be neat to see an unedited live playthrough, and not the 16 minute speed run. Even MikeBra99's Let's Play is edited and not complete--but is certainly a more honest representation of what actual gameplay is like. Maybe, if you get tired of Daggerfall... ;)
You are probably one of the best let's players around. It was nice that you made an LP thats shorter than your usual and i like to see some other LPs like this.
@Abon666 Wow, thanks, Robin, but you're talking crazy! :P That's a good point, though. Baldur's Gate and the like are such long games, I actually enjoy these little detours myself for the same reason: I can actually finish a game before uploading the first video! ;) Thanks for the encouragement.
This entire LP was brilliant. At first, I was sad that BG2 was put on hold and couldn't wait for it to come back. After watching all of this, I'm blown away by your creativity. I've never seen anyone do a LP like this and I hope you decide to do something similar to this again! Again, amazing job!
@DMorlack Hey, Dan--thanks! Yeah, I really didn't want to delay Baldur's Gate II myself, but this project exploded out of proportion, so something had to give! :P I was toying with the idea of trying something similar in the future, and it seems recieved well enough, that I probably will--but it will likely be a while! Thanks. :)
As mentioned before, a highly enjoyable experience. So different to other LPs out there. Your choice to... "spice" up the story with character traits and the "once an episode" remark about how locked doors makes life difficult gave it a comedic edge.
One of my favourite LPs to date! Hopefully there will be more like this in the future, as you have a point - watching tedious problem solving live is not very interesting. Watching progress however, is.
@TheWaffleSpoon Wow, thanks WaffleSpoon. :) Yeah, I tried to make some elements repetitive, but I probably over did it with Varla adjusting her glasses. :P I may give it another shot, and maybe even with the same cast, but it may be a while before that happens. ;) Thanks.
Tord, I know this is episode 14 but at the end of episode 13 when you said "lilly has a plan" I seriously got chills down my spine. Great LP man, great LP. I can only hope to be like you one day ;)
@UltimaPlayer12 Chills, eh, Devon? ;) Yeah, it was a little-over dramatic perhaps--her plan was to simply be lazy. XD Thanks--but you certinaly don't want to be like me, Devon! :P
@frac Ha! Nah... thanks, though, Al. :) If anything, it taught me a few things, so if I try this format again, I'll hopefully avoid some of the same mistakes.
@wasdaeras Thanks, wasdaeras. I hear you about live commentary--I think the only post-commentary I've heard has been "live" post-commentary, and I usually don't like that myself; but... the alternative would have been 30+ hours of me agonizing through random combat encounters every two to three minutes. :P I'm glad you enjoyed it--thanks!
I liked how you did this one a lot. For sure a good choice when it comes to an older game like this one. You did a great job in conveying the feeling of the game as well as adding your own style of flair with your character descriptions. Great job!
@MomoFerret Thanks, Momo'! I have to say, I've never really played a game this old before, but I can see why this one (at least) has the reputation it does--I was impressed how much they were able to fit on that 5 1/4 floopy! ;)
@MrBORKOMAN Cool, Mr. Borkoman, I'm glad you enjoyed the paragraphs--I put them here at the end, because I realized not everyone would be interested. And thanks--I may try something similar in the future, but probably not for a *while*. ;)
You know what may be a fun little epilogue (and if you have the energy for it) Is to go back to the prophesies the snake-squeezins loving hobo uttered, and see how many you came across.
@infernocanuck Yeah, I'll be honest: I simply forgot to look back at those! :P But... when I did, they don't all have a definite meaning anyway. The only ones that might apply:
"Those who guard the past guard the secret to immortality." [Power Armor?]
"A steel storm threatens the City of Gold." [Las Vegas?]
"To the mother who speaks in riddles comes a child..." [Ellen/Laurie]
"...a machine's dream is everyone's nightmare." [Finster?]
@mynameisnotlilly I thought the "Machine's dream" was for Base Cochise, and "wake the sleeper" was for Sleeper Base. Didn't Max say something about getting that base up and running? Not that I remember that actually happening, unless he meant turning the power on and cloning and learning to fly a helicopter. "Man before wife" should be rescuing Mayor Pedro before Felicia. "Man born beneath the battlefield" ought to be Max, and "man who's lived longer than the Wasteland" ought to be Finster.
@mynameisnotlilly (continued) "A body is only a box to keep your mind in" sounds like it would be connected to entering Finster's android head. "Destroy the wombs and destroy the threat" probably refers to the creatures Finster was breeding at Darwin. I think I remember mechanical wombs that you could destroy when you were tired of grinding XPs on those beasts. Or it could have referred to the robot-making machines that you destroy at Base Cochise to possibly avoid more random robot encounters.
@mynameisnotlilly Oh, wait. Now I think I remember. "Twins born by the same hands are twins no more. Wake the sleeper to cure the sick." Definitely Sleeper Base and Base Cochise as twin bases built by the same people/organisations, and I think you can concoct some kind of antidote at Sleeper Base and use it to cure Mad Dog Fargo and Metal Maniac, who are two of the best hireable NPCs in the game. (Together with Ace, Christina, Covenant and the last NPC of all: VAX.)
@Gillsing Thanks, Gillsing. I remember looking online for some other's thoughts on what the various hobo oracles sayings meant. They're so vague, they can be interpreted in multiple ways, I think--like any good prophecy, I guess. ;)
@RealArcalian Yeah, that's what I meant: it wasn't so dramatic as it sounded in the previous part--just to have her clone take her place until she got promoted high enough. ;) Heh... thanks, Baldur's Gate II will start back up Saturday: Umar Hills!
Very well done and embellished. Your liberties gave this game a new life. I feel like I knew this crew of adventurers pretty well by the end of this glimpse of their lives. It actually does make me want to go and play the game too...good show, good game, good LPer!
I really enjoyed this as opposed to live commentary. I hope you do more games like this. Maybe you could do Fallout 3 like this, since there's quite a lot of walking around.
@JanKrievenson I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it, Jan. I may try a similar style in the future, but probably not with the planned titles like Fallout 3--though I'm certainly not against the idea of cutting out mundane gameplay in the future. Though personally, I'm one of those people who like to see *everything*, no matter how insignificant! :P
@Lahndon Thanks, Lahndon, I'm glad it did "come to life" for you. It probably goes without saying, I was a little nervous about doing such an old game. It's hard enough to not have people dismiss isometric--this isn't even *that* fancy. ;) You're too kind!
@ReclusiarchLP Thanks, David! Ha! I don't expect Fallout 2 to be as... wacky as this game, but it does carry a "mature" warning, so it requires a different kind of warning, perhaps. ;)
You don't need to be an author if you're having fun. Hopefully this concept will rub off on someone (or not?). It's pretty basic but still a forgotten art.
@TheDjayleno Thanks! I may actually try something similar in the future with another impromptu Let's Play, but probably not with one of the larger, planned titles.
@Darziak Thanks. Actually, part of the reason I felt compelled to finish it, Darziak, was because it's not really the type of game I'd play, either. ;)
@17:15 Wow thanks for that final alternate storyline Tordy 0.0. Bizarre but interesting to say the least. I really enjoyed this Wasteland walkthrough & the "extras" you added really made it come alive. It's obvious you put a lot of creative effort & energy into this. Thanks Tordy #_~
You're not an author? Are you sure? I think Lilly has enough life for a book now...

You know what may be a fun little epilogue (and if you have the energy for it) Is to go back to the prophesies the snake-squeezins loving hobo uttered, and see how many you came across.
infernocanuck 1 year ago
@infernocanuck Yeah, I'll be honest: I simply forgot to look back at those! :P But... when I did, they don't all have a definite meaning anyway. The only ones that might apply:
"Those who guard the past guard the secret to immortality." [Power Armor?]
"A steel storm threatens the City of Gold." [Las Vegas?]
"To the mother who speaks in riddles comes a child..." [Ellen/Laurie]
"...a machine's dream is everyone's nightmare." [Finster?]
"Wake the sleeper..." [triplets in Quartz?]
mynameisnotlilly 1 year ago
@mynameisnotlilly I thought the "Machine's dream" was for Base Cochise, and "wake the sleeper" was for Sleeper Base. Didn't Max say something about getting that base up and running? Not that I remember that actually happening, unless he meant turning the power on and cloning and learning to fly a helicopter. "Man before wife" should be rescuing Mayor Pedro before Felicia. "Man born beneath the battlefield" ought to be Max, and "man who's lived longer than the Wasteland" ought to be Finster.
Gillsing 7 months ago
@mynameisnotlilly (continued) "A body is only a box to keep your mind in" sounds like it would be connected to entering Finster's android head. "Destroy the wombs and destroy the threat" probably refers to the creatures Finster was breeding at Darwin. I think I remember mechanical wombs that you could destroy when you were tired of grinding XPs on those beasts. Or it could have referred to the robot-making machines that you destroy at Base Cochise to possibly avoid more random robot encounters.
Gillsing 7 months ago

They're so vague, they can be interpreted in multiple ways, I think--like any good prophecy, I guess. ;)

A Masterpiece Tord! You should be very proud!

@infernocanuck Far from a masterpiece, but I appreciate the sentiment, Dave! :)

So what was Lilly's plan anyway?
This was fun, but glad to get back to BG!
RealArcalian 1 year ago
@RealArcalian Yeah, that's what I meant: it wasn't so dramatic as it sounded in the previous part--just to have her clone take her place until she got promoted high enough. ;) Heh... thanks, Baldur's Gate II will start back up Saturday: Umar Hills!
mynameisnotlilly 1 year ago
Very well done and embellished. Your liberties gave this game a new life. I feel like I knew this crew of adventurers pretty well by the end of this glimpse of their lives. It actually does make me want to go and play the game too...good show, good game, good LPer!
Malkasphia 1 year ago
@Malkasphia Thanks, Mal'! I'm glad to hear that. They *may* actually be back sometime in the future. ;)
mynameisnotlilly 1 year ago
I really enjoyed this as opposed to live commentary. I hope you do more games like this. Maybe you could do Fallout 3 like this, since there's quite a lot of walking around.
JanKrievenson 1 year ago
@JanKrievenson I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it, Jan. I may try a similar style in the future, but probably not with the planned titles like Fallout 3--though I'm certainly not against the idea of cutting out mundane gameplay in the future. Though personally, I'm one of those people who like to see *everything*, no matter how insignificant! :P
mynameisnotlilly 1 year ago
Fantastic, really enjoyed how you, brought the whole game to life. This has to be one of the best done Lets Play's ever, imho.
Lahndon 1 year ago
@Lahndon Thanks, Lahndon, I'm glad it did "come to life" for you. It probably goes without saying, I was a little nervous about doing such an old game. It's hard enough to not have people dismiss isometric--this isn't even *that* fancy. ;) You're too kind!
mynameisnotlilly 1 year ago
As I said before, well done! I might even take a peak at Fallout 2!
ReclusiarchLP 1 year ago
@ReclusiarchLP Thanks, David! Ha! I don't expect Fallout 2 to be as... wacky as this game, but it does carry a "mature" warning, so it requires a different kind of warning, perhaps. ;)

You don't need to be an author if you're having fun. Hopefully this concept will rub off on someone (or not?). It's pretty basic but still a forgotten art.
slaxor 1 year ago
@slaxor True, Roy! I guess having fun is the most important part. ;)
mynameisnotlilly 1 year ago
You may not be an author, but you are a great story teller! I hope you do another series like this in the future, it has been quite enjoyable.
TheDjayleno 1 year ago
@TheDjayleno Thanks! I may actually try something similar in the future with another impromptu Let's Play, but probably not with one of the larger, planned titles.
mynameisnotlilly 1 year ago
Awww it's finished already. :/
Not a game I would play but you certainly made it enjoyable to watch.
Darziak 1 year ago
@Darziak Thanks. Actually, part of the reason I felt compelled to finish it, Darziak, was because it's not really the type of game I'd play, either. ;)
mynameisnotlilly 1 year ago
@17:15 Wow thanks for that final alternate storyline Tordy 0.0. Bizarre but interesting to say the least. I really enjoyed this Wasteland walkthrough & the "extras" you added really made it come alive. It's obvious you put a lot of creative effort & energy into this. Thanks Tordy #_~

@MrSentia Thanks, Jacob. What's funny, is, there's even fake paragraphs within the fake storyline! :P
