I don't know, he played it (1st of all, better than I can) as if he were playing it on the harpsichord, which is the instrument it was composed on and for, but I'm one of those "new age" people who like songs to take you on a journey that's deeper than just technique. I'm more of someone who likes to play around with tempo and dynamics, so naturally I am against something that sounds like it's being played by a player piano.
@annasocke Actually you can. As you know, they did what they could with the instruments they had, namely the harpsichord, which was what this piece was written for. There wasn't the option of playing with dynamics or tempo for this instrument. Look at Glenn Gould's interpretation of Invention No. 13 and tell me if it doesn't make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.
O yeah, and don't play like anyone else as there is only one YOU! You be you, and let dead people be themselves (reference tot he Gould poke in the comments).
You are fantastic, Jean! These were written to teach his children, so they are therefore studies. This "etude" works upon arpeggios and a few scales passing between hands. This was particularly important because the manuals (keyboards) were often split (along with a foot series). I wonder if this isn't the model for CPE's eventual Solfeggieto. You are very good! Please always take what folks say with a grain of salt. I appreciate your sharing, and allowing us to compliment you! :)
The only thing open to interpretation is the tempo. Some people like myself thinks Bach wrote it as a study piece for students therefore should be played slower. Others would do it faster like it is written in Cut Time to show more technical virtuosity and slow down just on the last sequence of notes.
funny how when you see someone play a beautiful peice of music on the PIANO and only the PIANO age becomes a big factor. One of those strange social quirks in my opinion.
well, people shouldn't argue about the age here, it obviously depends on when you start playing, well, 14 years old? maybe a gifted if he starts at 13, but it's normal if he starts at 5. Every hard song means that you must reach a right level, you pick it at the right time and how you show people you're good at it
"Honest method, by which the amateurs of the keyboard especially, however, those desirous of learning are shown a clear way... to learn to play cleanly in two parts, ... above all, however, to achieve a cantabile style in playing and at the same time acquire a strong foretaste of composition."
They are pedagogical pieces for students -- not concert masterpieces.
Actually, there are both 2- and 3-part inventions #13. This is the 2-part invention. The 3-part inventions are usually called sinfonias, but either term is fine. Usually, though, "invention" on its own refers to the 2-part inventions, as is the case here.
I'm only pointing out your needless pedantry with some of my own. Technically, in English, you can say there are, indeed, two 13th inventions by Bach. Look up "Bach Three-Part Invention 13" on You Tube if you don't believe me. Bach's titles, though, were "inventio" and "sinfonia" for these pieces.
What I said actually is that you projects very well your L.H. melody and we can hear a dialogue between hands. About rit. - in my opinion it should be done at the very end. Thank you and all the best.
k so im learning french and u said something about "attention the melody in the main something something something two and i prefer the something and the end" right? wait-right?
There is a clear understanding of the counterpoint. May I suggest that you choose your tempo from the most difficult spots as I noticed a slightly slower tempo. Keep up the good work.
for those who disagree, I have to say when i studied piano I played this at 12. It's really great that he plays (please go on! you are doing well), but i disagree to put his age on as something special - it's NORMAL
@sootkin yes, well im studying it now and i've just turned 14. it's grade 5 piece, i know people in my class that are just got an A in he IMAS examination. but this has been played very well
@sootkin I don't think that age matters at all when playing piano. Yes, it is extremely impressive when someone at the age of five or six can play a song like this but I think that as long as you are playing, and learning, and enjoying it- that is all that matters.
@sootkin but did you play it anywhere near this well, musically??? I don't think he chose this to show off his skills technically, but to show his mature musicianship.
@sootkin yes playing this piece isn't particularly diffucult, the impressive thing about this kid is the musical intelligence that he plays this with. The dynamics, phrasing, and voicing were very clear. @thepianoplayer416 the only thing open to interpretation is not tempo, Bach left many things open to interpretation (there is very few markings); the custom in the baroque era to leave space for improvisation by performers. Not only that but phrasing and dynamics are open to interpretation.
but as you see that guy is shy and doesnt celebrate his skills as so many other kids do (thinking they are the new mozarts or such becuse their tonedeaf parents told em)
i guess he didnt even upload this vid himself
he seems to be smart enough to realize that he does good but hes still lightyears away from the man who created it
and for all who are allready proud for mtching bach on the piano
then test him on the organ and you will start from almost 0

Good job, but Bach is a hard task master, isn't he?
You must look at Bach's work first from a birdseye pov.
All parts are important - and all must go at the same rate generally speaking, although there is room for variation on this.
But above all - you must first conquer the technique before anything else. If you are not perfect in your technique, the Other parts will not emerge.
And there is more than Technique, but there is nothing without it.
