well, they used to think that leeches sucked out the poisonous blood from sickness. they currently use them in some hospitals to drain out blood from internal bleeding.

Leeches suck the blood from body parts that has been damaged, either by cold temperature or loss of blood circulation. The leech sucks out damaged blood cells, leaving room for new fresh blood to stream into the void.
