They shred all test cars, power train is irrelevant. This is typical politics where you tell the truth in just the right way so that a lie is learned.
@nosirrahx Yes for prototypes. the question is: was this just a prototype. in which case why were there produced so manny hundreds of them, if this was the practice with every new car type launched it would be no wonder that the US automobile industry was in a crisis.
the only reson why they did it 2 save us becouse they only last for 10 years then you got 2 replace it with a new one that will cost 10,000 dollers it be better 2 by a gas car or some other kind of gas
@foxraceing27 Nope Nicle-Metal battery packs such as the one in the EV1 and the raw ev has a longer life spand than that. I dont know where you got that information from.Regarding the replacement price that depends what type battery pack you are using as a replacement.
EV-1 I`m sure that`s what it was......looks just like these ! Now you know!......why make Electric Cars when OIL is their only money maker..Gas Cars will be here forever, because it uses Oil.....billions going to companies that Auto Companies have money in......throw a couple Hybrids in to make Them look good.
seen a CV-1 or whatever GM made about 2 weeks ago on the street.......I thought they were all gone....or was it that electric Honda....goofy looking thing.
I really don't want to sounding like a droning conspiracy theorists, but I think now it's obvious that they don't want these cars on the road is because they wanted to bring out a shitty, overpriced EV that doesn't last nearly as long, thus the volt was born. why the hell did you think C4C happened? cars were lasting way too long and driving down sales. Damn GM,Ford and Chrysler for making quality products in the 80's and 90's, eh? lol!
the EV1 was a GM test bed. all the people who signed the lease agreed to a 2 year trial of the car. after that time GM could not guarantee the stability the batteries. the batteries were so toxic they could not be recycled, but had to be dismantled by technicians in a lab. the technology was an experiment and like all experiments the data needed to be collected. Toyota, Honda and Ford all did the same. this has been a practice since the beginning of automobile technology. stop bitching!!!
@ahubbard117 Right, because i gave a concise and detailed explanation, yet according to your expert analysis, i know nothing. Obviously i do know something, as you commented on my contribution. you are obviously mistaken sir/madam.
@REBELsst - Actually I am not mistaken. I know the EV1 very well. The whole battery thing, was a crock of crap rigged up by GM as an excuse not to market the EV1. Look at the advertising, look at the lists upon lists of people who wanted one. The demand was there. Yes, Toyota, Ford and Honda had similar vehicles but they were not as cabalistic about killing their own product. There was no reason to pull the EV1s off the road. Plain and simple. They were fantastically engineered machines.
@ahubbard117 they were taken off the road for the simple reason that they were used up! take ur laptop, when the battery dies and wont hold a charge u need a new battery, but at roughly 1/3 the cost most people get a new laptop. that was the same mentality with the EV1 as well as the first Preis and honda from the 90's.
@REBELsst - They were not used up. Period. The government and GM and oil companies wished to keep a valuable piece of technology off the road because they would have been screwed. And no, as an IT person, most people just buy a new battery. The battery technology is and has always been there. People just wish not to acknowledge it. You need to do some more reading.
@ahubbard117 Im in IT as well and those ppl that get a new battery could get a new laptop that outperforms their 4 y/o model for under $400. there was an article in Autoweek about these cars and why they were leased. had nothing to do with the government or big oil. it had to do with it being a test market to see if the technology worked. GM stated they were released as a "real-world engineering evaluation" they were offered "through limited lease-only agreements" that these ppl signed.
@ahubbard117 the battery tech has NOT been "there" as u said. only in the last 5 years has it worked well enough for practical automotive applications. the EV1 took WAY too long to charge and the batteries only lasted a few years (about the term of the lease). in 1996 when the EV1 was released the batteries and car was an experiment as i said.
and our STUPID government bailed GM out!........and when they pulled this Crap? and So.Cal....is so polluted from traffic, that was the best thing they had!.......GM got something else up their ASS?.....like the Volt......over priced piece of SHIT.......who really is running the show?BIG OIL and the BANKS!
@jeepers2655 GM did this to test the technology for future cars like the new Volt. U wanna be mad at someone? be mad at the U.S. Government and Obama for Cash for Clunkers. 70% of those cars turned in were in better shape than cars still on the road. they destroyed the entire car, didnt recycle them or part them out, just crushed them. perhaps selling them as Government certified cars to low income families or individuals might have been a better plan... Thanks Obama! i voted for the other guy.
@jeepers2655 - The Volt is a joke. Why the US had to bail GM out I will never know. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. They had a great thing going and they ruined it for themselves. We (the US) should have let them fall flat on their face.
I love beagley's little '90%' remark...try it anywhere you have hills and longer drives...like most folks in Cal. Unlike Hokeywierd folks, most folks actually have to commute FARTHER than 50 miles a day, and DON'T have access to a 'recharge station.'
The fuel cell system, at least, can work with existing technologies and doesn't require mandates to accomplish. So why do so many give THIS technology a poo-poo, and try to go for these over-glorified golf carts?

Oh yeah...GM wanted all these folks to have to buy new batteries within two years and complain about old batteries polluting landfills.
Yeah...it was all about denying the public what they wanted. What a delusional fairy tale.
